Hi all - I generally just lurk, but I was struck by a discontinuity in discussion last Thursday and think it bears on this question of becoming inured to shock. There were 6 posts on "London...the internet accounts" interspersed with 4 on "AoIR 6.0 Chicago 2005 Registration is now open", 1 each on "iCS 8.2", "Call for proposals", and "Internet and fun/joy/pleasure". In the three days since, "London" vanished, some of the other threads continued, and new ones appeared. This is no doubt the nature of most conversations on this list, and perhaps everything that could be said about shock and bearing up and giving sympathy was expressed in the comments that were posted, and/or continuation has moved to other venues. But I had some cognitive dissonance reading the disparate threads as business-as-usual went on for many (including me) while others were wondering just how "usual" their lives were going to continue to be. I'm not familiar with any of the literature on shock, but some levels or layers of protection are evident in the acts of just getting on with things, whatever those immediate things that consume us may be. At the same time, I'm aware it would also be counterproductive (at least to purposes of peace and justice) to mine the event for all its tragedy, as this would play into political efforts to cast the attack in symbolic terms that fuel nationalisms and other hatreds. In response to Greg Elmer's Q to the list: Yes, people with larger networks do use the internet more. We have only cross-sectional data. THE DOCUMENT ACADEMY INVITES: PROPOSALS FOR PAPERS, PRESENTATIONS, DEMONSTRATIONS AND EXHIBITS AT DOCAM 06 October 13-15th, 2006 University of California, Berkeley School of Information South Hall, Berkeley, California, U.S.A. DOCAM 06 is the fourth Annual meeting of the Document Academy, an international network of scholars, artists and professionals in various fields interested in the exploration of the document as a useful approach, concept and tool in Sciences, Arts, Business, and Society. It is organized and co-sponsored by The Program of Documentation Studies, University of Tromso, Norway and School of Information, University of California, Berkeley. We are delighted to announce that the key-note speaker this year will be Professor Geoffrey C. Bowker, Executive Director for the Center for Science, Technology and Society, Santa Clara University. editing wikipedia

Please forgive my belated response to the wikipedia editing debate, as I am abroad (lovely Harrogate, UK) and only on once per day (or less). I have been actively involved with Wikipedia for about 6 months, and have found it a good experience. I have been surprised by the accuracy of the articles (in general), the comprehensiveness of the articles (EB would never do one on Bronx gangs of the 1950s-1960s), and the activity of people in monitoring vandalism, sillyness, and fixing bad formats, etc. It's an interesting mixture of hierarchy and anarchy. However, I do agree that editing procedures are cumbersome once you want to put in formatting, references, etc. Moreover, it's hard (for me) to find the guides for what to do, and when I do, the guides (as for Referencing) are not as clearly written as I'd like. We need _Wikipedia for Dummies_! Having said that, the standard Wikipedia response would be something like, "Stop complaining. Fix it yourself." Wish I could, but I have neither the expertise nor the time. This may be Wikiblasphemy, but I wonder if a core paid staff of clear technical writers would be useful for preparing such key help tasks. Dear all I’ve recently joined this mailing list and it’s great to see the wide range of subjects that people are working on. I’m currently working on a research project that’s concerned with exploring the challenges and opportunities that networked communications present for the right to freedom of expression. The website for the project is http://www.freedomofexpression.org.uk. At the moment I’m working on the following question: Do digital communications create new opportunities for the public to exchange information and ideas, and access and engage in informed public debate, even in countries where a free press does not exist? I was wondering if anyone knows of any sources of information that would be relevant to this, in particular any research that has been done around the world on how different people use new communication technologies (eg. blogging, citizen journalism, networking), the impact this has on public debate and the implications it has for ‘traditional’ or ‘mainstream’ media. Any pointers or suggestions would be much appreciated. We are especially interested in assessment designs that result in enhanced motivation and engagement and that help equip students to monitor and manage their own learning and feedback. How to Contribute The first way you can contribute is by submitting a short reflective case study of an implementation, design or institutional strategy for assessment or feedback. These should be submitted by 14th March 2007. All case studies that meet a minimum standard will be added, with your name attached, to a digital repository of case studies that will be one of the main conference outputs, regardless of whether you also "attend" and contribute to the conference. We aim to have this collection become an important reference point in the field for those developing both assessment theories and practices. Authors who submit more than one study, or whose study falls under more than one heading are especially welcome. A number of the cases submitted will be highlighted for discussions led by featured facilitators. So if you have a case of particular interest, then here is an opportunity to have it discussed by those at the forefront of assessment thinking and practice. The second way you might contribute is to submit a set of principles of good assessment and feedback practice to add to those we already have (see below). Again, the due date is by 14th March 2007. The third way, of course, is to participate in the conference itself and the discussions. These will be archived (with the participants' contributions identified) and form another major output of the conference. Participants should pre-register (no money involved) in the period 10-18th May 2007. Journal publications and an edited book on assessment based on the conference archive are being planned. Conference Themes This conference is being organised as part of the Re-engineering Assessment Practices (REAP) project (see www.reap.ac.uk <https://nemo.strath.ac.uk/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.reap.ac.uk/> ), a £1m initiative funded by the Scottish Funding Council under its e-Learning Transformation initiative. Dear members of Air-l: I am trying to find some reliable resources in relation to information growth.
