CALL FOR AWARD APPLICATIONS James W. Carey Media Research Award 2008 Sponsored by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research http://www.cccsir.org/ The Carl Couch Center invites self-nominations for works to be considered for its annual James W. Carey Media Research Award. The Couch Center welcomes works on topics that have been central to Carey's scholarship. Among others, submissions might focus on technology, time, space and communications, the nature of public life, the relation between journalism and popular culture. Applications will be evaluated based on the quality of (1) mastery of Carey’s approaches and concepts, (2) originality, (3) organization, (4) presentation, and (5) advancement of knowledge. Evaluation will be administered by a Review Committee of six: Prof. Stuart Adam, Poynter Institute for Media Studies Prof. Theodore L. Glasser, Stanford University Prof. John Pauly, Marquette University Prof. Jeff Pooley, Muhlenberg College Prof. Linda Steiner, University of Maryland Prof. Lance Strate, Fordham University Both single and multiple authored works will be accepted. All submissions must be works that have been published/presented or have been accepted for publication or presentation—that is, works that have been accepted for publication in a book or journal, or have been accepted for presentation at a competitive academic conference. To be considered for the 2008 award, works should be published or presented in 2007. Those interested please submit a copy of their works electronically to Mark D. Johns, executive director of CCCSIR, at mjohns(a)luther.edu in plain text, Microsoft Word, or Corel WordPerfect format. If the work submitted is a paper, a 100-word abstract needs to be included. Paper length is limited to 30 pages plus references. If a book is submitted, a copy of the table of contents and one chapter are sufficient. The application deadline is *extended* to April 15, 2008. Notification of award application will be sent out by June 15. The Award winner will receive the Carey Award plaque to be presented at the winner’s choice of the 2008 annual convention of the International Communication Association (ICA), Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC), or National Communication Association (NCA). Hi everyone, I am doing my Master's in Development and International Cooperation at the University of Jyvaskyla Finland. I am researching on internet use at University of Zambia. I would like to know if there is any workshop, seminars or similar events taking place in Norway especially in Bergen. I would like to participate in such activities. I would be great if I can meet some researchers in Bergen working in ICT sector in the third week of April. CALL FOR AWARD APPLICATIONS Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award 2008 Sponsored by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research http://www.cccsir.org/ The Carl Couch Center issues an annual call for student-authored papers to be considered for Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award. The Couch Center welcomes both theoretical and empirical papers that (1) apply symbolic interactionist approaches to Internet studies, (2) demonstrate interactive relationships between social interaction and communication technologies as advocated by Couch, and/or (3) develop symbolic interactionist concepts in new directions. Papers will be evaluated based on the quality of (1) mastery of Symbolic Interactionist approaches and concepts and Couch’s theses, (2) originality, (3) organization, (4) presentation, and (5) advancement of knowledge. Evaluation will be administered by a Review Committee of four: Dr. Mark D. Johns, Luther College, Decorah, Iowa Dr. Lori Kendall, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Dr. Annette Markham, University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee Dr. Dennis Waskul, Minnesota State University, Mankato Competition is open to graduate or undergraduate students of all disciplines. Works that are published or accepted for publication are not eligible for award consideration. Entries should not exceed 30 pages (approximately 7500 words) in length, including references and appendices. Limit of one entry per student per year. The top three papers will receive Couch Awards to be presented at the 2008 meeting of the Association of Internet Researchers (aoir.org) at the IT University of Copenhagen, Denmark. The top paper will be awarded a certificate and a cash prize of $500 US, runner up will receive a certificate and a cash prize of $300 US, and a third paper will receive a certificate and a cash prize of $100 US. All three authors will be invited to present their work at a session of the AoIR conference, October 15-19, 2008 in Copenhagen. Hi there, I am on the AOIR list and I have developed a web based project which is intended to illustrate my PhD thesis and I'd really like to have AOIR members take a look at it: CARRIER HOTELS (work in progress) is a webproject which illustrates internet infrastructure focusing specially on connection points as a locus of control. This media work consists of a topographical image of North America upon which is situated images of major peering points called Carrier Hotels. Each Carrier Hotel is seen as a graphic of the exterior of the actual real estate. For example, a view of the front of the building at 151 Front Street Toronto, or an image of the tower at 1 Wilshire in Los Angeles. The interactivity so far, consists of clicking to see which facilities contained US based secret NSA (National Security Agency) eavesdropping rooms and which peering point facilities are owned by the Carlyle Group (CRG West), in an overall map of approximately 35 premiere Carrier Hotels located in major urban North American centres. Further developments are under consideration, such as initiating a trace route to view the path one's IP activities such as email, data searches or video viewing, takes through these peering facilities.
