I and other members of the department (e.g. Pablo Boczkowski, Justine Cassell) will be at the conference and would be happy to meet with people to chat about our department and programs. Eszter http://www.eszter.northwestern.edu --- The Department of Communication Studies at Northwestern University invites applications for up to two tenure-track positions, building on the department's strengths in the study of human interaction and communication technology. The positions are open rank and would begin in Fall, 2006. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in either of two areas: 1. Social network analysis (scholars with strong quantitative skills who employ network analytic techniques in the study of communication phenomena). Search number S-102-06. 2. Computer-mediated communication (including scholars with research programs in, e.g., social computing, video-conferencing, instant messaging, on-line communities). Search number S-103-06. PhD or equivalent is required. Applicants should possess excellent publication and teaching credentials, commensurate with years of experience. Hello everyone, I've been trying really hard to find a copy of the following article Markus, M. L. 1987. Toward a 'Critical Mass' Theory of Interactive Media: Universal Access, Interdependence, and Diffusion. Communication Research, 14(5): 491-511. (or Markus, M. L. 1990. Toward a "critical mass" theory of interactive media. In J. Fulk & C. Steinfeld (Eds.), Organizations and Communication Technology: 194-218. Newbury Park, CA: Sage) without any luck so far. If any of you has an electronic copy of this paper, or has any information about where to get it, I would really appreciate your help. The publisher of "Communication Research" (SAGE Publications) does not have it online, our library does not have a copy of the "Organizations and Communication Technology" book, and the only copy available at Rutgers university (which is the only other place where I could get it) is checked out. A Retrospective and Assessment Authors: Oliver P.E. 1; Marwell G. 1 Source: Sociological Theory, Volume 19, Number 3, November 2001, pp. 292-311(20) Abstract: Between 1983 and 1993 the authors published a series of articles and a book promulgating and explicating "Critical Mass Theory," a theory of public goods provision in groups. In this article we seek to trace the growth, change, or decline of the theory, primarily through an analysis of all journal citations of the theory. We find that the majority of citations are essentially gratuitous or pick a single point from the theory, which may or may not be central to the theory. However, we identify four lines of theorizing that creatively use substantial parts of Critical Mass Theory in their own development: (1) theories relevant to issues in communication studies such as interaction media and shared databases; (2) Macy's work on adaptive learning models; (3) Heckathorn's models of sanctioning systems; and (4) theories that are centrally concerned with issues of influence in collective goods processes. A few additional, less- developed lines of work are also discussed. None of this work identifies itself as being itself "Critical Mass Theory," but many of the innovations and assertions of the theory are important bases for its development. Subject: Seeking Survey Respondents Principal Investigator: Dr. Donald J. Leu Student Researcher: Laurie A. Henry Study Title: Teacher Beliefs about New Literacy Instruction Scale You are invited to participate in a survey that explores teacher’s beliefs about teaching the new literacy skills (reading and writing) that students require when using the Internet. I am a graduate student at the University of Connecticut and a member of this listserv community. I am conducting this survey because I am interested in finding out what teachers believe about teaching students the new literacy skills of the Internet during regular classroom instruction. Survey results will be used to create appropriate professional development sessions for school districts that provide support and resources for the integration of technology (and the Internet in particular) within K-12 school curriculum. Your participation in this study will require completion of an online survey. This should take approximately 5-10 minutes of your time. Your participation will be anonymous and you will not be contacted again in the future. You will not be paid for being in this study. This survey does not involve any risk to you. A number of you have been asking ... Papers should be submitted via the IR conference system. http://conferences.aoir.org/index.php?cf=3 Click on 'Abstract and Paper Submission' and follow the directions. Suggested length is 5,000 words. Any style is permissible, just be consistent and complete in your references. A good style to follow is APA (American Psychological Assocation: look for details online or in their handbook) or whatever you find in use for your favorite Internet journal. Papers are put online to be shared with other conference goers. Soon after the conference, papers will be transferred to a site accessible only to AoIR members. Papers that are submitted are eligible for consideration for the AoIR "Internet Research Annual".
