I am a former Cambridge M Phil student seeking to continue towards my PhD in sociology or political science field, with focus on the use of communication technologies. I have some years of experience in international development, employing communication technologies, and in government Internet-policy work. Would academics in this list recommend good Universities I can complete my PhD, where there might be scholarships/grants for international students. Hello all, I am a PhD student at the University of Durham in England in my final year, presently writing up my thesis on the social aspects of young people's internet and cell phone use. The main focus of my work is how social anxiety and social phobia relate to the use of these technologies. I am currently looking for a post-doc position in this field. Questions re multiple conference submissions

I'm beginning to get questions about whether you can submit multiple submissions to the IR-6 conference. Our aim is to have the most people able to attend and present papers, and to make scheduling as straightforward as possible. Hence, the following guideline ... Individuals may not have their name on more than 2 papers, and may not be individually responsible for presenting 2 papers. In other words, you may submit a single-author abstract, and you may co-author on another one -- but if both are accepted, your co-author will be expected to attend and present the second paper. In creating the panel you will be composing a narrative to submit for the conference. These will be reviewed by AoIR reviewers. So, the issue is to make your submission make sense. If you have lots of people, you will need to show that the many submissions make a whole, and one that conference attendees will want to listen to. You will have to make the case for the non-traditional format. You will need to let reviewers know how each person will contribute to the session (e.g. very short talks, or quick idea presentations), and how you will manage the time and contributions. You have to show how each speaker fits with the overall theme of your panel. Basically, you have to sell this to the reviewers as legitimate, worthwhile, and manageable. Vacancy for PhD-researcher (1,0 fte) 'The Geography and Evolution of the European Internet Infrastructure' Job description The project aims to understand why certain Internet nodes have grown out to major European hubs of high-end Internet and other nodes have not. We expect, apart from the traditional determinants of geographical location and population density, that two other factors affect the growth of bandwidth of a node. First, following Barabasi�s evolving network model, the self-reinforcing mechanism of preferential attachment future connectivity is positively related to current connectivity is important. The time of entry of a location in the Internet will thus affect its current bandwidth. Second, the more a host region is specialised in specific internet-intensive activities (both in academia and industry), the faster its bandwidth grows. The project aims to model these relationships using graph theory, and to estimate the resulting model statistically using data on bandwidth, price (dependent variables), location, population density, year of entry, and specialisation in internet-intensive activities (independent variables) for multiple European countries for the past twenty years. The effect of institutions and policies is also investigated by means of case studies on selected Internet nodes in The Netherlands. The project is financed by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO-NVN). The candidate will become a member of the Urban and Regional research centre Utrecht (URU) and will follow Ph.D. courses provided by NETHUR, ETIC and SIME. The project is a collaborative effort with dr. A. Scharnhorst (KNAW-NIWI) and prof. R. Cowan (MERIT, Maastricht University). Qualifications Candidates with a Master's degree of equivalent (drs.) in geography, transportation studies, economics, sociology, operations research or related discipline, preferably with experience with quantitative research. Terms of employment A full-time PhD-position for four years duration. Gross monthly salary increases from Euro 1.813 in Year 1 to 2.394 in Year 4. We also offer a pension scheme, a health insurance allowance and flexible employment conditions. Conditions are based on the Collective Employment Agreement of the Dutch Universities and salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% per year and a year-end bonus of 2% per year. wireless technology in the classroom

I'm interested in the use of wireless technology in the classroom, *EXcluding* the remote control clicker feedback applications that are so popular in the US right now. If you're using student laptops with wireless Internet access during class as an integral part of class, or PDAs to beam over info etc., I'd be interested in hearing about it. At this point, I'm not interested in whether your students bring their laptops or not, or that they use their cell phones for cheating, or whether you (and you alone) use a laptop, wireless or not. Instead I'm interested in what you as the instructor ask students to do with wireless technology as part of the in-class learning experience. Published articles/chapters, conference papers, unpublished manuscripts, or just personal anecdotes all are welcome.
