OURMedia / NUESTROSMedios 5th International Conference Democracy and the Media www.ourmedianet.org An International Conference Bangalore, India5-9 December 2005 CALL FOR PAPERS, PANELS and PRESENTATIONS *** DEADLINE: August 31, 2005 *** OURMedia/NuestrosMedios is a transnational network with over 400 academics, activists, researchers, practitioners and advocates working across every continent and in more than 40 countries. Its aim is to research, strengthen and support media and information/ communication technologies (ICT’s) that support social justice, human rights, community autonomy and grassroots empowerment. OURMedia Annual Conferences have taken place since 2001 and have become active spaces for enabling strategic collaboration and analysis. Past conferences have been organized in Washington D.C (2001), Barcelona (2002), Barranquilla, Colombia (2003) and Porto Alegre, Brazil (2004). This year the conference will take place in Bangalore, India from December 5-9, 2005. CONFERENCE THEME AND OBJECTIVES In line with previous meetings, Our Media 5 Conference, Democracy and the Media is aimed at building strategies and collaborations among researchers, non-governmental organizations, practitioners, artists and advocates for the promotion of communication rights, effective access to ICTs, and community and citizen participation in the media. This year’s specific focus is on community and grassroots communications for social change and current models and experiences in community participation and advocacy on media and ICT in the region will be showcased. Presentations will be mainly in English, with Spanish translation. PANELS The Conference Planning Committee is seeking proposals for three types of sessions: 1) PANELS: There will be 10-12 moderated panels allocated during the 3-day conference which may be organized around individual paper presentations, or small roundtable debates/discussions where panelists respond to a series of questions/problems established in advance. 2) PARTICIPATORY PROJECTS: are being framed as facilitated discussion groups, or group presentations on major case studies of relevant projects action plans or program implementations. 3) SCREENINGS: media projects or excerpts of no more than 20 minutes that reflect the topics of the organization and annual conference theme. AoIR 6.0 Chicago 2005 Site Update & Registration Reminder

The web site for AoIR 6.0 in Chicago has been updated. One of the key items of information is a link to an excellent web site with information about the city of Chicago (the direct link to the page is http://conferences.aoir.org/registration.php?cf=3) I also want to remind you that the deadline for early registration is August 26, 2005, so there is only one more week during which to secure the lower registration rate. To register for the sixth annual conference of the Association of Internet Researchers (to be held in Chicago October 6 - 9, 2005 with pre-conference workshops held on October 5, 2005) at the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile hotel go to: https://www.conted.vt.edu/ssl/aoir/index.lasso You will be able to pay the registration fees by credit card or by check. Call for Chapters - Submission Deadline Oct. 1, 2005 For the Edited Collection Handbook of Research on Open Source Software: Technological, Economic, and Social Perspectives Edited by Kirk St.Amant and Brian Still, Texas Tech University INTRODUCTION The decision to purchase or to use a particular software product can be the choice that results in the success or the failure of an organization. For this reason, decision makers at different levels and in a variety of fields need to understand the factors that contribute to the effective adoption and use of software products. Open source software (OSS) is increasingly viewed as a viable option that can allow a variety or public and private organizations to achieve their desired goals. OSS adoption and use, however, is complicated by the social agendas and the economic goals many individuals attach to the use of OSS materials. OBJECTIVE OF THE BOOK The purpose of this handbook is to provide readers with a foundational understanding of the origins, operating principles, legalities, social factors, and economic forces that affect the uses of OSS. For this reason, the proposed handbook would focus on areas and concepts essential to understanding when and how various organizations should adopt OSS. Chapters would present short (3,500-5,000 word), focused perspectives on a particular aspect of OSS adoption and/or use. Dr. Gerber has a moderate collection of Internet scam messages, and wanted to know if anyone might be interested in having them for analysis, etc. Otherwise, he's getting ready to delete this file. Please send replies of interest to Dr. Mike Gerber, Professor of Education, Gevirtz Graduate School of Education, UCalifornia Santa Barbara, 93106, CA, mgerber(a)education.ucsb.edu; http://education.ucsb.edu/people/gerber.html What I've been collecting are emails delivered to my normal university account since July 10, 2002 (the last was July 28, 2005). I believe there are 127 separate emails. There are occasional duplications of nominal sender and message, sometimes duplications of message with different nominal senders. Most claim to be from Africans, some claim to be from Europeans, and occasionally some claim to be from someone in North America. All are confidence schemes related to large amounts of money that have come into the possession of the sender. Some relate either to lottery winnings received by the sender or to claims that the recipient has won a lottery. I quote one exactly below as an example. So, that's it. If you know someone who wants them, I'm happy to send them on even though I imagine anyone using email has probably seen dozens of these. Dear Fiona! I am a PhD student doing social network analysis of distributed communitites in a Nordic telecom company. My focus is on how the employees manage to develop social ties in a highly distributed aorganization, and how they invoke communication media to support this. I am doing quantitative as well as qualitative studies of four communitites this autumn, and it is possible for me to have a chapter ready in february next year. The three sections will be: Love & Sex; Work & Education; and Methods & Ethics.
