It is a community event, which is also open to the public and to researchers. This year's conference will be held from July 17-19, 2008 in Alexandria, Egypt at the new Library of Alexandria (Bibliotheca Alexandrina). We explicitly invite you to discuss your local Wikimedia project's community. Free Knowledge : Open access to information; ways to gather and distribute free knowledge, usage of the Wikimedia projects in education, journalism, research; ways to improve content quality and usability; copyright laws and other legal areas that interfere with Wikimedia projects. Free Content in the Middle-East/Africa. Technical infrastructure : Issues related to MediaWiki development and extensions; Wikimedia's technical infrastructure; new ideas for development (including case studies from other wikis or similar projects). Scientific track : Papers about massively collaborative work, open and free content creation, community dynamics, the social or economic aspects of the Wikimedia projects, and other topics related to Wikimedia projects. Papers submitted to the scientific track will be peer reviewed by a reviewing committee regarding their novelty, rigour, and estimated impact, and accepted or rejected based on these reviews. The papers will be published in proceedings afterwards, and depending on the number and the quality of the submissions, a journal special issue may be pursued. Scientific track papers must be in English, and must not exceed 7,500 words (or 15 pages LNCS). I'll add my little bit into the IRB discussion. I've served on University IRBs at two institutions. Perhaps they were good ones, but there wasn't much "making stuff up" - but there was, and is, a lot of discussion of "how do we deal with all these new kinds of research." I can say that at both, I was the only one familiar with online research methods, technology, etc.; and thus was able to possibly prevent some of the more extreme reactions (say comparing chat rooms with focus groups). I was also able to introduce the AoIR guide to ethical research to them, which they eagerly accepted as an appropriate guide for online research. So if your University IRB is having a hard time understanding what you do, perhaps you can help them - point them to our ethics statement, perhaps even volunteer to serve; it may not help your particular current project, but you might help future online research at your institution. Also, the Feds do seem to make up new rules along the way. Our whole IRB board was surprised recently to learn that asking about smoking is now considered a sensitive subject that requires full IRB review even on an anonymous survey - and that's straight from a Federal rule (45 CFR 46, Subpart C). Hey Monica, There has just been some controversy in Germany regarding StudiVZ, the German version of Facebook. StudiVZ has just asked users to consent to saving their data (and according to the owner over 90% did) - the arguments were the benefits of personalized commercials (yeah..) and the possibility of providing police with data for their inquiries. Strangely I read and heard this argument in connection with exposing users that openly showed themselves consuming grass much more than in connection with anti-semitism/racism etc.. One of the big weekly magazines (Spiegel) titled an interview with StudiVZ-manager Riecke "Gott sei Dank dürfen wir Kiffer-Fotos jetzt den Behörden geben" (Thank God we can give Smoker-Pictures to the Police now), but changed the title to a more neutral one later. I couldnt find any rules specifically relating to drug use, it seems they cover that all under one data-saving umbrella. Johanna

Thanks, Dr. Toews! Very interesting points all around. I think I was mixing together ideas on hypertexts in the fictional sense (e.g. Mark Amerika's machines,etc.) and the SL avatars. It's just that avatars and markup machines are becoming very pervasive (advertising, etc.) as you also note, and there are lots of new angles to be considered (as you also note). They are still texts (and I suppose in at least two senses of text) but I can now see the researching difficulties you talk about. Maybe one of the main points, for me at least, is the *potential* interaction of any two (or more) objects in relatively close proximity. Thanks to all!
