March on -empyre- | Interactive Video for the Web

During March on -empyre-, we'll focus on the work of two artists with strong involvement in interactive video for the Web: Barbara Lattanzi and Nicolas Clauss. In their work, the experience of watching video is significantly altered. Not simply that the video itself is altered, but that the experience of watching it is altered. The viewer becomes also an interactor or annotator or works with downloadable software to alter the video, etc. Barbara and Nicolas will discuss their own work and also point out other interactive video work of interest. Toward our being able to get a sense of the current state of interactive video for the Web and, possibly, where it's going. BARBARA LATTANZI http://wildernesspuppets.net Barbara Lattanzi is a media artist whose current projects involve the construction of software for video improvisation as well as other works of interactive media. Her work has been presented at such venues as the 2003 Ann Arbor Film Festival, the 2002 European Media Art Festival, and Robert Beck Memorial Cinema in New York. Her experimental software, "C-SPAN Karaoke", received an "Honorary Mention" in 2005 at Transmediale, the Berlin-based international media art festival. Her interactive media works have been exhibited at the 2003 Version>03 Digital Arts Convergence - Chicago, the 9th New York Digital Salon, Electronics Alive II Invitational, the 4th Seoul Net and Film Festival, and Turbulence. In 2005 she contributed a gatepage to the Artport website of the Whitney Museum of American Art. The production of her multimedia applets and software has been stimulated in part by the open structures of net-based cooperative venues such as Moscow on-line software art archive, "Runme.org" and Rhizome "Artbase", where her work is included. An essay about Lattanzi's software in relation to 1970s experimental film appears in Millenium Film Journal Nos.39/40. She currently teaches at Smith College in Massachusetts. NICOLAS CLAUSS http://www.flyingpuppet.com Flyingpuppet.com is the work in progress of Nicolas Clauss, a Paris based painter who stopped "traditional" painting to use the Internet as a canvas. Nicolas's site is a place of experimentation offering pieces where interactivity and play are essential. Wall Street Journal -- "digitally tone deaf"?

I thought this article might be of interest to many on this list. I've thought about similar issues with regards to academic journals. That is, if the reference is not available online, how likely are people to make the effort to go to the library and make a copy? Do citations decline? Many American Psychological Association articles are not available online. And for ones that are, it has only been in the last year that even UC Berkeley provided access for students. Now, if you're Psych Review or the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology (the field's top journals), maybe you can get away with this, but for how long? At least with those pubs you can find the citations, if not the full text. Evidently not necessarily true for WSJ. - Jennifer ---------- Whither The Wall Street Journal? By Adam L. As importantly, the next generation of readers is growing up by accessing news over the internet, and one place they are not surfing to is WSJ.com. This cohort will include the three visiting positions advertised here as well as fellows selected from among USC faculty and graduate students. The visiting fellows will be expected to pursue their research in residence at the Annenberg Center during the 2005-06 academic year. They will collectively be responsible for organizing one conference and a monthly speaker series and will be expected to attend and organize a weekly seminar of graduate, postdoctoral, and faculty fellows on the theme of Networked Publics. They may not hold any other appointment during the period of the fellowship. The postdoctoral fellowship is intended for scholars who have completed their Ph.D within five years of August 2005. It carries a stipend of $40,000 in addition to a limited amount of funds to support research and relocation expenses. The visiting scholar position is intended for a mid-career scholar with a well -established track record and demonstrated leadership and expertise related to the theme. if anything, "social software" needs to find a better/more descriptive name for itself. generally, it seems to describe a fairly tightly constrained/circumscribed subset of the available socia[b]l[e] media. were i to submit a paper on some aspect of IRC, a *very* sociable (and fairly popular) software medium, would it likely be rejected? it is hard to tell from the text of this announcement. A new wave of tools for communication and collaboration has surfaced under the name 'social software' including tools like weblogs, wikis, del.cio.us, Flickr, tagging, etc. Researchers are exploring how these tools fit into everyday life and how they can be employed in professional contexts. The goal of the conference is to bring together researchers working in a variety of academic disciplines to understand current and possible uses of social software in the academic context. We invite submissions for papers, panels and demonstrations of relevant research tools.
