"unsubscribing" from a social networking site

Dear all There is something I find quite interesting. Someone created an account with one of the biggest social networking sites around using one of my email addresses (without my permission; probably a typo only causing a problem because the social networking site does not seem to verify email addresses). I noticed the unauthorized use of my email address because I received a "new friend" message belonging to that account. Nothing unusual as the respective address is with a popular "freemail" provider and is (ab)used fairly frequently. I merely keep the address as a way to learn how many sites (still) don't use confirmed-opt-in and how sites respond to abuse notifications (some of the sites owned by big media companies are the worst). The interesting bit is the approach the social networking site recommends to solve the abuse problem: > If you are the owner of the email account, you can delete the profile > that is using it. First, from [site], click on the "forgot my > password" link, to have the password sent to the email address > associated with the account. > Then, return to [site], click on 'Account Settings' and then click > on 'Cancel Account'. An email will be sent to the email address used as > the login name to verify Account Deletion. This is a fairly common response actually. Over the years the respective address has been (ab)used to subscribe to quite a few newsletters, join online communities etc. When complaining, most sites suggest I "unsubscribe" by clicking certain unsubscribe links or follow certain "unsubscribe" procedures similar to above. Usually, they are surprised when I tell them I can't unsubscribe something I never subscribed to... after all, it's not my subscription! Just like the above social networking site account is not my account (verified). My impression is the sites just try to off-load inconvenient administration work but by doing so they put third parties not associated with their business dealings in an awkward position. MySpace swearing - new paper

I think sites like MySpace that are full of informal comments are a goldmine of information for anyone interested in informal communication and culture. I don't think we've properly started to exploit this opportunity yet. Comments welcome on the article below (submitted to a journal): Thelwall, M. (2007). Available: http://www.scit.wlv.ac.uk/~cm1993/papers/MySpaceSwearing_online.doc Abstract: Youth-orientated social network sites like MySpace are important venues for socialising and identity expression. Analysing such sites can therefore give a timely window into otherwise hidden aspects of contemporary culture. In this article MySpace member home pages are used to analyse swearing in the U.S. and U.K. The results indicate that almost all young MySpaces and about half of middle-aged MySpaces contain some swearing, for both males and females. There was no significant gender difference in the U.K. for strong swearing, especially for younger users (16-19). This is perhaps the first large-scale evidence of gender equality in strong swearing frequency in any informal English language use context. In contrast, U.S. male MySpaces contain significantly more strong swearing that those of females. The U.K. female assimilation of traditionally male swearing in the informal context of MySpace is suggestive of deeper changes in gender roles in society, possibly related to the recent rise in ladette culture.

effect of Internet on paper consumption?

Dear all, I am preparing to write a paper about the effect of internet commerce on paper consumption in terms of sustainable development. As there has been a lot of debate on whether the internet decreased or increased paper consumption, for example, paperless office, online bill and payment, etc. I am interested in what factors contributed to the increase and what others to the decrease. Do you have any information, or can you provide any resource of the data showing the effect of internet on paper consumption? If there are any statistics of companies which saved the cost by, for example, making the customers move from the traditional paper bill to online bill, it would be great. It would be even greater if any analysis is available of what made or did not make it possible to save the cost in such a way. I need to understand why there are both success and failure in such cases. My focus is on how to decrease the paper consumption with internet, or, whether it is feasible or not. If talking about sustainable development vis-a-vis internet commerce and the use of paper, have You considered taking a wider perspective in account? For example, even if studies WOULD show that e-commerce does reduce the use of paper (as I see, there have been some works that cast some doubts on that fact), the overall impact of ecological cost of producing and constant renewing of ICT's and the infrastructure involved might still render the positive results (in terms of paper use) negative. I think it was in Dordoy, A. & Mellor, M. (2001). Ch 68 „Grassroots Environmental Movements: Mobilisation in an Information Age”. In „Manuel Castells. Volume III. From the Informational City to the Information Age” (2004), eds F. Webster & B. Dimitriou. London: Sage, pp 248-264, where the authors cited Harpold & Philip who said something along the lines "the environmental impact of producing ICTs is very hard to assess". They didnät get to the bottom of the problem though...
