I am contemplating an email-based survey of home page owners in the UK. I have some sympathy with Krishnamurthy, S. (2004) "The Ethics of Conducting E-Mail Surveys" in Readings in Virtual Research Ethics : Issues and Controversies, (Buchanan, E. A. ed.) Information Science Pub., Hershey, PA, http://faculty.washington.edu/sandeep/d/emailethics.pdf who suggests unsolicited survey requests could be considered spam and that academics should share lists of opted in email users where possible. So on the off chance this is possible has anyone assembled a reasonably large store of email addresses of UK Internet users - especially of UK home page owners? If I were to assemble a list of UK home page owners and received agreement from those contacted would others be willing and able to share it for their own research? Hi Kate, In your last message you mention networked laptops in conference rooms, are these available in each room? I thought I'd read most rooms only had Macs? If this is the case will they be able to project powerpoint presentations stored on a memory stick? Dear colleagues Some time ago a CfP was posted for the pre-conference workshop MEASURING THE INFORMATION SOCIETY : WHAT, HOW, FOR WHOM AND WHAT ? Co-Sponsored by the European Chapter of the American Society for Information Science & Technology - ASIS&T/EC. G'day ! On the WiFi issue, for future AoIR conferences it might be worth our while to ask the folks who organised ISEA2004 (www.isea2004.net) last month about their experience... That conference had full and open WiFi access to the Net for all delegates in all three conference sites - in Tallinn, Helsinki, and (most impressively) on a cruise ship between Stockholm and Tallinn. internet access

I must have missed this when i chose rooms - otherwise I wouldn't have chosen the standard room. Does anyone know how many computers with internet are available in the 'computer pool room'? It will be interesting to see flocks of people try and use these computers. I guess there will be no session blogging for me this year :( or hardly any access period. Dear Kathleen I've already bounced Lilia's email over to IT services to check this query. Its probably too late in the day to start setting up individual WiFi accounts but I can but ask! For the more general query - there is a computer pool room booked for AoIR delegates to use for the duration of the conference - and these workstations are online. In addition to this the ensuite rooms on campus have internet connection for those with their own laptops, you have to get a phone card but the instructions are in the rooms and phone cards are available on campus. The conference panel rooms all have networked laptops with internet connection as well. Brighton has a load of internet cafe's if you are staying in town and many hotels have internet connection too. I hope this answers your query and I'll get back to you if I have any good news from IT services - some one would have to have a gap in a job queue tomorrow to get this in time for the conference - and the IT services are setting up for the Autumn term so they are a bit pressured right now but if anyone can do anything I'll pass on the word. Dear Lilia I'm sorry but no. I looked into this for the conference but the cost of getting guest ID's for this service was just too prohibitive for the conference budget. Definately one to take forward in future conferences though, could you flag it on AoIR-meet for next year? All the best Kate
