CBC: Ryerson-Facebook-Study-Group-Student Won't Be Expelled

Ryerson University's Faculty Appeals Committee announced the decision to spare Chris Avenir on Tuesday afternoon, a week after his expulsion hearing. The 18-year-old will be required to take a course on academic misconduct and will have a note on his transcript saying he was disciplined, said Nora Loreto, president of the Ryerson Students Union. Avenir will also get a zero on one of his assignments, worth 10 per cent of his course grade, Loreto said. " Avenir's lawyer said Tuesday that Avenir has not yet decided if he will appeal the decision. "It's a finding he's not at all comfortable with. He doesn't believe that it's fair or appropriate," lawyer John Adair said. Hello Everybody, --------------------------------------------------- 2nd Call for papers for ‘Placing Mobile Communications’ A stream for the Australian & New Zealand Communication Association (ANZCA) conference 2008 http://anzca08.massey.ac.nz/ Convenors/editors: Clare Lloyd, Scott Rickard, and Gerard Goggin. Papers submitted by April 14 will still be refereed, (however papers submitted by April 14 will not have a 'revise and resubmit' option). Abstracts (up to 300 words) will also be accepted for the non-refereed stream if submitted by 9 June 2008. To have an abstract considered for the special issue of Australian Journal of Communication, please submit this to the convenors (Lloyd, Rickard, & Goggin) by 9 June 2008. Please see full submission details below. --------------------------------------------------- Call it a mobile, cell phone, or keitai; when an incoming call is heard, both power and place concerns arise. Mobile telephony adoption and usage is about power and place. The power of the mobile is increasing as it integrates with other everyday technologies, objects, and across media platforms. Currently there is significant emerging work on mobiles in various disciplines in Australia and New Zealand, as part of a vibrant international reckoning of mobiles and online technologies. In this light, the aim of the Placing Mobile Communication stream, and associated special issue of the Australian Journal of Communication, is to bring together researchers undertaking work on mobiles, with the particular aim of offering an opportunity to present and reflect upon Australian and New Zealand work in progress. We also wish to encourage discussion on where mobiles fit into media and communications traditions, and also on how local work fits into, and reconfigures, various contexts (regional, international, subcultural, national). Abstracts that examine the subject area from different theoretical and methodological approaches are welcomed. Topics will include collaboration support (such as natural language processing, Web, and Internet technologies), social psychologicalscientific analyses of intercultural interaction, and case studies that increase mutual understanding in our multicultural world. Submissions will be considered for papers, panels, demonstrations, and posters. The workshop will feature several prominent invited speakers (to be announced). Papers Papers are solicited on any aspect of intercultural communication and collaboration. Papers can describe studies of intercultural communication and collaboration or present new technologies to assess and support intercultural interaction. Long papers will be published in the ACM Digital Library. Full papers should be no longer than 10 pages. Papers should be formatted according to the ACM SIGCHI template and submitted in PDF format. All full papers will be evaluated using a double-blind review process. The Journal of Information Technologies and International Development (ITID) invites submissions for a special issue titled ICT goes to work: Skills and economic opportunities for marginalized groups. Coward and Maria Garrido (Center for Information & Society, ICT and Development Group, University of Washington) and Akthar Badshah (Community Affairs, Microsoft Corporation) A fundamental premise of ICT and international development is that people equipped with basic ICT skills should be more employable than those without these skills, and in turn have access to increased economic opportunities. Many nongovernmental organizations, telecenters in particular, state that improving the economic livelihood of their communities is one of their most important missions. Many training programs from donor and public-supported to privately operated, have been built with the express purpose of providing the people who come into the centers with the basic skills they need to be hired by a local company, obtain a better-paying job, or start a microenterprise. This special issue on ICT goes to work: Skills and economic opportunities for marginalized groups invites papers that address this topic with novel, theoretically grounded, and methodologically sound research. We will also accept a limited number of practitioner submissions. Papers may address the following questions, for example: * To what extent does having basic ICT skills affect an individual's employment prospects (e.g., quantitative analyses of income differentials, numbers and types of jobs that are available)? * Have basic ICT skills positively affected microenterprise creation? * How does gaining ICT skills affect employability compared with gaining other types of skills (e.g., learning English, learning how to search for jobs)? * What are the approaches and outcomes of different training programs? * What government policies and other factors influence employability? This special issue is primarily concerned with basic ICT skills (e.g., computer fundamentals, productivity applications, employment sector specific applications) and programs targeting marginalized populations, not with the advanced engineering skills needed for employment in, for instance, the IT export service sector. The topic of this ITID special issue is inherently multidisciplinary. The editors welcome a diverse pool of submissions from fields such as economics, development communications, education, rural sociology, engineering, and public policy. Edited by veteran AOIR members Caroline Haythornthwaite and me, but written by YOU. The articles in this issue are based on papers presented to the last AOIR conference. The Table of Contents is below, and the editors' intro talks about how the papers got to land between the covers. In addition to the quality, we're especially pleased about the diversity. As you can tell a paper from its title, you'll see a variety of topics, methods, disciplines and nationalities. Just as a teaser -- and this time of the year I do think of the Holy Land -- the first article tells about how Arab Palestinian-Israeli young men give their young women friends mobile phones, but use a number of means to ensure that these women use the phones to talk only to them. The main purpose of Web_site Histories is to place the new and emerging field of Web History on the research agenda and to map the field of historical website studies. Organizer: The Centre for Internet Research, University of Aarhus, Denmark. The conference is associated the AoIR 9.0 conference "Rethinking Communities, Rethinking Place" in Copenhagen (http://conferences.aoir.org ) Confirmed keynote speakers: Kirsten Foot, Associate Professor, University of Washington Steven Schneider, Professor, State University of New York Title: Object-Oriented Web Historiography. Abstract: Foot & Schneider will present a keynote address that focuses on their proposal of an “object-oriented” approach to researching and writing Web history. They will consider the various meanings of object entailed within the notion of object-oriented Web historiography in order to advance both the theoretical foundation and methodological rigor of developmental analyses of Web artifacts in their hyperlinked contexts. Developmental analyses of any aspect of the Web, whether engaged in contemporaneously or retrospectively, entail dynamics within and between the (co)producers of Web artifacts, production practices and techniques, and Web artifacts themselves. These dynamics make it difficult but very important for scholars to identify and situate their object(s) of analysis historically and theoretically. The main purpose of Web_site Histories is to place the new and emerging field of Web History on the research agenda and to map the field of historical website studies. The focus on the Web can be seen as a specialization within the larger field of Internet History, but with another subset of questions and challenges. The underscore in the title reflects the uncertainty and variability of the object of study – are we talking about the Web in general, Web Spheres, individual websites, or web pages? The conference welcomes papers on any of these approaches or any other theme, topic or idea connected to the theories, methods or analysis of Web History. Theoretical approaches could be discussions of the object of study or reflections on doing historical research on this particular subject. Methodological approaches may include abstract or more specific considerations of the range of applicable methods, both old and new, to Web History. Finally, the analytical approach welcomes contributions exploring the practical hazards and possibilities of this special kind of empirical material, as well as papers on concrete empirical studies. Papers are also welcome on a wide array of historically-grounded themes. The topics below are examples of the kinds of issues paper presenters are invited to address — but are not intended to limit topics suitable for paper submissions: · General as well as more specific histories of the development of the Web, focusing on, for instance, technology, graphic design, culture etc. · The history of the Web as a subset of the history of the Internet, with emphasis on, for instance, the development of hardware, software and protocols · The organizational architecture of the Web in a global, national, transnational or local perspective · Defining moments and events on the Web, either in terms of how the Web was conceived and built, or in terms of how it is or was perceived and used · Demographical, social, cultural, or other factors influencing Web use and uptake · Political, economic, institutional or personal histories of the Web · The growing popularity of social networking sites in a historical perspective · Interactivity, genre and media discussions in relation to the Web · The histories of expectations in pre-web time meeting the reality of the Web · Source availability and validity – the archiving of the Web · The history of the Web in the larger framework of media history Please send abstracts of no more than 300 words by April 15th 2008 (further instructions at http://www.cfi.au.dk/en/wsh08) After a process of double-blind peer review, authors will be notified of accepted papers by May 15th. Full papers will be due by August 31st 2008. Please note that there is a maximum of 30 participants, and priority will be given to paper presenters. Paper presentations will consist of short presentations with opponents/discussants and roundtable-style discussions. Presenters are therefore also expected to act as opponents/discussants. Participation in the conference is free, and coffee and lunch is included (yes, there is such a thing as a free lunch). Following the conference, papers will be considered for inclusion in an edited volume on Web Histories. The conference takes place at the University of Aarhus, two days before the start of the AoIR 9.0 conference in Copenhagen (http://conferences.aoir.org ).
