Hi, I found it interesting to read in the announcement of the new MIT center the following sentence: > > The center's director, Thomas W. JCR Licklider in his 1960 paper, "Man-Computer Symbiosis" (http://ais.org/~jrh/licklider/man-computer_symbiosis.htmll) presented a vision for the direction human computer interaction would take, not the hope of Artificial Intelligence that computers would outstrip humans but the sense computers and humans would enhance each other's possibilities. He wrote: "The hope is that, in not too many years, human brains and computing machines will be coupled together very tightly, and that the resulting partnership will think as no human brain has ever thought and process data in a way not approached by the information-handling machines we know today." Many researchers who contributed to the development of first the ARPANET and then the Internet cite this early paper as inspirational. It seems like JCR Licklider's influence continues. Take care. Virtual Communities OzCHI 2006 Workshop Approaches to the Design of Social Software for Dis-Organisations : A One-Day Workshop in Association with OZCHI 2006 http://www.ozchi.org/ CALL FOR DESCRIPTIONS OF WORK-IN-PROGRESS This workshop will address the collaborative needs of organisations that are distributed or otherwise informally structured. In particular we will explore approaches to the design of tools that support increased communication and social interaction within such groups. Traditionally, support systems have been introduced from the top downwards but there is increasing evidence to suggest that alternative approaches can be even more effective. The increasing use of bottom-up, emergent technologies such as wikis and weblogs, is a well-known phenomenon. This workshop seeks to address approaches for the design of such tools. Further details are available here: http://www.virtual-communities.net.au/ozchi06/ We invite one-page descriptions of work-in-progress relevant to this area. Authors of accepted descriptions will be given a chance to present their work at the workshop. The descriptions will appear in the proceedings. Also computers do NOT really do 2 things parallel, they just do this 2 things very fast and we percieve it as multitasking. But what is really multitasking in our life? Do we multitask if we change tasks every 1 minute, every hour or every day? Can we call it multitasking when we go only for lunch? (Probably not because we are not used to call it multitasking.) I never know what can I call multitasking and what I can't, do you have any criteria for this? Btw I presented a poster about adolescents' multiple communication at the EARA conference in Antalya, you can find it on my web: http://www.terapie.cz/materials/smahel-antalya-2006.pdf It was just an explorative research. I wanted first of all to show the connection between the flow phenomenon and the communication multitasking and to say that it is very common among adolescents. Do you know any good papers about multitasking? I know so few of them and I thing that the research is on the beginning here... My students and I at American University did a study in 2004-2005 of college-student multitasking while using IM. Two of the authors (Tim Clem and Brian Rabinovitz) presented the data at AOIR last year in Chicago. I've incorporated some of the data into a book chapter I've written, called "Adjusting the Volume: The Impact of Technology and Multitasking on Discourse Control". defending yourself online vs. offline research

Ulla, I recall a psychologist presenting experimental evidence at a conference at Miami University about three people with two confederates, passing a ball or "ball" to each other. The confederates would purposely leave the subject out of the ball tossing, only passing it to the subject every once in a while. His research showed that online people defended themselves more whereas offline they were more embarrassed to speak up. Online the subjects often wrote protests of their treatment or they at least questioned it. Beth Uhler of Miami U may recall who was on the program for their last conference to identify the author of that research or someone else who was there may recall. cheers, andrea

timeline: TRS 80

Jeremy DePauw says he is really interested in Journalists' use over time. Am I the only one old enuf to remember the TRS-80 from Radio Shack, known as the Trash-80. It had a screen of only a few lines, but a full keyboard, and was small and lite to carry. Smaller than a current ultra-portable. All 4 of my journalist friends of those days (mid-1990s?) carried them. I'm sure a little surfing will find more. FYI: Interesting news about MIT's planned attempt to publish a "Wikipedia" style collaboratively written scholarly book. I think the more fascinating story is the initial varying reaction of the media headlines from "MIT Opens Junk Science Institute" to "MIT Looks to Give 'Group Think' A Good Name" ====================================================================== MIT Invests in Collective Research Today administrators at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology unveiled the Center for Collective Intelligence <http://cci.mit.edu/>, a program that would use technology and what officials describe as "large numbers of people" to solve business, scientific, and societal problems. The center's director, Thomas W. Malone, cited Google and Wikipedia as inspiration for the center. He said the basic research question there would be "How can people and computers be connected so that, collectively, they act more intelligently than any individuals, groups, or computers have ever done before?" One of the center's first projects will be a Wikipedia-style business book about the effects of social networks on business operations. The SEI Center for Advanced Studies in Management at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and Pearson Publishing will also be involved.
