http://research.it.uts.edu.au/creative/CandC5/ 5th CREATIVITY AND COGNITION CONFERENCE CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS Creative Process and Artefact Creation: Practice, Digital Media and Support Tools April 12-15th 2005 Goldsmiths College, University of London, UK Submission Deadline: 1st October 2004 Creativity and Cognition 5 will take place in London in April 2005. The main theme of the conference is the creative process and the creation of artefacts: understanding creative practice, art works employing digital media and creativity support tools. The Creativity and Cognition Conference of 2002 provided both the excitement of the new and at the same time, revealed a growing maturity and strength that can now be demonstrated in the 5th conference. CHALLENGES FOR THE CREATIVITY AGENDA There are important challenges facing the creativity community, not least of which is to reconcile the broad base of disciplines and their contending agendas with the need to establish a clear sense of direction, albeit an interdisciplinary one. Some of those challenges include: * What should the focus of creativity research be? * How can digital tools for supporting specific creative domains be transferred for the benefit of all people in any domain: in other words produce generally applicable results? * Can the effectiveness of a given tool in helping a creative person accomplish his goal be measured, and if so, how? * What is the impact of using different tools and technologies on simple creative tasks and how do we conduct comparative studies in this area? * What are the critical breakdowns in the creative process across domains and whilst using different forms of digital media. * What is the impact of collaborative work on our notions of ownership and intellectual property rights? CREATIVITY AND COGNITION COMES OF AGE Creativity and Cognition, as a field of research has evolved and matured since its starting points in the early 1990s. Today it offers tangible value much that is relevant to the development of interactive systems for creative work. The conference series is continuing to provide a forum that strengthens the growing community of researchers and practitioners who are our best hope for delivering new ways of thinking and tools for interaction for the expanding creative future. In the early Creativity and Cognition conferences, the contributions were concerned with theoretical models of creativity and computer-based (autonomous) creativity. The keynote speakers reflected the then current spread of interests and expertise: in 1993, Margaret Boden (Cognitive Modelling), Gerhard Fischer (HCI/Computer Science), Bryan Lawson (Design) and Steve Willats (Art) and in 1999, Marvin Minsky (Knowledge based Systems), Ben Shneiderman (Human Computer Interaction), Harold Cohen (Art) and Stelarc (Performance Art). Since then, computational modelling has given ground and the emphasis in the research community has shifted towards a concern for how to design and build the digital tools needed for the new face of creativity. When the conference first became an ACM SIGCHI event in 1999, there were early indications that people from different disciplines were actively involved in collaborative projects. In 2002 at C&C4, the results of those collaborations were in evidence. In fact, there has been an enormous shift towards the creative arts with technology at the centre, both in the creativity research reported in the papers and the creative practice exhibited in the exhibition. Harold Cohen, Stelarc and Jack Ox represent significant figures in the growing community of practitioners for whom digital media in its most advanced form is a key aspect of the artwork. Increasingly, software tools are being developed specifically with creativity in mind drawing on the growing knowledge of the creative process. IMPORTANT DATES * Submission Deadline 1st October 2004 * Author notification 8th November 2004 * Final Formatted Papers due 13th December 2004 * Conference 12-15th April 2005 Please Note: All papers and works (with agreement for dissemination and/or installation and all appropriate instructions) are accepted for inclusion in the Proceedings and/or Exhibition on condition that one author registers for the conference. SUBMISSIONS There are three types of submission: * Full papers on a nominated conference theme * Proposals for demonstrations related to a nominated theme * Proposals for digital works to be exhibited. Electronic submission can be made at the Conference web site from August 2004 and at the latest by 1st October, 2004. All submissions will be fully refereed by an international programme committee. Accepted papers, works and demonstrations will be published in the conference proceedings. CONFERENCE VENUE The conference will take place at Goldsmiths College, University of London. The successful proposals and papers will be presented in a number of interesting venues. Goldsmiths College’s digital studios situated within the prestigious new building and studios designed by the international architect Will Alsop, make possible the showing of work that uses cutting edge technology. The building houses some of the Visual Arts studios, flexible ground floor showing spaces and a UK Government Research centre for Cognition, Computing and Culture. Further contributions are welcome. No need to be an expert in the measurement of information society. As citizens or scholars all those concerned with ICT policies do have a stake at the way needs, programs and results are presented through statistics, indicators and other measurements. Anxo Roibas and Gitte Stald "You've got the whole wide world in your hand - what u wanna do now?": Relevant socio-cultural and HCI issues in future scenarios of mobile Internet Organisers: Dr. Anxo Cereijo Roibás, a.c.roibas(a)brighton.ac.uk Gitte Stald, stald(a)hum.ku.dk The workshop will explore and analyse crucial socio-cultural implications and related HCI issues in the design of scenarios of ubiquitous interactive communication. Recent developments in communication technologies will strongly extend communication possibilities in ubiquitous contexts. Thus convergent media is becoming one of the main relevant HCI issues. Companies will be able to provide their services holistically across different channels and this will imply a strong integration between all the platforms and interfaces involved (i-TV, PCs, handhelds, etc.). In the users' side, this will imply a seamless and pervasive connection possibility to the Internet and to all its applications and services in the different spheres (leisure and gaming, communications, health, learning, business or their combination as busitainment, edutainment, etc.). Telecommunication companies (network operators, handset manufacturers, service providers, etc.) are investing now in technologies for transmission of multimedia files across mobile phones. But, will users need these applications, if yes, why, when and how will they use them? In order to be able to prospect realistic and relevant future scenarios for this technological -landscape, it is required a strong research in socio-cultural trends. This kind of studies for example, would allow foresights on the unexpected boom of SMS in Europe as well as the mob-logging phenomenon. Objectives of this workshop are: to develop a socio-cultural trends research agenda for this specific issue, to identify and extend the research community in this topic. Moreover, to sensitise designers, sociologists, psychologists, marketers to the particular socio-cultural and interaction-design issues in these kinds of communication scenarios. Participants should submit, to the organisers, a brief position paper of 1-2 pages, or a reference to a socio-cultural issue related to a mobile product or application in which they have been involved. Participants will be selected on the basis of their interest in and familiarity with the topic. No particular skills or knowledge of socio-cultural trends or HCI are required.

Folks, this project has been growing quickly, and the larger it grows, the less time i find myself online. my apologies for not responding in full to Maximilian Forte's thoughtful post. and my apologies, preemptively, if i'm unable to post as much as i would like in the future. Maximilian wrote, among other things, > It's an American thing to think that you can divorce politics from > discussions of political issues such as democracy, citizenship, and good > lord, patriotism--from the article: "The directors of The September Project > are determined to keep politics out of the day's events." first, an IMPORTANT CLARIFICATION. while we were happy in general with the article (which can be read here www.theseptemberproject.org/press) the writer did make one mistake. we are *not* determined to keep politics out of the day's events. rather, we are determined to make this a non-partisan event. apparently the word "politics" replaced "partisan." so, political discussion and engagement? yes. voter registration at every US-based event? yes. a partisan event? no. the only "requirement" we are asking of host organizers is that events are FREE and PUBLIC. that's it. next, to address one of Maximilian's points about the project being an american thing. in many ways, yes, this is an american project. it originated in the US, in seattle. by far the majority -- so far -- of hosts are american: as of today, 132 libraries, schools, and universities in 28 states are taking part. and it takes place on a day -- saturday, september 11 -- that means a lot (and means different things) to many americans. that said, in many ways the project is not an "american thing": 1. it's free! when's the last time you got something for free in the states? 2. it's public! while many countries have town squares and piazzas, the american version of public space is, in general, the mall. or starbucks. for the most part, september project events are fully public and open to all people. (there are exceptions. the events planned for the Alameda County Library Youth Literacy Program at Juvenile Hall are closed to the public. the events planned at the Marine Corps Air Station Base Library in Iwakuni, Japan will be, we believe, closed to the public. although it is unfortunate that these events cannot be public, we believe that having discussions and performances about democracy, citizenship, and patriotism at correctional facilities and military bases is important.) 3. while some may argue that september 11 is an american thing, others argue otherwise. but personally, i believe that the developments that have grown *since* 9-11 -- including but not limited to the War in Afghanistan, the War in Iraq, the continued escalation of violence in the Middle East, various security/privacy measures, etc etc etc -- are anything but american. they affect us all, no? 4. it is in response to this, reason #3, that we are thrilled -- and encouraged -- that folks outside the US have organized events for their own people, addressing their own concerns, taking place in their own countries. so, when Maximilian notes, that > It's an American thing if one of the dominant questions mentioned is: > "What do you like about America?" i would answer, true, but look at the events being planned in other countries. for example: a. in the Netherlands, the University of Nijmegen and the Cultural Centre for the Arts Lux is putting on an inspired conference called "11 september en de Kunsten," which, as you can see from their web site (http://www.lux-nijmegen.nl/debat_info/11september/programma.html) addresses a number of issues, mostly from a global perspective. b. in Australia, the University of Sydney is organizing a conference called "The Italian Effect: Radical Thought, Biopolitics and Cultural Subversion" (http://www.arts.usyd.edu.au/departs/rihss/italianeffect.html) c. in Spain, El Proyecto Septiembre (http://septiembre.ciberpunk.org/) is organizing events in, so far, 6 different cities: Madrid, Valencia, Zaragoza, Melilla, Leon, and Granada. in addition to discussions and debates on democracy, they will be covering issues like immigration, civil liberties, digital liberties, and of course March 11. d. in Portugal, O Projecto Setembro (http://setembro.ciberpunk.org/) is organizing events in, so far, Lisbon, where they will engage in public discussions about democracy, citizenship, and freedom. this email is getting very long, i'm sorry. i hope that i have addressed some of your, Maximilian, questions and i hope that other folks speak out. sometimes it feels as though our voice is the other thing we have. i also hope that some of you may consider organizing events of your own. david silver www.theseptemberproject.org
