Glyndwr University (formerly NEWI), Wrexham, North Wales http://www.ita09.org The third in a series of biennial international conferences on Internet Technologies and Applications (ITA 09), will be held in Wrexham, North East Wales, UK from Tuesday 8th to Friday 11th September 2009. The conference will draw together researchers and developers from academia and industry across all fields of Internet computing and engineering. Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings. In addition to a full technical programme, including keynote presentations, papers, posters, tutorials and special sessions, the social itinerary will include a visit to the historic English city of Chester and a mediaeval Welsh banquet at Ruthin Castle. ICT and social cohesion

Dear Colleagues, Two months ago I started my PhD research on Internet and social cohesion. The main focus of my research will be on how online and offline relations relate to each other and on how the use of Internet can contribute to feelings of loneliness or connectedness (in different contexts). My methods will be both quantitative and qualitative and probably some network-analysis. At this moment my main purpose is to get an overview of most (recent) research that has been done on this subject and to find relevant questions that still remain. Furthermore I would like to get in touch with other social researchers who are working on this. Finally, though I am already familiar with the classics, I would really appreciate suggestions on literature about Internet and social relations/cohesion. Hello All, I just wanted to comment on this thread that I liked the site Pearse mentioned. By way of comment by a nontechical person could I offer this cut-pasted definition: "Virtual Reality: The term 'Virtual Reality' is used in a variety of ways but its original meaning refers to immersive virtual reality systems. In this sense, 'Virtual Reality' is a high-end user interface that involves real time 3D simulations and interactions through position and motion tracking, stereo audio and video, touch and force feedback techniques. The user's personal viewpoint is completely immersed in the virtual world. Virtual Reality is more than a traditional medium since it introduces a new way of interacting with multimedia information." This is from a site by the Australian Government's Communications and Media Authority and which I happened on more or less by chance. url http://www.acma.gov.au/WEB/STANDARD..PC/pc=PC_1498 FWIW I would quarrel with "The user's viewpoint is completely immersed in the virtual world" but the I suppose this depends on one's definition of viewpoint. to all those who have posted their tips, ideas, and experiences with having your students work with wikipedia ... thank you! within 24 hours, i feel much more prepared for the assignment i'll be giving next week. thanks. in particular, i am still looking for any examples of having students work on THEIR OWN UNIVERSITY/COLLEGE wikipedia page. one student in jason mittell's class ( see http://justtv.wordpress.com/2007/03/16/wiki-lessons/ ), who along with jason was able to construct a wikipedia page for Middlebury College hockey team, seems closest to what i'm looking for. again, thanks for all the ideas and i hope to share some success (or not so) stories in the near future. david silver http://silverinsf.blogspot.com

Children, ICT and ethics

Hello! I am working with a research project on small children (pre school preferably), ICT and ethics. I have so far had very little luck in finding papers and books addressing that issue. Some of the text books on ethics and ICT/computer/Internet/cyberspace deals with abuse of children through pornography, but my focus is children's own use of ICT (and not just Internet), so that topic is only marginally interesting. Does anyone have tips on such literature, or where I could search for it? Searching various databases in Scandinavian languages gave very little, so this may indicate that very little research and reflection done. I have also searched on the archive on this mailing list, and found just a few interesting mails, that regrettably was so old that links to papers where outdated. What's "Lost" in the Google age of Research?

Good morning, For an upcoming paper at an Institute of General Semantics conference, I would be grateful to hear from anyone on this list of your experiences, feelings, or opinions on what, if anything, you've "lost" in this age when we can find answers and information so quickly and easily by going to Google (or to a lesser degree Wikipedia.) I am not focusing on the traditional issues or concerns like information quality, accuracy, comprehensiveness, etc., but more subtle matters, eg, if you have noticed a loss in areas like: * No more unanswered "burning questions"/less mystery in life/less wonder * Loss of what had traditionally been enjoyed/appreciated in a longer, slower research journey and process: eg fewer serendipitous discoveries? Less reflective reading with internal questions and analysis? More going on "Automatic" and less use of your own thinking and less mindfulness, etc? (Feel free to let me know too if you found there really are no losses at all from the Google research age, and that it is really primarily all to the researcher's benefit) Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences.
