As I wrestle with how to approach a research project involving CMC, I'm curious as to what types of theoretical approaches researchers on this list use when studying CMC. As most here know, a much more effective use of humor and satire directed at white people, but in an anti-racist context is: http://www.blackpeopleloveus.com This is an *excellent* example of using cyberspace and new media not for the purpose of perpetuating real-life racism, as tends to be done in almost *every* virtual sphere, but as a way of interrupting the normal operation of the Matrix. This site is particularly important, most specifically because of it's longevity, which is unique to the medium, as similar efforts in print, TV, or radio have tended to be more ephemeral. This sets it apart from say, a comedy sketch on late night TV, which people laugh about but then forget, or remember but then can't fully convey the impact to another person. With the web, all you need do is pass along the URL to those who are in need of the Red Pill. For those of you who are new media professors, this should be exhibit number one with your students. Computer-mediated communication has long extended the simple use of only the computer. Nowadays, most people associate CMC with technologies such as email, chat, instant messaging, and even short message sending via cell phones. However, measurement instruments to assess our competency to communicate effectively through these mediated modes are rare. I'm asking for your help in testing a medium choice / computer-mediated communication competency instrument. [In the interest of ensuring all who may be interested take note of the extension of the deadline for submission of AoIR 4.0 conference proposals to March 10, I am re-sending this message. -Sj] ------------- At 8:51 AM -0600 2/25/03, Steve Jones wrote: There have been some questions concerning limits to conference submissions. However, I do encourage panel organizers to keep as close as possible to the limits expressed in the call for papers: The panel organizer should submit an approximately 500 word statement describing the session topic, include abstracts of up to 250 words for each paper or presentation (e.g., 1000 words for four papers). NOTE: Given this need for clarification, the conference submission deadline is extended until MARCH 10, 2003. Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs) increasingly serve as creative realms for such online communication and interaction. This panel examines several of the key issues related to MMORPGs, with possible topics to include access, the digital divide, participation in and the creation of digital narratives, the formation of communities, and the economics within and surrounding the individual games. Proposals for papers should be in the form an approximately 250-500 word abstract.

This is having far-reaching consequences on information and communication processes in the sciences and humanities. The NIWI research group Networked Research and Digital Information (Nerdi) has recently begun a programme of research to chart these changes. NIWI is an Institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) with a focus on research and data-structure within the field of scientific communication and information. Within the programme, a new project of one year has been formulated to study the way researchers make use of the World Wide Web. To pursue this postdoc project of one year, Nerdi is seeking 1 researcher (M/F) Vacancy number PZ 024 (40 hours full-time *1) The successful applicant will be part of Nerdi's team that presently consists of eight people. The project falls under the themes of collaboration and research methods, as laid out in our research programme (http://www.niwi.knaw.nl/nerdi) Present team members are concentrating on: * ethnographic research on the role of trust in data-sharing * network analysis * quantitative research on Web based scientific information * modelling and simulating of innovation processes * quality control in science and scholarship * access to scientific information * metaphors in scientific communication The Project The project will focus on an analysis of the role of the Web in scientific research. It is part of a larger international collaboration on science and the Web. The project has methodological as well as substantial dimensions. Applicants should hold a PhD (or be awarded their PhD shortly) and be available to start work in the short term. They should have research experience in one (or more) of the dimensions of the project (study of knowledge infrastructures , qualitative analysis of content of websites, sociology of science and technology, science studies). Job responsibilities The researcher's main responsibility will be to pursue the project. She will also be expected to take part in the intellectual life and general research activities of Nerdi. Education and experience 1. Demonstrable relevant research experience, attested by a PhD degree and publications in peer reviewed journals. 2. An excellent knowledge of English, both oral and written. 3. Experience in qualitative, and affinity with quantitative methods of research. 4. Candidates should be able to work in a project-oriented manner, with a measure of autonomy.
