The purpose of the conference is to acquaint policymakers with the best recent research and to familiarize researchers with the knowledge needs of policymakers and industry. The TPRC program is developed primarily from submitted papers. The Program Committee will also be considering tutorials, special panels, and guest speakers. Suggestions for the latter can be emailed directly to the Program Committee. TPRC is now soliciting abstracts of papers for presentation at its 2003 conference. Proposals should be based on current theoretical and/or empirical research relevant to communication and information policy, and may be from any disciplinary perspective. TPRC welcomes national, international, comparative, and multi- or inter- disciplinary studies. Abstracts should contain a clear statement of the central ideas and outcomes of the research, in addition to a description of the topic being addressed. All abstracts must be submitted via the submission form at www.tprc.org/submit/ and should include contact information, a no-larger-than 500 word abstract, and a brief CV. Submissions are due by March 31, 2003. No submission will be accepted after this date. Acceptance notices will be emailed in early May. Primary authors may have only one paper accepted. Contributors may act as secondary authors of multiple papers, including professors supporting the work of students. Primary authors are expected to present the paper. Although primary authors will only have one paper accepted, they may submit multiple abstracts for consideration. The availability of funding to reimburse presenters expenses is expected to be limited. Selected papers will be due to TPRC in late August. TPRC will provide online access to all conference papers. University of Surrey School of Human Sciences Department of Sociology Lectureship in Sociology (Ref: 3711) Salary: Lecturer Scale A/B, up to £33,679 pa Applications are invited for a Lecturer in Sociology with expertise in one or more of the following areas: the sociology of culture, media, new media or communications technologies. The post will commence on 1 September 2003. The post-holder will join a lively, research active department which achieved a 5* in the 2001 RAE, and currently has over £3million worth of research grants and contracts. The post holder will be expected to make a significant contribution both to the departments research and to the BSc in Sociology, Culture and New Media. He or she will be expected to supervise undergraduate and Masters dissertations, and doctoral students. Depending on the particular areas of interest and expertise of the successful candidate, there would be opportunities to teach on other parts of the undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum in the Sociology Department. Candidates should have a strong research profile and a good publication record. It is expected that he or she will have research interests that relate to one or more of the Sociology Departments substantive research groupings: New Media and Communication Technologies; Culture, Identity and Ethnicity; Crime and Criminal Justice; Health, Social Divisions and the Life Course; and Sociology of the Environment. Lovely thread! Some of the responses made me think though. Isn't it perhaps a slippery explanatory strategy for internet research to revamp old concepts by attaching the prefixes cyber-, virtual, digital, or e- to them? I know these were not dominating the suggestions, but they kept popping up, mixing with concepts like interactivity. And I could be totally wrong, so feel free to vivisect me. Ildiko Kaposi

A prize book, and a book prize

Jane Fountain has been honored with an Outstanding Academic Book award for 2002 by Choice, whose highly prestigious award recognizes "the best of the best in published scholarship." Her pathbreaking study of the global transformation of governance, Building the Virtual State: Information Technology and Institutional Change, was published by the Brookings Institution Press in August 2001. Fountain is Associate Professor of Public Policy; co-chair of the Information, Technology, and Governance Faculty Group; and Director of the National Center for Digital Government at the Kennedy School. Every year in the January issue, Choice magazine publishes a highly selective list of Outstanding Academic Titles. This prestigious list reflects the best in scholarly titles reviewed by Choice. In making the award, the editors apply several criteria including excellence in presentation and scholarship, significance of the contribution to a field, and distinction as an important?often the first?treatment of a subject.

The aim of this conference is to explore the extent and diversity of CCTV deployment in different countries and institutional settings and to consider the social, political and legal issues that arise from the expansion of surveillance. Although the conference will have a particular European focus we would especially welcome contributions from researchers in North and South America, Australia, Africa and Asia. Transforming e-Knowledge: A Revolution in the Sharing of Knowledge by Donald M. Norris (US), Jon Mason (AU), and Paul Lefrer (UK) http://www.transformingeknowledge.info <- full text on line here This is a beautiful, 2-color, 164-page book which is designed in such a way as to use a lot of graphics and color to lighten and guide the reader through some fairly dense information. In the Foreword, Diana Laurillard of the Open University says of the book: "We cannot predict the future, but we do sense that we have the power to shape it. So we need to take time to reflect: on what those possible futures are, which are the more desirable, and what it takes to realise them. The authors of this book set out to help us with that process. On every page you will find them striving to express the ways in which e-systems can be exploited, the benefits they could yield, and what we all, individuals and organisations together, must now do." With the collaboration of groups like Australia.edu, EDUCAUSE, the NLII, and more, over the next month or two, approximately 10,000 copies of the book will arrive in the hands of readers in a variety of channels, mostly in North America, but also in Europe and Australasia. So we think it will be much read and discussed. Special Issue of JCMC online

Colleagues: I'd like to call your attention to a special issue of the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, on the topic of "Technologies of Despair and Hope: Liberatory Potentials and Practices of CMC in the Middle East", co-edited and introduced with my colleague Fay Sudweeks: <http://www.ascusc.org/jcmc/vol8/issue2/>. To cite the opening page: The simplistic view of a monolithic Islamic world pitted against an equally monolithic West disappears quickly into much more complex local histories and politics that provide as many counter-examples to, as examples of, these broad categories. Articles in this special issue provide us with a careful, detailed, and nuanced look at the diffusion and impacts of CMC technologies in the Middle East, with reports on Afghanistan, Israel, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates. Somewhat more carefully, two of the articles will be of value for folks interested in gender and religion in the Islamic context, as these are affected - from a Western perspective - in liberatory ways (United Arab Emirates and Afghanistan); the third examines how CMC technologies in Israel largely replicate the inequalities of power, rather than help "liberate" or "democratize," as proponents of these technologies often promise.
