Can anybody recommend a recent overview book (authored or edited) on CMC that would be suitable for an undergraduate class? It's for a class on Technology and Literacy. I plan on using my own recently released _Laptops and Literacy_ to cover issues related to K-12 education. I'd like to use one additional book that gives an overview of CMC (email, text messaging, Web, bulletin boards, blogs, wikis, etc.) suitable for undergraduate students at a research university. Couldn't help noticing in Oct 24 NY Times that 12,888 people have "friended" Hillary Clinton on MySpace. My spies tell me that only 1 person has "friended" George W. Bush. But that person, of course, is Osama Bin Ladin! As George says, quality beats quantity. And I am having a silly day. Call for papers Brazilian Journalism Research (BJR) Vol. 3, Number 1 - Semester I, 2007 Special Edition on Freedom of the Press Brazilian Association of Journalism Research Unesco Office in Brazil Deadline: January 31th. 2007 Editor: Luiz G. Motta, UnB, Brasil In cooperation with Unesco Brasil, the journal Brazilian Journalism Research is now announcing a call for paper for its special edition on freedom of the press to be printed on Semester I, 2007. The journal will publish either theoretical essays or research reports. The deadline for submitting articles is January 31rst. 2007. Articles should necessarily deal with the main topic of this special edition or with related themes such as freedom of the press as basic human right, freedom of the press and democratic values; role of media for democratic governance; law, regulation, policies and the public interests; safety of journalists, the question regarding the impunity of crimes against journalists; privacy and freedom of expression; media freedom and political speech; access to information and other related topics. Brazilian Journalism Research (BJR) is a semi-annual scientific journal published by the Brazilian Journalism Researchers Association (SBPJor). For further information about BJR and SBPJor, please visit the website (www.sbpjor.org.br) The association is dedicated to theory and research on journalism (theoretical and empirical). The journal is totally edited in English. Schedule for Vol 3, number 1 Call for paper: January 31rst 2007 Editorial decisions: March 31rst 2007 Editing and printing: April 2007 Submission: Articles for this especial edition should necessarily deal with the main theme, freedom of the press or related themes. Preference will be assigned to articles describing empirical research reports; the articles should be original in the English language. Dear AoIR-ists, On behalf of the AoIR Executive Committee - we request expressions of interest from internet researchers in Europe who would wish to host the 2008 AoIR conference and serve in the role of Conference Chair. (While preference has been expressed to locate the conference in southern Europe in that year, we are happy to receive expressions from any part of Europe.) The Conference Chair role is a major one, involving significant administrative work and financial responsibility. It is the Executive's expectation that Conference Chairs will have: experience in conference organisation; access to assistance from other local staff and students; and be prepared to make a strong commitment to the success of the conference - e.g., by seeking out additional financial support for the conference in the form of sponsorships, local institutional support, grants, etc. The Conference Chair will work along with a Program Chair, who is responsible for the academic program of the conference, as well as a member of Executive Committee in organising the conference.
