Room 205 Philadelphia, PA OPEN CALL FOR PARTICIPATION Workshop on Surveillance & Empowerment March 20-22, 2009 Vanderbilt University; Nashville, Tennessee, USA This workshop will bring together transdisciplinary and international scholars studying the social implications of contemporary surveillance with a particular interest in the complexities of empowerment. In the surveillance studies literature, there have been significant contributions on social sorting, digital discrimination, privacy invasion, racial profiling, sexual harassment, and other mechanisms of unequal treatment. In contradistinction, this workshop seeks to explore the potential of surveillance for individual autonomy and dignity, fairness and due process, community cooperation and empowerment, and social equality. Key to this inquiry will be questioning the extent to which surveillance can be designed, employed, and regulated to contribute to democratic practices and/or the social good. The very framing of the workshop in terms of "surveillance and empowerment" begs the question of empowerment for whom and for what purposes. Thus, we seek to provoke a broad discussion about the ways in which surveillance practices may unfairly embody advantages for some groups over others and to explore alternatives. To this end, the workshop organizers seek to include as many different voices as possible, from as many different countries as possible. Given the diversity of scholarly interest in and approaches to surveillance, the workshop will be structured around discussion themes that individuals from any disciplinary background can participate in. Possible research areas might include (but aren't limited to): . Surveillance in post-authoritarian societies - toward restrictions and counters to the unleashed surveillance of former regimes. . Ubiquitous computing environments that provide care for the dependent and elderly. . Social networking tools employed by social movements. . Surveillance of environmental toxins and waste management. . Monitoring of energy consumption at any level. . Surveillance of corporations, government agencies, or political parties by watchdog groups. . Policies for ensuring privacy, accountability, and transparency with video or other surveillance systems. The findings of the workshops will be disseminated by means of a special issue of a journal, such as Surveillance & Society or Theoretical Criminology, or as an edited book. Travel stipends, food, and lodging will be provided for all participants. Participants will be chosen to provide a balanced representation of both junior and senior scholars, disciplinary training, and international perspectives. Graduate students and participants from outside the U.S. are especially encouraged to apply. Potential participants should submit: 1. A 500-750 word abstract that discusses how your current and/or future research fits with the proposed workshop theme of surveillance and empowerment, and 2. A two-page curriculum vitae or resume, listing your relevant publications and experience. CALL FOR PAPERS American Sociological Association Meeting 2009 Section on Communication and Information Technologies San Francisco, Aug 8-11 DEADLINE: January 14, 2008 Only completed papers, not abstracts or letters of intent, may be considered by session organizers. Session #1: Cultural Divergences and Convergences: Mediated Communication, Community, and Social Networks Organizer: Laura Robinson, Santa Clara University Through social networking, commerce, or political activism, many internet users engage in a host of mediated communities and social networks. To date, little attention has been paid to how cultural context shapes differentiated use of IT both within and beyond national borders. This session takes on this challenge by examining how new media practices diverge or converge in different cultural settings both in the United States and internationally. Papers will explore differences and similarities between how different cultural groups use mediated communication to initiate, sustain, or strengthen different forms of community and/or social networks. Session #2: Sociology of Communications and IT Organizer: Keith N. Hampton, University of Pennsylvania Open session on any topic related to the study of the sociology of communications, media, or information and communication technologies. Hi all I am researching on gender differences on internet use pattern, knowledge, purpose of internet use. It is a case study of University of Zambia, Zambia. The data was collected(using structured questionnaire) in last autumn among 300 students (from the internet cafe within University premise). Could someone help me identifying some of the theoretical or conceptual aspect of this kind of study. Web 2.0 Studies // Critical Internet Theory Geert Lovink Research Methodologies Workshop December 15th and 16th, 2008 School of Culture and Communication University of Melbourne The School of Culture and Communication at the University of Melbourne is seeking applications from researchers who wish to take part in a two day methodologies workshop with Professor Geert Lovink (Director, Institute of Network Culture, Amsterdam). Participation is free but places are limited and will be restricted to participants who are engaged in research relating to the theme of Web 2.0 studies and critical Internet theory. Participants will be chosen based on a competitive application process and priority will be given to postgraduates and early career researchers. The workshop will include a discussion of the work of Geert Lovink and presentations from successful applicants. Workshop Theme This two-day intensive workshop will focus on critical methodologies for studying Web 2.0. In relation to the contemporary Internet, there is an obvious need to move beyond cultural studies approaches to fandom, where active consumption is simply recast as participatory culture without any assessment of the economic and technological forces driving user-generated content. Rather than relying on the Jenkins-style models of convergence and the notion of collective intelligence, this workshop will encourage participants to consider the alternative possibilities and theoretical problems facing a materialist understanding of network culture. For instance, to what extent can software studies move from engineering issues and technologically-focused specifications to outline a broader analytics of power? What sort of creative concepts are available for understanding the everyday practices of blogging? How can organized networks transform their dependence on free labor to reach greater economic sustainability? While the theme is framed in part by Geert Lovink's ongoing theoretical work, this workshop also allows for the opportunity to discuss some of the more general difficulties facing Internet research, including questions of scale, speed and temporality, theories of technology, debates around networked politics and modes of collaboration. Some key topics: - organized networks - theories of blogging - recent web 2.0 literature (Bruns, Zittrain, Shirky) - software studies and protocol (Fuller, Galloway) - distributed aesthetics - free labor and collaboration The ARC Cultural Research Network has agreed to fund 3 stipends of up to $750 to support travel and accommodation costs of participants from outside Melbourne. He holds a PhD from the University of Melbourne and in 2003 was based at the Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies, University of Queensland. In 2004, Lovink was appointed as Research Professor at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam and Associate Professor at University of Amsterdam. He is the founder of Internet projects such as nettime and fibreculture. His recent book titles are Dark Fiber (2002), Uncanny Networks (2002) and My First Recession (2003). In 2005-06 he was a fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg Berlin Institute for Advanced Study where he finished his third volume on critical Internet culture, Zero Comments (2007). Colleagues/ A Most Interesting Discovery This Saturday ... /Gerry Hull D, Pettifer SR, Kell DB (2008) Defrosting the Digital Library: Bibliographic Tools for the Next Generation Web. PLoS Comput Biol 4(10): e1000204. Many scientists now manage the bulk of their bibliographic information electronically, thereby organizing their publications and citation material from digital libraries. However, a library has been described as "thought in cold storage," and unfortunately many digital libraries can be cold, impersonal, isolated, and inaccessible places. In this Review, we discuss the current chilly state of digital libraries for the computational biologist, including PubMed, IEEE Xplore, the ACM digital library, ISI Web of Knowledge, Scopus, Citeseer, arXiv, DBLP, and Google Scholar. We illustrate the current process of using these libraries with a typical workflow, and highlight problems with managing data and metadata using URIs. We then examine a range of new applications such as Zotero, Mendeley, Mekentosj Papers, MyNCBI, CiteULike, Connotea, and HubMed that exploit the Web to make these digital libraries more personal, sociable, integrated, and accessible places. We conclude with how these applications may begin to help achieve a digital defrost, and discuss some of the issues that will help or hinder this in terms of making libraries on the Web warmer places in the future, becoming resources that are considerably more useful to both humans and machines.
