Dear Colleague We would like to bring to your attention details of the first webcast debate to be held in the Oxford Union Debating Chamber, taking place on Monday 23rd June 5-7pm. The debate, hosted by the OII with kind support from EDS and Oracle will address the motion 'This House has confidence in voting via the Internet'. Chaired by Stephen Coleman, Cisco Visiting Professor of e-Democracy, the debate will see Jim Adler, CEO and Prseident of Votehere speaking for the motion, and Jason Kitcat, Founder and Co-ordinator of the Free e-Democracy Project opposing the motion. Richard Allen MP will join Stephen Coleman on the panel. Someone recently posted re: good journals to publish Net-focused research. Please consider submitting to NMEDIAC, The Journal of New Media and Culture (at nmediac.net) The goal of the journal is to publish interdisciplinary work and work that represents approahing issues of new media and culture from specific fields. Recently we have had a lot of humanities oriented work, and we really need more articles that integrated social science approaches as well. Submissions from Air-heads are encourage and definitely appropriate to the journal's scope and mission! CALL FOR PAPERS The Information Society (TIS) special issue on SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF PUBLIC POLICY IN THE INFORMATION AGE Edited by Milton Mueller (Syracuse University) and Becky Lentz (Ford Foundation) If the 1990s was the decade of market liberalization in media and telecommunication industries, what will the next decade be? What will define the agenda for communication and information policy in the next decade? Current policy discourse is focused on relatively narrow regulatory or legal issues, such as broadband regulation, the proper scope of intellectual property rights, interconnection and competition in telecommunications, and media concentration. While recognizing the importance of issue-specific policy research, this special issue would attempt to shift some attention to the underlying social determinants of public policy. The objective is to encourage the development of revised conceptions of the public interest appropriate to a transformed industrial and political environment. Interdisciplinary papers that bring together insights from political science, sociology, economics, and cultural studies are especially welcome. Ideally, papers would shed light on current developments and place them in perspective that has relevance for the future. As more specific examples of the type of papers/research we seek: * Analyses of long-term change in media and telecommunications institutions that draw upon any relevant literature of institutional change (e.g., the New Institutional Economics, the Old Institutional Economics, social movement theory, property rights economics, organizational repertoires and innovation). * Papers exploring changes in the way citizens, consumers, business groups or other constituencies are organizing to influence communication and information policy, including new analyses of how so-called global civil society or transnational advocacy networks are involved in communication and information issues. * Papers that assess the impact of globalization on communication and information policies, and explore the relationship between national policies, constituencies, and institutions on the one hand and international organizations and constituencies on the other. * How conceptions of the public interest in communication and information policy have changed in response to new technologies, new industry conditions and political and social developments. Are new theories of the public interest in communications and information policy being formed? * Explorations of the role of ideas and scholarly research in shaping, fomenting or resisting changes in policy. How are normative principles responding to the changing landscape? Manuscripts prepared according to the TIS guidelines should be submitted by October 1, 2003. Dear list I have written an article on research on online communities, partly based on theoretical considerations, partly based on the framework I have developed in my personal research on political debates online. It was meant to be a part of a book but for various reasons the book project did not come true. Now I am searching for a suitable journal and are asking you for suggestions. I believe I have provided a strong methodological contribution to the field of studies of online communities. Although my research framework was fitted to analyze political debates it will be easily usable for studies of all sorts of online communities. In the article I argue that the study of online communities ought to include all the different aspects of the phenomenon and therefore a broad range of methods is necessary. I outline three aspects of online communities which have to be studied in order to get a comprehensive picture of community life: communication, participants and relations. I address the related methods available for each aspect, content analysis, online surveys and quantitative online tools. I focus mostly on the content analysis of communication as I emphasize communication as the most important aspect of community life. Finally, I give an example of such s study taken from my own research on political public spheres online. Keywords: Online communities, content analysis, web surveys, Internet studies, methodology.
