We sought to formulate a policy on plagiarism recently. I suggested perhaps we could copy one from somebody :) Vivas and the examination system are supposed to detect whether the student has understood the subject matter and surely that is the real issue. In many cases essays will contain other people's ideas. If they have *understood* those ideas surely that was the point. Apologies for cross posting Researching and Teaching the Sexually Explicit: Ethics, Methodology and Pedagogy A Day School hosted jointly by De Montfort University and Sheffield Hallam University Room 0.01 Clephan Building, Faculty of Humanities, De Montfort University, Leicester, UK Friday 18 May 2007 11.00 am 4.00 pm Speakers: Martin Barker (University of Wales, Aberystwyth) Professor Barker will discuss his recent research on sexual violence for the BBFC, and address the question: what does the term 'porn' mean to audiences today, and how is it used as a vernacular category to measure expectations? How do people feel about and deal with the question of 'unacceptable arousal'? How do people reflect on the meanings of 'rape' through fiction film? Brian McNair (University of Strathclyde) Professor McNair has been studying sexuality and the media for more than two decades, first as a university student, then as an academic teacher and researcher. His presentation will explore the changing political climate within which mediated sex has been taught and researched in the UK, and his recent experiences presenting courses on pornography and related material at Stirling and Strathclyde universities. Clarissa Smith (University of Sunderland) Although pornography has been a feature of syllabi from social science to literature for at least two decades, a key element in its discussion as a subject for teaching is the necessity to ensure that students are not offended by the material studied. Often controversy can be avoided if the purpose of the module or teaching session is to disclaim pornography and show students just how bad the material is. Dr Smiths presentation discusses whether offence is the only response students might have to pornography screened in the classroom. What happens if we want to examine sexually explicit representations in terms of their pleasures? The event is free but places are limited. US city and/or county internet penetration

Hello, Do any list members have ideas about where I might find up to date statistics on Internet penetration at the City and/or County level in the US. I've found some Netratings stories on broadband adoption from 2004, but that's all. I've been looking for ages and can't find anything else. Any help would be much appreciated. Doug got me thinking when he said, "If you put in a substantive amount of the "plagiarized text," the hash that is stored is output as identical to the original work that has been collected by the company." If the hash is substantive enough to prove plagiarism, then it seems the defense that it's not the original text will fail. I would bet that a 128 bit rate MP3 has less of the original data of any wav file than that hash, and no one would use that argument for saying that an MP3 is not copyright infringement. Besides, the hash is a derivative work if it is not a complete version of the original, and the students have clear rights of both ownership and preparation of derivative works. SMS and cell phone research

Hello all I am a graduate student in the American University School of Communications. I am doing my master's theses on the use of cell phones and sms messaging in activism, particularly in Africa by an NGO called FAHAMU. The broad question I seek to explore is if the use of social media technology by social activist organizations have made them more effective in their work? FAHAMU's use of cell phones and sms activism will be my case study to narrow it down to manageable size. DLB The way that my University uses it, investigations are not initiated on the basis of Turnitin reports. If an assessor suspects plagiarism - on the basis of all of those methods that we have been using for decades - and finds some evidence to support that suspicion, then they can access the Turnitin report and use it to locate additional evidence. Turnitin is primarily used by students to check their citation and referencing before submission. It is not used by staff to detect plagiarism, though once there is evidence of plagiarism, it can be used to locate source documents.
