Hi all - I generally just lurk, but I was struck by a discontinuity in discussion last Thursday and think it bears on this question of becoming inured to shock. There were 6 posts on "London...the internet accounts" interspersed with 4 on "AoIR 6.0 Chicago 2005 Registration is now open", 1 each on "iCS 8.2", "Call for proposals", and "Internet and fun/joy/pleasure". In the three days since, "London" vanished, some of the other threads continued, and new ones appeared. This is no doubt the nature of most conversations on this list, and perhaps everything that could be said about shock and bearing up and giving sympathy was expressed in the comments that were posted, and/or continuation has moved to other venues. But I had some cognitive dissonance reading the disparate threads as business-as-usual went on for many (including me) while others were wondering just how "usual" their lives were going to continue to be. I'm not familiar with any of the literature on shock, but some levels or layers of protection are evident in the acts of just getting on with things, whatever those immediate things that consume us may be. At the same time, I'm aware it would also be counterproductive (at least to purposes of peace and justice) to mine the event for all its tragedy, as this would play into political efforts to cast the attack in symbolic terms that fuel nationalisms and other hatreds. AOIR on AUT

LOL. I am amused by the idea that supporting AUT would be political but opposing them is OK because it is non-political. This is doubleplusungood doublethink isn't it. FWIW I support AUT.There is an advert on British TV to encourage people to vote It says "If you don't do politics, you don't do anything." and suggests that if you are interested in the world around you then you are de facto interested in politics. I favour a boycott of Israel, not because of its effect of otherwise on the brutal oppression of the Palestinians but because we do not have to be accomplices in that brutal oppression and a boycott is a non-violent civilised way to express that. You have only to listen to the intemperate language with which the Israeli right has responded - rejecting AUT as irrelevant and in the same breath denouncing them as terrorists - to see that it is having an effect. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Today, GoogleAlert told me that my name cropped up in: http://www.explore-biography.com/biographies/B/Barry_Wellman.html I went to the entry and found the following: "Barry Wellman is a professor in the department of Sociology at the University of Toronto. His areas of research is Urban Sociology, Internet and Social Structure, and Networks in organizations. He has been a professor of Sociology at the university of Toronto since the late 1960's after graduating from Harvard University. "Professor Wellman is known for his eccentric style of teaching and is author of many books and articles on Sociology and particularly the Sociology of the Internet. "He has an extensive website with many of his publications availalbe for reading: http://www.chass.utoronto.ca/~wellman/" Page Info (in Firefox) says it was written on July 1, 2003. Let's ignore the inaccuracies in this (mostly by omission) -- and I dispute "eccentric teaching". What gets me is that this entry is IDENTICAL to the entry on me in Wikipedia, including the mispelling of "availalbe" [sic]. Page info is no help, as it says June 6, 2005 but I first encountered the Wikipedia entry many months ago. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Wellman I don't know who copied from whom first, but I don't see either of the entries acknowledging the other. Strikes me that plagiarism lurks here. Or, am I just an old fuddy-duddy who was taught (by Tom Lehrer) that the difference between plagiarism and research is a citation footnote. 2. Hello Folks! I am currently a PhD student researching the "Edutainment& Convergence: How entertainment techniques can be utilized in higher education?" I am conducting my research from the reverse notion of interviewing media professionals on the topic instead of educators. However, since this is qualitative research, I am interested in actually transforming my dissertation into a documentary and part blog which I have already started. I am interested in how I can tie in learning theory, simulation and gaming theory. I am really interested in interviewing a gaming producer or two. Since I am a television/film producer/director by trade I am a novice in higher education, so I am hoping not to upset to many people with my hybrid research methods of IM, email and actual interviews. [Hope this is of interest to air-listers; apologies for x-posting] Call for papers special 'Mobile Phone Culture' issue of Continuum: Journal of Media and Cultural Studies (20.3, 2006) edited by Dr Gerard Goggin (g.goggin(a)uq.edu.au) Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies, University of Queensland, Australia In barely two decades since their commercial launch in the early 1980s, mobile telecommunications have now outstripped their fixed-phone counterparts, being used by over a billion people worldwide. Mobile phones play an indispensable and distinctive role in contemporary societies, woven into the transformation of work, leisure, relationships, family, sexualities, glocalization, identity formation, embodiment, and fashion and implicated in class, race, gender, and disability relations. There is now widespread interest in mobile phones among media producers, policy makers, industry, user groups, artists, and educators. And a vibrant, interdisciplinary body of work on social aspects of mobiles is now also emerging. Against this backdrop this special collection aims to focus attention on inquiry into mobile phone culture, and to promote systematic consideration of this important topic by cultural and media studies scholars. Postal mail and e-mail

I am currently writing a literature review on how various communication modalities are used in interpersonal contexts. One modality I am (not surprisingly) finding little material on is postal mail. In particular, I am looking for sources that either (a) address changes in postal mail use with the advent of e-mail or (b) qualitative comparisons of the use of postal mail and e-mail within interpersonal relationships. In particular, I have heard anecdotal reports of e-mail being more "convenient" but postal mail being "special" in a way that e-mail is not, though I have not found scholarly material that documents this perception.
