Post Identity, a national, fully-refereed journal of the humanities, publishes scholarship that problematizes the narratives underlying individual, social, and cultural identity formations; that investigates the relationship between identity formations and texts; and that argues how such formations can be challenged. Increasingly we, our contributors, and our readers are finding that the most powerful of these cultural formations and their most provocative critical challenges are combining text, images, and sound: we use to watch films; we now consume DVD assemblages of multiple cuts, interviews, and games. We use to only print our work; we are now publishing web sites that embed that work in multimedia settings. In response to these cultural and disciplinary changes, Post Identity has partnered with the University of Michigans Scholarly Publishing Office to transform itself into an audio-, graphic-, and video-enhanced web-based journal that can make available the new forms and subjects of contemporary critiques of identity, as well as more traditional text-based scholarship. The theme for our Winter 2003 special issue is Identifying New Media. We are looking for submissions that theorize how new media forms (DVDs; e-books; Internet blogs, digital archives, interactive gaming; etc.) are changing cultural and academic understandings of identity and authorship, and/or how new media might provide models for new forms of scholarship. We especially are interested in experimental work that performs its theory, such as essays or projects that offer alternative models to the standard academic essay. We are interested in the relationship between the form and content of academic discourse, and the ways in which this discourse might evolve in light of the new media scene. We invite the immediate submission of 300-word abstracts of essays and other academic projects on this theme. We encourage submissions from a variety of theoretical perspectives and from all disciplines for which the critique of identity is of vital and central concern. Final essays/projects should fall within the range of 3,000 to 10,000 words and will be due September 30, 2003. Please submit abstracts to Professor Rosemary Weatherston at weatherr(a)udmercy.edu. Social movements/Internet We are glad to see our work cited, more recently Castells and Sklair have used some of our perspective. I am not familiar with the citations shown in the post, but with Internet, stuff gets posted everywhere/anywhere. For folks who want to look it up/have a print reference, the paper we gave at AoIR 1.0, much revised appears as Langman, Lauren, Douglas Morris and Jackie Zalewski, "Cyberactivism and Alternative Globalization Movements", in Wilma A,. Dunaway, ed. Emerging Issues in the 21st Century World-System. pp. 218 -35. Westport: Conn, Greenwood Press, 2002. We have another paper in press that notes the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, it is concerned with virtual public spheres, will appear (04) in Social Theory. We did an early, power point version at our Midwest Soc and Steve Jones was the commentator. (Will send ppt if asked) For folks in/near Atlanta, Dana Fisher will have a session at ASA, Aug, on soc movements and will do our latest version. Further, I have organized a session for AoIR 4.0 Toronto, with Valerie Scatamburlo, Victor Pikard and Steve Walker on the topic of sm on the net. Do join us. Personal comment: while not well covered in mass media, the internet is empowering people accross the globe and slowly, surely, there is ever more resistance, confrontation against domination-now fascilitated by the net. The extensive use of the net in organizing Porto Alegre and organizing NGOs is amazing, and while demonstrations get press, you know the "crazy criminals" that challenge global power and capitalism, the extent of grass roots organization is where the action is at. For example, as we network, there are major contests between the masses of people in Iran and the theolocratic gerontocracy-and one place this takes place is cyberspace. A major issue besides the political is the moral, pornography abounds. But in this case, much like the old pre net, samistad (sp?) presses in the USSR, pornography, as an exemplar of the grotesque of carnival, as Bakhtin has shown, is a protest, resistance, albiet symbolic, against established authority. Now I am not saying that watching porn> freedom and democracy, it may actually be the other way around, but it does become a point along a policed border on the cultural terrain, where established power is challenged. Internet topologies

I'm working with a user experience strategy team on developing a conceptual mapping or topology for a very large internet domain that has millions of leaf-level pages. We will need to differentiate between public and private areas; between generic and personalized areas; and between straight information delivery and robust web application areas. We may also benefit from a scheme for task- or goal-oriented topologies and audience-focused topologies.
