Dear all, I couldn't find data on the quanitity of SMS and MMS messages send in Austria. Each Dane sends 102 SMS messages per month

In the first six months of 2004, the 5.4 million Danes have sent 2,958,045,000 SMS messages - or 102 per month on average. In the same period, the Danes sent 4,367,000 MMS messages. SMS messages are short text messages sent from and received on mobile phones. MMS messages are multi-media SMS messages, predominantly sent from camera phones. The use of SMS messages is predominantly a youth phenomenon, but SMS is increasingly used instead of phone-in voting and in mail-in competitions. We need to be careful when comparing the number of messages on instant messaging and via SMS. In the IM world an utterance or a conversational turn does not have a cost attached to each time the author sends a message and thus a conversational turn can consist of several "messages", for example: Hi <carriage return> How you doing? <carriage return> It was good to see you on Thursday <carriage return> All of this illustration may have been a single individual taking one conversational turn. In the SMS world, since every time you send a message you have to pay, the conversational turn would have included the entire utterance shown above. Another issue is that while there are more IM messages than SMS messages, I would bet that there are more mobile phones than PCs in Denmark. I have not looked at the PC adoption in Norway but I think that it is 70 or 80% of the HOMES. About 95% of the PEOPLE have mobile phones. In Norway the mobile customers sent 82 per month. 68 were interpersonal messages, 13 had to do with various services (ring sounds etc) and 1 MMS. While throwing all these statistics around make sure that the comparisons are correct. I thoroughly enjoyed the conference, so thanks to all those who put in the hard work of organising it! For future conferences, I think it would be helpful to have chairs for the sessions. I know this would add to the organisation burden, but perhaps those attending could volunteer from the aoir list, or when registering for the conference? I attended a number of sessions where the panel member acting as chair took longer than anyone else, which is a bit frustrating! Maybe just a volunteer timekeeper from the audience would work? Dear AoIR'ers-- At long last and as promised, I've posted some notes from the AoIR conference on my LiveJournal. If it's your 'thing', please do take a look at my coverage of the pre-conference workshop on qualitative research. I'm sure I made LOTS of spelling and content errors, which I am happy to fix. Just let me know. My hope is that people will use this list to connect to like-minded folks in their respective areas, so the more the merrier! Since my classes meet mondays and thursdays, the days of the schedule don't matter much to me, but I expect that's a somewhat unusual teaching schedule. I also think having one of the presenters act as chair should work fine. Conference absenteeism?

Greetings, This was my first AoIR, and overall I enjoyed and appreciated the conference's tone and rigor, and admired the sense of warm community among participants. I'm curious if AoIR collects statistics about the rate of no-shows, and if anyone knows what the typical absenteeism rate is at other conferences. I ask because I was unexpectedly the only person (of four) on my panel to show up to present. One person did notify the conference staff that she would be unable to attend; I hope that nothing serious had befallen the other two. Is such a high absentee rate a fluke at AoIR?
