Re: new media and shock

Hi all - I generally just lurk, but I was struck by a discontinuity in discussion last Thursday and think it bears on this question of becoming inured to shock. There were 6 posts on "London...the internet accounts" interspersed with 4 on "AoIR 6.0 Chicago 2005 Registration is now open", 1 each on "iCS 8.2", "Call for proposals", and "Internet and fun/joy/pleasure". In the three days since, "London" vanished, some of the other threads continued, and new ones appeared. This is no doubt the nature of most conversations on this list, and perhaps everything that could be said about shock and bearing up and giving sympathy was expressed in the comments that were posted, and/or continuation has moved to other venues. But I had some cognitive dissonance reading the disparate threads as business-as-usual went on for many (including me) while others were wondering just how "usual" their lives were going to continue to be. I'm not familiar with any of the literature on shock, but some levels or layers of protection are evident in the acts of just getting on with things, whatever those immediate things that consume us may be. At the same time, I'm aware it would also be counterproductive (at least to purposes of peace and justice) to mine the event for all its tragedy, as this would play into political efforts to cast the attack in symbolic terms that fuel nationalisms and other hatreds. In response to Greg Elmer's Q to the list: Yes, people with larger networks do use the internet more. We have only cross-sectional data. THE DOCUMENT ACADEMY INVITES: PROPOSALS FOR PAPERS, PRESENTATIONS, DEMONSTRATIONS AND EXHIBITS AT DOCAM 06 October 13-15th, 2006 University of California, Berkeley School of Information South Hall, Berkeley, California, U.S.A. DOCAM 06 is the fourth Annual meeting of the Document Academy, an international network of scholars, artists and professionals in various fields interested in the exploration of the document as a useful approach, concept and tool in Sciences, Arts, Business, and Society. It is organized and co-sponsored by The Program of Documentation Studies, University of Tromso, Norway and School of Information, University of California, Berkeley. We are delighted to announce that the key-note speaker this year will be Professor Geoffrey C. Bowker, Executive Director for the Center for Science, Technology and Society, Santa Clara University. Professor Bowker will give his Keynote Address at the end of the conference and comment on the core questions and challenges for document research in the future. JOURNAL OF ELECTRONIC COMMERCE RESEARCH: SPECIAL ISSUE ON VIRTUAL WORLDS CALL FOR PAPERS Special Issue on Virtual Worlds Submissions due: November 1, 2007 Scheduled Publication date: August 2008 Overview: The emergence of virtual worlds and Web 3.D change the way of doing business. Web 3.D is the synonym for Internet-based virtual worlds, where people can create own 3-D *virtual* personalities. Virtual Worlds such as Second Life and others are undergoing an evolution similar to that of the Internet in the mid nineties and might impact profoundly the way people cooperate, communicate, collaborate, and conduct business. The recent entering of companies such as Toyota, American Apparel, Nissan, or Adidas indicate the upcoming role of this platform for the next generation of conducting electronic business. This call for papers is intended to cover a wide range of business and research topics that fall within the broad description of activities, challenges, opportunities, applications, innovations and implications associated with Virtual Worlds as the emerging new online business landscape. Purpose of the Special Issue: The purpose of this special issue is to encourage discussion and communication of important research issues that underpin Virtual Worlds as an important aspect of e-commerce and to showcase interesting and significant research work in this critical area. For conference papers, it should have at least 30% new material. Dear all AoIR will shortly commence the process of electing a new Executive Committee to take office in October this year to serve until October 2009. We are seeking members' interest in nominating for the new executive and providing notice for everyone of the voting timeline and procedures. Here is an overview of the election timeline, procedures and positions for nomination, as determined strictly by the Association's by-laws. Voting instructions will be provided later and separately. **Please note the different timing for officers and other positions** TIME FRAME OF THE ELECTION: 1. Call for Nominations: July 14, 2007 2. Nominations close for the 4 officer positions: July 28, 2007 Nominations close for the 1 grad student and 3 open seats on the executive: August 13, 2007 3. Ballot sent to members August 14, 2007 4. Voting begins: August 14, 2007 5. Voting ends for 4 officer positions: August 24, 2007 Voting ends for 1 grad student and 3 open seats: September 13, 2007 The new committee is formally announced and assumes its duties at the end of the General Meeting AoIR conference, October 2007. During the period of voting, a forum will be available for discussion with candidates. Candidates' statements will also be made available with the ballot sent to members. **Please note you may submit an early nomination (see below) prior to July 14 if you are not going to be in email contact in the nomination period. Your nomination will become active on July 14** A QUICK ORGANIZATIONAL PRIMER: The organizational structure of AoIR is simple. There are 4 officers, 3 open seat representatives, 1 graduate student representative and 2 appointed positions who together with the Immediate Past President make up the 11-member executive committee that runs the show. Elected officials hold their positions for two years. In this election, you are invited to nominate yourself or anyone else whom you think would do a good job, for any position other than the President - the current Vice President assumes the Presidency. In addition the Graduate Student candidates must confirm in their response that they comply with the by-laws: the Graduate Student Representative must be actively enrolled in a degree program at the time of nomination and election and intends to be enrolled for the coming northen academic year (defined to be September 2007-June 2008) The voting system used by AoIR is one vote per member for each of the seven positions for election listed above. Votes are counted by a ballot counter who is a member of the Association but not a member of the executive. In the case of the four officers, the candidate with the highest number of votes shall be declared the winner; in the case of the open seats, the three candidates with the highest, second-highest and third highest votes shall be declared the winners of the open seats. In the case of the Graduate Student representative, the candidate with the highest number of votes shall be declared the winner In the case of tied results for the officer positions, the winner shall be determined by the ballot counter, by drawing of lots, using a method that ensures each of the tying candidates has an equal chance of success and witnessed by at least 1 person independent of the association. In the case of tied results for the open seat positions, the drawing of lots shall be used only when there are more tied candidates than seats available. building online communities

Hi, I am looking for literature that deals with building online communities in light of web2.0. I would be especially interested in market entry strategies - viral marketing, building community's critical mass, etc. Can you suggest anything valuable? Poll on annoying Internet neologisms

Actually I think calling a URL "earl" is rather endearing. None of the top "annoying" neologisms annoy me however. It's a free country, people will develop the language the way they find most convenient and we can't lay down what words will or will not become current. Tell pupils a particular turn of phrase particularly annoys you and you are asking to hear it at every turn. McDonalds know this to their cost. They have tried to have the term McJob (a low-paid non-union job) removed from the Oxford English Dictionary (and forced their employees to circulate petitions). They only attracted adverse publicity and ridicule for their pains. ___________________________________________________________ Yahoo!
