As a member of many academic and hobby mailing lists I'm regularly struck by requests to the list for information that could have been uncovered by a web search. Today for example there was an 'urgent' request on a list for info on Terrence Malick's use of Walt Whitman, from a Cultural Studies professor. A web search on the two names brought up a number of good articles. Anyone know whether this is widespread, or have any explanation why Internet users would email others for information rather than search the web? Hello I can recommend Qualrus www.ideaworks.com. The software is similar to the N6 software, buthas additionally a concept mapping tool and based on AI code suggestions built in. For furhter information I would need more information in what you are trying to do and what you expect the software to assist you in. Call for Papers Into the Blogosphere: Rhetoric, Community, and Culture of Weblogs ABSTRACTS DUE JUNE 30, 2003 Ed. by the University of Minnesota Blog Collective Smiljana Antonijevic, Laura Gurak, Laurie Johnson, Jim Oliver, Clancy Ratliff, Jessica Reyman, Sathya Yesuraja The editors invite submissions for a new online edited collection exploring discursive, visual, and other communicative features of weblogs. We are interested in submissions that analyze and critique situated cases and examples drawn from weblogs and the weblog community. Although we are open to a wide range of scholarly approaches, our primary interest is in essays that comment upon specific features of the weblog and that treat the weblog as always a part of a larger community network. Categories around which essays may cohere include: * Social and Psychological Perspectives * Visual Features, including Interface Design and Navigation * Rhetorical and Linguistic Features of Weblog Discourse * Pedagogical Implications * Intellectual Property * Race, Class, and Gender * Intercultural Communication Because blogs, like the Internet, have a global reach, we encourage an international scope as well. Along with this being the first scholarly collection of its type focused on weblog as rhetorical artifact, we are also taking an innovative approach to publishing and intellectual property. Weblogs represent the power of regular people to use the Internet for publishing. The ethos of blogging is collaborative and values the sharing of ideas; bloggers are not dependent on publishers to get their words out. In the same manner, the editors of this collection will publish the collection online. We will use a peer-review process to ensure scholarly quality. But like a weblog, the collection will be available to all, although authors will retain their own copyrights. We intend to obtain a version of a Creative Commons license. The members of the collective welcome the opportunity to discuss the scope of the collection or directions for essays with prospective authors. Content Analysis software

Dear fellow researchers, May 13, 2003 I am working with a graduate student this summer on a project involving children's web sites (sites whose prime intended audience = children). She is interested in doing some content analysis of such sites. My question is: what software do you recommend for such a project? I think she is interested primarily in text, but might also look at photos/graphics, etc. On a more general level, I tend to work with Macs. Are there Mac content analysis programs for other projects (notably news stories and newscast script) and how do these compare to Windows-based programs--or even old ASCII/DOS driven programs like VBPro? --Mark Harmon Mark D. Policy Analyst, Center for Democracy and Technology The Center for Democracy and Technology is seeking a policy analyst to support its work on Internet civil liberties and policy issues. The job offers an exciting opportunity to help shape emerging policy issues surrounding the Internet and other new digital media. CDT is a non-profit public interest group, based in Washington DC, dedicated to promoting civil liberties and human rights online. CDT is one of the world's premier Internet advocacy organizations, with a global reputation and well-respected staff. CDT works at the cutting edge of online policy issues concerning privacy and security, free expression, government surveillance and national security, digital copyright, and international policy issues. NOTICE OF PART TIME LAW FACULTY POSITION TECHNOLOGY LAW AND PUBLIC POLICY CLINIC The University Of Washington School Of Law invites applications for the appointment of a part-time Lecturer or Assistant Professor without tenure (WOT). Faculty rank will be dependent on qualifications of candidate and funding availability and source. This faculty member will serve as director of a newly created public interest Technology Law and Public Policy Clinic. The clinic, an outgrowth of the Shidler Center for Law, Commerce and Technology, is being funded for an initial period of two years. The Law School seeks applicants who possess superior academic credentials, a record of practice and/or legislative and policymaking experience in areas relating to technology law and public policy. Relevant areas of expertise include: Internet/information technology, intellectual property and telecommunications. Candidates must have been admitted to practice law for a minimum of three years. Previous teaching experience preferred. The position involves: (1) directing a law school clinic in which students represent underrepresented stakeholders in public policy debates concerning law and technology. Possible clients will include government agencies and entities, nonprofit organizations, consumer organizations and indigent persons. Projects will include legislative drafting and commentary, amicus and appellate advocacy projects; (2) teaching clinic students the substantive law, procedures, lawyering skills and ethical considerations necessary to represent the clinic's clients; (3) supervising the students' provision of legal services to clinic clients; (4) teaching a parallel 2-credit substantive course on technology law and public policy during the autumn quarter for students enrolled in the clinic, other interested JD and LLM students and graduate students from other departments; and (5) grant writing and related fund raising activities. Thanks to Serge, Steve and Ed for your tips on the genealogy of the term surfing - here is a short summary: As Serge and Steve suggested Jean Armour Polly (a.k.a. Net Mom) is credited with the first published use (not the first use!). More can be found at: http://www.netmom.com/about/surfing10.shtml - Polly gives a few examples predating her own use of the term: unpublished written use of the term internet surfing or net-surfing in the early 90's and some examples of people who have talked about 'information surfing' in the late 80's. Some people have voiced the argument that surfing is really a derivative of 'cerfing' (referring to Vint Cerf, who is regarded as one of the 'fathers of the Internet' - as I recall it he played a central role in the development of the Internet Protocol (IP)). Others claim that the term is based on the notion of 'channel surfing' as used about switching channels on television. To me, the first sounds like a typical internet myth but of course they are not mutually exclusive.
