Critical Discourse Studies is an interdisciplinary journal for the social sciences. Its primary aim is to publish critical research that advances our understanding of how discourse figures in social processes, social structures, and social change. The journal has been established in response to the proliferation of critical discourse studies across the social sciences and humanities. We will consider for publication papers that meet the needs of scholars in diverse disciplines and areas of study which develop critical perspectives on the relationship between discourse and social dynamics. Relevant areas and disciplines include, but are not limited to: anthropology communication cultural studies education ethnic studies gender studies geography history legal studies linguistics literary studies management studies media studies migration studies philosophy political economy political science psychology sociology technology studies urban studies The ediitors also welcome papers which connect critical academic research with practical concerns and agendas, including those of activist and grassroots political movements. The scope of critical discourse studies is not limited to linguistic studies, or articles that are primarily empirical or analytical. Critical examination of non-linguistic phenomena that take a significant discourse orientation, as well as theoretical and methodological papers that advance critical understandings of discursive phenomena, are welcomed. Recognising the diversity, depth, and history of scholarship in the growth of critical discourse studies, no particular theoretical, disciplinary, or methodological "schools" or paradigms will be privileged over others in the selection of papers for publication. The primary criteria for publication are originality, scholarly rigor, coherence of argument, relevance and timeliness of research. Critical Discourse Studies encourages contributions from both new and established scholars. The journal recognises that the new and rapidly changing social relations of the current age call for new approaches and new understandings that bridge disciplinary and cultural boundaries. Therefore the editors strongly encourage the submission of papers that help us achieve these aims. Critical Discourse Studies aims to be accessible. It aims for papers that are written clearly, explain key terms and concepts in an accessible way for readers at many levels, and recognise the needs and interests of its diverse community of readers. Call for Papers Internet Research 5.0: Ubiquity? International and Interdisciplinary Conference of the Association of Internet Researchers at the University of Sussex, England, 19-22nd September 2004 Submission site opens: December 15th 2003 Deadline for submissions: February 2nd 2004 Conference Websites: http://aoir.org/2004 or http://www.sussex.ac.uk/cce/aoir The internet seems to be at once everywhere and invisible but simultaneously it structures only a fraction of the communications of the total global community. It can facilitate greater interaction, understanding and political activism; being used at the same time to exclude, destroy and exploit. The much cited ubiquity of the internet needs to be examined in both the contexts in which it is accepted and those in which it is contested. The theme of 'ubiquity?' addresses the following questions: Is the internet everywhere? How and where does the internet appear and act in technical, social, political, or cultural contexts? What does it mean to have access and who does and doesn't have it? How does the presence of the internet affect individuals, communities, families, governments, societies and nation-states? What are the implications of 'internet everywhere'? Submissions addressing these and other questions regarding the internet are welcome. Internet Research 5.0 will feature a variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives on the Internet. Examining and challenging the visibility and prevalence of the Internet and Internet discourses, the conference will bring together a wide range of researchers, practitioners and scholars for the exchange of formal and informal ideas. As with previous AoIR conferences, the aim is to promote a deep, coherent and situated understanding of the Internet and connected networks. IR 5.0 will take place at the University of Sussex, in the UK, close to the historic and lively seaside City of Brighton and Hove and on the edge of the spectacular Sussex South Downs. The conference is hosted by the Centre for Continuing Education at the University of Sussex in association with local partners. Submission of Proposals The Association of Internet Researchers invites paper, presentation and panel proposals on topics that address technical, social, cultural, political, pedagogical, economic, and aesthetic aspects of the internet. We welcome interdisciplinary submissions as well as submissions from within specific disciplines. We especially seek panel proposals that establish connections across disciplines, institutions, and/or continents. We also encourage creative presentations that will make use of internet technologies and artistic techniques. * Proposals for individual papers should be in the form of 500-1,000 word abstracts. * Creative presentations and demonstration projects should consist of a 500-1,000 word abstract, this should include links to illustrative materials. * Panels will generally include three to four papers or presentations. The panel organiser should submit an approximately 500 word statement describing the session topic, include abstracts of up to 500 words for each paper or presentation, and indicate that each author is willing to participate in the session. Each submission must also be accompanied by a 100-word abstract that will go into the conference proceedings if the submission is accepted. All papers, presentations and panels will be peer reviewed. If you are interested in reviewing submissions for this conference, please contact program chair Sheizaf Rafaeli at the address below. Abstracts should indicate the disciplinary or conceptual approach, theoretical orientation, methodology of the research or ideas, and the key results or hoped-for results of the research. Reference should also be made to the broader significance of the work and its relationship to existing bodies of work. Clarity of the themes, content, aims and outcomes, is of greater importance than word length. Full-length papers will be required after the conference and a selection of the highest quality papers will be published in an Annual Review (subject to authors' permission). Proposals can be for three types of contribution to the conference: papers; creative presentations; and/or panels. Each person is invited to submit a proposal for no more than 1 paper or 1 presentation. In addition you may also submit or be part of no more than a single panel. The aim is to include as wide a range of speakers as possible and to thus avoid speakers using time in more than one session. Average time allotted for a paper or creative presentation will be 15 minutes. Average time allotted for a panel will be 1 hour and 15 minutes, including discussion time. There will be additional opportunities to contribute to the conference by chairing sessions, taking part in roundtables and workshops and through audience participation. Pre-Conference Workshops Prior to the conference, there will be a limited number of pre-conference workshops, which will provide participants with in-depth, hands-on and/or creative opportunities. We invite proposals for these pre-conference workshops; local presenters are encouraged to propose workshops that will invite visiting researchers into their labs or studios or locales. Proposals should be no longer than 1000 words, and should clearly outline the purpose, methodology, structure, costs, equipment and minimal attendance required, as well as explaining its relevance to the conference as a whole. Proposals will be accepted if they demonstrate that the workshop will add significantly to the overall program in terms of thematic depth, hands on experience, or local opportunities for scholarly or artistic connections. Hello, I am putting out a query to tech oriented educators asking for opinions on how to implement my pet web/cable TV show project, called Sports Smarts. At present I am developing content for an online sports interaction website called Sports Smarts. I am writing scripts for "characters" that users can choose and follow through a streaming video story about Little League Elbow. I will be shooting video to allow for multiple storylines, with branches and outcomes based on each child's chosen character (risk-taker, gamer, winner, clutch, etc.) The focus is sports safety and thinking skills. The website will be used as an "after the TV show" opportunity for kids to interact online. The show will be broadcast in suburbs around Chicago. Anyway, my question is this: I am seeking a prepackaged solution (ideally free, but perhaps off-the-shelf???) that can handle the following wish list of functionality: 1. The capacity to allow for branching/different outcomes based on user inputs. 2. Database functionality to store information 3. Sign-on/register function 4. Ability to take user surveys/give kids "quizzes" 4. Chat/IM 5. Chat monitoring capacity 6. AD serving 7. Streaming video 8. Website traffic monitoring 9. Ability to update content easily I realize that not all of these features are necessarily part of the same one-size-fits-all solution, but that is what I would like to explore as a first option. I have no real budget, but perhaps I can line up a sponsor or two if I figure out what is actually possible on a shoe string budget. 1. Do you know of any packages out there that might fit the bill? 2. Is a content management tool like Blackboard appropriate? 3. Are these off the shelf-programs flexible enough to take on a cool, kid-friendly look? In other words, I want this to this to "look" right so that kids enjoy visiting and interacting with their friends. Thanks for any and all suggestions or ideas. Theory and Practice of Community Informatics in the CIS (English-Russian Textbook) Call for Abstracts and Chapters This edition will be the second part of the textbook "Community Informatics. Community Networking: Approaches. Prospects. Tools". The first part of the book was published in 2003 in Russian and English as a part of the Community Informatics Open Source Archive (http://ci-text.researcher.at) and was focused on the experiences of using information and communication technologies (ICTs) for locally based community and civic development (broadly defined) in a global, but particularly developed country context. The second part will in large part present a wide range of theoretical and practical experience, which has been accumulated in CIS countries in the area of Community Informatics. Community Informatics is a rapidly growing interdisciplinary approach which includes concerns for community Internet access, community information, online civic participation and community service delivery, community economic development, training and learning networks, and telework among other areas of interest. We are looking for papers focusing on the experience in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States on the issue areas listed below among others: 1. ICTs and community and social development 2. e-government, e-governance and e-democracy 3. e-enabled local economic development 4. e-education and e-learning 5. using ICTs in civic activities 6. local information systems 7. e-enabled local media and content production 8. locally based e-enabled resource management 9. locally based e-enabled environmentalism and environmental management 10. government policy and local ICT initiatives We welcome accounts of both theoretical and applied research, as well as research conducted at micro, meso and macro levels of analysis. In addition to research papers, we welcome submissions on current issues, public policies and practical problems in the field. We would particularly like to invite papers presenting case studies of successful localized ICT developments, citizen's media and community communication issues. In addition, the volume will include a limited number of high quality theoretical articles which will provide an overall vision and overview on the current status, problems and perspectives of Community Informatics as the discipline is developing globally. Thus, the overall objective of the book is to provide an introduction to advanced research on the objectives, practices and dynamics of Community Informatics as it is being expressed across all types of social institutions and media. Authors should initially submit short or extended abstracts of no more than 1500 words or completed papers for an initial review by March 1, 2004. Final papers will be due no later than April 1, 2004. Submissions will be accepted in either English or Russian and should be sent to the Editorial Board via e-mail at <textbook-2(a)mail.ru>. Works submitted in either Russian or English will be translated into the other language and the book will have both Russian and English editions. Prix Ars Electronica - Digital Communities

Dear All, I am pleased to announce that I will be a member of the nominating jury (doing a pre-selection of the entries) for a new category of the Prix Ars Electronica prize competition. The Ars Electronica Center and ORF Oberösterreich (Austrian Broadcasting Company, Upper Austria Regional Studio) in Linz, Austria the organizers of Prix Ars Electronica, the world's most renowned and highest endowed competition in the digital arts are pleased to announce that a new "non-artistic" category, Digital Communities, will be added to the Prix Ars Electronica in 2004 to mark Ars Electronica's 25th anniversary. This new category of the Prix Ars Electronica prize competition (that has been showcasing the latest trends in art, technology and society since 1987) will be dedicated to these highly dynamic, leading edge social phenomena. The social potential of digital and networked systems defined to include the wide-ranging effects of the Internet as well as of so-called mobile space encompasses a broad spectrum of phenomena, programs and initiatives in which social innovation is taking place, as it were, in real time. This is also the domain in which debates surrounding the issues that will have a major impact on our futurefor example, the establishment of technological standards, the treatment accorded to intellectual property, and conflict at the point where the right to privacy meets the necessity of surveillanceare launched and carried out. Discussions surrounding the creative commons and peer-to-peer computing, phenomena like collective blogging on the Internet or flash mobs that form spontaneously via mobile communication are among the latest developments; others include new forms of online collaboration in learning, gaming and fan communities, digital neighborhoods, and citizen consensus conferences. This new Prix Ars Electronica category is designed to recognize the initiators and propagators of these communities, the persons whose work deals with these thematic domains, as well as the developers of the relevant technologies and the theoreticians who identify these emerging phenomena and help the public come to terms with them. The prizes in the Digital Communities category will total 40,000 Euros for two Golden Nicas and four Awards of Distinction. Submissions deadline is March 12, 2004. The Nominating Jury of this new category will be held in Linz, Austria from April 16 - 18, 2004. A week after the Nominating Jury the Awarding Jury will make the final selection. The two Golden Nicas and the Awards of Distinction in the "Digital Communities " category will be presented at a special ceremony,hosted jointly by Ars Electronica and SAP,held in New York in June 2004.The winners of the Golden Nicas and the Awards of Distinction commit to accepting their prizes at the "Digital Communities " Gala in June 2004 in person (or through a proxy nominated in advance)and to present their project at the Prix Ars Electronica Forum in September 2004 in Linz, Austria. The "Digital Communities" category is open to political, social, and cultural projects, initiatives, groups, and scenes from all over the world utilizing digital technology to better society and assume social responsibility. It is meant to recognize the initiators and propagators of these communities as well as the developers of the relevant technologies, and to honor those whose work contributes to the establishment and proliferation of Digital Communities as well as provide understanding and research into them. Two Golden Nicas will be awarded in order to recognize the vast array of relevant projects between grassroots operations and professional solutions, the diversity of approaches and aspects from community innovation to social software excellence as well as the broad spectrum of submitters involved, ranging from private initiatives to public institutions. Particular emphasis will be placed on a project's "community innovation," its sustainability, and its appropriate use of technology optimized for the end user. This could be a novel method for connecting already existing technology or optimizing the use of an available infrastructure. Jury members will be looking to recognize technological-social solutions, "social software tools," and infrastructure with great promise, as well as the brilliant realization of such concepts. Their evaluations and decisions will honor visionary and forward-looking projects; those that display consummate social and technological innovativeness and have been implemented with tremendous success. In their selection, the jury will place particular emphasis on the reasonableness, appropriateness, and openness of the solutions. Digital Communities projects should enable human beings to enjoy the widest possible access to technology, networks, and the "Digital Commons." The winning projects should be able to serve as a model to be copied by others, and, in their orientation on the future, be a source of inspiration, encouragement, and enablement.
