"Hack the Debate" - Twitter and CurrentTV join together

Some of you may already be aware of this. For all the debates in the US presidential election this month, CurrentTV (the network founded by former Vice President Al Gore) has collaborated with Twitter.com to run a program called "Hack the Debate." Essentially what happens is CurrentTV selects messages being posted to their Twitter channel/page and runs those messages on the bottom of the tv screen during the debates. It's a little like Pop Up Video for politics, for those who remember that show. Current and Twitter are both promoting this as being the first time this has ever been done, running live "tweets" over a tv broadcast. I'm sure it's the first time it's been done with Twitter, but running text messages over a tv broadcast has been done before, I'm pretty sure. I've participated in both of these so far. There's a severe lag between what's posted to Twitter and what appears on the television screen, leading to some unintended humor and of course the majority of the actual messages on Twitter don't appear on the television screen (the network is also filtering out profanity, etc.). At first there wasn't much interaction between people posting on the Twitter channel but during the VP debate you started to see more messages being aimed at other people posting, so who knows what will happen during these last 2 debates. http://current.com/topics/88834922_hack_the_debate PS - See some of you in Austin this week, I hope! The Coding Analysis Toolkit: A Hands-On Training at

I wanted to make sure that a.o.i.r. conference attendees were aware of this late addition to the program. I will be doing a free CAT/BAT training on Saturday the 18th at the conference. If you are interested in capturing and coding blog data or coding text in general, I hope to see you there. The Coding Analysis Toolkit: A Hands-On Training Saturday October 18th - 9.00 am (Room: 3A52) Dr. Stuart Shulman is the founder of the Qualitative Data Analysis Program (QDAP), which is a fee-for-service coding lab at the University of Pittsburgh. QDAP and now QDAP-UMass staff and coders work on coding projects funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and other U.S. funding agencies. Dr. Shulman (Oregon Ph.D. 1999) has been the Principal Investigator and Project Director on related National Science Foundation-funded research projects focusing on electronic rulemaking, human language technologies, manual annotation, digital citizenship, and service-learning efforts in the United States. At AoIR, he will lead a hands-on, computer lab-based training introducing to the Coding Analysis Toolkit (CAT), a web-based service designed to facilitate the measurement and reporting the reliability and validity of work completed by multiple coders. He will also introduce the Blog Analysis Toolkit (BAT), which is designed to capture blog posts and archive them for analysis in CAT. In recent years, it has become commonplace for users and organizations alike to engage in such collaborative information behavior. Collaboration may be quite direct when users seek, retrieve, and use information as part of a shared work activity (e.g. research and development project) or learning activity e.g. (collaborative group work); or more indirect as users draw for example on the automated recommendations generated by collaborative filtering and reputation systems. In the fields of information studies, information science, information systems, human-computer interaction, and computer-supported cooperative work, there is a need for an edited collection of articles in this area. Objective of the Book This book will aim to coordinate and integrate current research and practices in the area of collaborative information behavior. It will aim to provide information on empirical research findings, theoretical frameworks, and models relevant to understanding the following aspects: the range of contexts in which collaborative information behavior occurs; the range of approaches, qualitative and quantitative, currently being used to study collaborative information behavior; and the range of systems and practices that enable and constrain its occurrence. Target Audience The target audience of this book will be composed of professionals, educators, and researchers working in the fields of information studies, information science, information management, information retrieval, and knowledge management, human-computer interaction and computer-supported cooperative work. Practitioners who have role in organizational information, communication, and knowledge sharing will also find the publication of value in understanding and assessing the collaborative information behaviors that occur within their organizations. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by November 30, 2009 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by March 15, 2009. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Colleagues/ The Longest Journey Begins With The First Step! /Gerry Online Scientific Repository Hits Milestone | With 500,000 Articles, arXiv Established as Vital Library Resource [ http://arxiv.org/] ITHACA, N.Y. (October 3, 2008) - Reinforcing its place in the scientific community, the arXiv repository at Cornell University Library reached a new milestone in October 2008. Half a million e-print postings - research articles published online - now reside in arXiv, which is free and available to the public. arXiv is the primary daily information source for hundreds of thousands of researchers in many areas of physics and related fields. Its users include the world's most prominent researchers in science, including 53 Physics Nobel Laureates, 31 Fields Medalists and 55 MacArthur Fellows, as well as people in countries with limited access to scientific materials. The famously reclusive Russian mathematician Grigori Perelman posted the proof for the 100-year-old Poincaré Conjecture solely in arXiv. [snip] "arXiv began its operations before the World Wide Web, search engines, online commerce and all the rest, but nonetheless anticipated many components of current 'Web 2.0' methodology," said Cornell professor Paul Ginsparg, arXiv's creator. "It continues to play a leading role at the forefront of new models for scientific communication. [snip] More than 200,000 articles are downloaded from arXiv each week by about 400,000 users, and its 118,000 registered submitters live in nearly 200 countries, including Suriname, Sudan and Iraq. Fifteen countries host mirrors of the main site, which is located on Cornell's campus in Ithaca, N.Y. "It represents an incredible model for scholarly communication that transcends borders, publishers and time," said Anne R. Kenney, Cornell's Carl A. Kroch University Librarian. "We bring operational stability and a demonstrated track record of stewardship to this invaluable open-access resource."
