Someone has praised APA style over MLA. As MLA is about the only style I haven't used, I can't comment. But I hate the first initial fixation of APA. It dehumanizes people to be reduced to B. Wellman from Barry Wellman. Not only that, it is often confusing. For example, my wife and I were once forced to publish a paper APA style as B.S. Wellman and B.S. Wellman. (It did end any debate over priorities, though.) A note on (online) bibliography

The type and number of bibliographic sources of this work merit a couple comments. First, most of the primary sources are online, and have only been online. Quotations from e-mail and most exclusively online resources have no page numbers associated with them. Second, many of the printed sources (primary and secondary) are now online. This is common in recent works where authors place versions of a print publication online, or where older works are now in the public domain and have been republished online. In such cases I use the publication date of the version I used. If necessary, I include the original publication date in prose adjacent to the reference, and I include it in the title of the work in the bibliography. For example the bibliographic entry for Project Gutenberg's 2004 republication of H. G. Wells' "A Modern Utopia" would be: Wells, H. (2004). A modern utopia (1905). (6424). Retrieved on September 20, 2006 from < http://www.gutenberg.org/dirs/etext04/mdntp10h.htm >. The page numbers associated with print-only sources obviously correspond to the printed page. For those sources that are also online, the page number might be associated with the pagination of the printed online resource from which I first took my notes, or the printed material, for which I later found an online copy. I believe it will be clear to the reader which is the case. Third, for some recent sources, there are many publications by the same author in the same year. After a couple of years of experimentation with the software I use to manage this material I have settled upon the convention of identifying such a source by appending a token to the publication year that is composed of the first three substantive words of the title. So, instead of using the letters [a-z], which some bibliographic systems use, my reference for Wikipedia's "Neutral Point of View" article is: (Wikipedia 2006npv). This provides stability across additions/subtractions to the bibliography and across chapters, and is comprehensible to the author and hopefully the reader. Finally, Web sources do change, particularly Wiki pages! Wherever possible I include the date of the version of the resource to which I am referring. Wikimedia resources are also identified by their versioned, "stable" or "permanent," URL. It is possible that I will reference different versions of the same Wiki page. All of this may sound confusing, and it was no easy task coming to this understanding, but in the end I hope it is useful. If the intention of bibliography is to permit the reader to follow the author's journey through the sources, the ready accessibility of online resources is a boon to all. ]]

Web/TV convergence request

Hello all, My brother (yes it runs in the family) has a request for references to help him on a project about citizen journalism, especially as it applies to the web influencing TV content. Here is his request, please respond directly to him at the address below as he's not subscribed to this list (I'm working on that...). Thanks. ------ I am interested in studying Current TV, and could use some guidance as I begin reviewing the relevant literature. Current TV (launched by Al Gore and partners about a year ago) is both a web site (Currenttv.org) and a digital cable channel that provides "news" content targeting 18-34-year-olds. While Current TV has a staff of tv producers and reporters who generate short films (what they call "pods"), they also invite ordinary people to make and upload films onto the web site. From there, both the producers and users select particular films to then be shown on tv. Current TV thus represents convergence both between television and the web, and between producer- and user-generated content. It seems to be an attempt to harness the chaos of the web - a mix of hierarchical, top-down programming and horizontal, citizen media (they mark the films produced by users as "viewer-created content" or VC2.) The web site also has links to community forums, blogs, etc. What I am most interested in, though, is the turn toward citizen journalism, and in particular, bringing what primarily has been a web phenomenon to television (which of course is almost entirely the province of corporate media). In East Germany you got a telephone only if the State and the Party deemed you worthy of a private line. In East Germany again, after the construction of the Berlin Wall the state youth organisation, FDJ, climbed on the roofs and oriented TV antennas so that they would not get "imperialist" TV stations. But: Twenty (?) years later, Western TV stations were so widely listened to that the state decided to feed them into local East German TV cable nets. So, there is some hope that history might repeat itself. This shows the interest of historical studies of communication systems, I'd say - Frank -- .......................................... Affiliate Marketing

Dear AOIRists, Hi, I am Yukari Seko, a second-year MA student at York/Ryerson University Communication and Culture programme. I am currently working on my MA thesis about suicidal/self-injury blogs, focusing on self-injury community at LiveJournal.com. As a part of my research on blog in general, I am interested in "affiliate marketing" system emerging in blog sphere. In my understanding, the affiliate marketing is a sort of novice method of e-business in which an affiliate is reworded for every visitor or reader provided through his/her efforts. For instance, pay-per-click or pay-per-sale kinds of stuff which offers the owner of site/blog by his/her promotion of sponsors (web hosting services). Currently I am writing a blog in Japanese using a blog service hosted by Amazon.co.jp. At the beginning of this month (October 2006), the provider suddenly changed the whole system and informed me that I have earned some e-credit because of my reader clicked the ads on my blog. It also mentioned about if I would "promote" some products made by Amazon and cooperate companies in my blog, I could gain more e-credit and get a cash back. I was so surprised to know that I was unconsciously incorporated into the affiliate marketing system. In other words, I just found myself making audience commodity for the sale of advertisers. Or maybe I am becoming an opinion reader in blogsphere... Anyways, it made me concern about the advertising structure of blogsphere. So, if someone knows any useful resources/references about "affiliate marketing + blog," could you let me know? Practical bon log application advice

My experience with blogs is limited to reading, and occasionally posting comments to other peoples. But during January I will be co-teaching a travel-study course We would like one of the assignments to be a travel blog for the entire class. We will probably be able to get server space on a university computer. But I need advice on possible software/applications. At a minimum we want our students to be able to input/upload text and images (video would be nice, too). The interface needs to be relatively simple, as we will sometimes be working from cybercafés, with limited time to fuss with things. And, of course, cost is a factor. Any suggestions?
