CMC vs the other stuff

Sam Tilden just wrote: "Most of the research in CMC seems to "assume" differences between CMC and other media such as telephone and letter-mail. I have been unable to find research that clearly delineates this difference. Can anyone help me here." Someone once wrote that whenever someone asks for something, Barry replies: "We did a paper on this." In reply to Sam's Q: Several papers, but mebbe not quite what he wants. 1. We have a bunch of papers in the past decade, showing differences in the frequency of CMC vs phone vs FTF use -- and who uses it. Go to my site, and see the National Geographic paper with Anabel Quan-Haase, the organizational analyses with Anabel Quan-Haase (surprised at how few on the AoIR list seem to study organizational use); the Netville stuff by Hampton and Wellman; the Pew "Strength of INternet Ties" by Boase, et al; the Connected Lives paper by Wellman & Hogan; the Networked Households paper by Kennedy and Wellman. 2. However, we don't have much (yet) on how it is used, and nothing on differences in content and cognition. 3. Sam also asks for letter-mail. Basically, it's only used by individuals for greeting cards and a rare perfumed love note. When we have data on it, it's at the bottom of the Y-axis. OTOH, those studying weak ties should take greeting cards seriously, even if they've gone back to postal, instead of e-greetings (Why?). As I recall, there was a paper in ASR or AJS about this. Hi folks. For those of you attending the 4S - has anyone come up with a solution to their not providing any laptop projectors? <boggle> We (our panel) have been trying to dig up ones to bring but with no luck. Dear AoIR-ists, At CATaC'06, Patrizia Schettino presented the work of her and her colleagues Lorenzo Cantoni, Francesca Fanni, Isabella Rega, and Stefano Tardini ("Localization of Blended Courses in Salvador de Bahia" - in F. Sudweeks, H. Hrachovec, C. Ess (eds.), Fifth international conference on cultural attitudes towards technology and communication 2006. Perth: Murdoch University, p. 202-216.) Ms. Schettino and colleagues describe here the work of Valentina Johanna Baumgartner: 2003. Diploma Thesis: A Practical Set of Cultural Dimensions for Global User-interface Analysis and Design. University of Vienna. I find the description of Ms. Baumgartner's work fascinating - she developed a matrix of 29 culturally-related dimensions by conjoining Hall, Hofstede, and several others, and surveyed both web designers and web communication experts. Both a copy of her survey questionnaire and the diplom-arbeit (in German) can be easily retrieved from the web. (The upshot: Hall's distinction between high context and low context communication, along with "technological development" - roughly, a measure of cultural exposure to and attitudes towards technology, derived from D. A. Victor, ranging from hostile to embracing - are most important, followed by Hofstede's axis of uncertainty avoidance and Hofstede-related axes of time perception (related to long-term orientation) and authority conception (related to power distance).) My question: does anyone know of any current or planned research using this questionnaire and/or matrix of cultural dimensions? It looks very promising to me - especially as it moves us well beyond Hofstede and Hall to much more fine-grained analyses of culture online, ones that would be much better at articulating regional and local, not just national differences. But what do I know? (don't answer that, please). Making history

I am struck by the "Primacy syndrome" that seems to affect many Internet enterprises. First research group, First academic program, First communities of some sort, First you name it ... As if being, or having been, the first or one of the first matters over such a short period, except for the analysis of the genesis and history of ideas. The latter might show by the way the dominant influence of real world structures, linguistic, academic, demographic, economical, competitive, etc. on the cyberworld. Without any intention to downplay the value and role of OCS, I'd like to mention that the virtual community Mistica -*M*ethodology and *S*ocial *I*mpact of the *I*nformation and *C*omunication *T*echnologies in *A*merica (http://funredes.org/misitica) started in February 1999 and has been quite effective in catalyzing Latin American and Caribbean views about the social impact of ICT in the region. Information about the results of the selection process - September 2007: Publication of the FQS Special Issue: Virtual Ethnography 1. Introduction This special issue aims to gather different scientific work that deal with some of the theoretical, empirical and methodological topics currently faced by virtual ethnography. Ethnography is a fundamental methodology in social and cultural research. Ethnography allows the researcher to reconstruct the meanings and materials that shape the cultural collectives he or she analyzes. Ethnography is also a qualitative approach in social and cultural studies of the Internet and digital technologies such as mobile phones, videogames, etc. Though it has been used for more than a decade for studying Internet phenomena, there still remain many methodological difficulties when developing ethnographies on/of/through the Internet. This special FQS issue will contribute to the current debate that ethnography faces when the Internet and digital technologies are a fundamental part of its object of study and fieldwork. The main topics of interest are 1. the alteration of both the epistemology and interpretation frameworks and 2. methodological, empirical and theoretical challenges raised by the ethnographies on/of/through the Internet. Methodological, theoretical and empirical papers will be accepted. We are especially interested in studies that address the following topics: * Fieldwork construction: How do ethnographers develop their notion of "field" in ethnographies of the Internet? * How does the virtual/digital change the epistemological framework for ethnography? * What is the role of the ethnographer's experience with technologies, and how can it be managed in the research process? * How should technological artefacts (software and digital devices) be treated in virtual ethnographies? * Is it necessary to introduce the material dimension and not only the symbolic issues of technical artefacts in virtual ethnographies * How handles ethnography the observation of communicative activities supported by digital technologies? 2. OPEN CALL FOR PARTICIPATION Workshop on Surveillance & Inequality March 16-18, 2007; Arizona State University; Tempe, Arizona, USA This workshop will bring together a multi-disciplinary and international array of scholars studying the social implications of contemporary surveillance with a particular interest in questions of the public sphere, equality, civil liberties, privacy, and fairness. Currently, questions involving the collection of personal data command the attention of policymakers and the general public, both within the U.S. and beyond. Surveillance has become a key mechanism employed in both public and private sectors to contend with the uncertainty raised by threats of terrorism and other criminal activities. Surveillance is also increasingly important with respect to issues of commerce, work, and interpersonal relations. With changes in surveillance technologies and practices, public concerns have multiplied about potential encroachments upon privacy, civil liberties, and public spaces. These tensions have not gone unnoticed by social scientists and humanities scholars studying surveillance, but thus far especially in the U.S. there have been few opportunities to bring researchers together to discuss the many social issues and inequalities surrounding new surveillance systems. We will hold a three-day workshop in March 2007, centered around issues of social justice with regard to surveillance. The objectives are * to foster interdisciplinary dialogue on contemporary surveillance issues, * to map core areas of surveillance research to locate collaborative opportunities and existing research gaps, and * to facilitate graduate student training. Given the diversity of scholarly interest in and approaches to surveillance, the workshop will be structured around discussion themes that individuals from any disciplinary background can participate in. The central organizing question will be What research projects are needed to better understand and mitigate inequalities within a surveillance society? In order to examine differential experiences of surveillance, the workshop will be organized around several thematic areas, including * privacy/trust * citizenship/governance * mobility/identity * power/control * fear/danger * equality/fairness The findings of the workshops will be disseminated by means of a special issue of the journal Surveillance & Society and possibly as an edited book. Travel stipends, food, and lodging will be provided for all participants. Participants will be chosen to provide a balanced representation of both junior and senior scholars, disciplinary training, and international perspectives. Graduate students and participants from outside the U.S. are especially encouraged to apply. Potential participants should submit: * A 500-750 word abstract that discusses how your current and/or future research fits with the proposed workshop theme of surveillance and inequality, and * A two-page curriculum vitae or resume, listing your relevant publications and experience. sharing Endnote

Within NetLab, with 5 PCs, we have Endnote on the server, and as long as one person is accessing at a time, it works fine under a single license. This is a bit of a kludge, but only a bit. It should work fine from a distance, if you use a remote access program like PC-Anywhere. We also ship our updated bibliography by zip file weekly to remote NetLab folks who have their own Endnote software. As for a multi-user, multi-site setup for a real network, that's beyond my ken. But we have 16K items on the biblio (no abstracts or long notes though), and it has never given us a problem.
