EJC/REC: Call for Papers The Internet in China Edited by: Randy Kluver, Texas A & M University, rkluver(a)tamu.edu Teresa M. Harrison, University at Albany, harrison(a)albany.edu China's population of Internet users has now increased to 221 million, matching the US for the largest number of users online in the world. The Internet is having revolutionary effects on Chinese society, allowing greater openness to expression, presenting challenges to the Chinese government to control information, and posing the potential to improve the quality of life for Chinese citizens. While the Internet may be unlikely to "democratize" China, it is unquestionably modernizing Chinese culture and society, while providing radically new opportunities for Chinese citizens. This special issue seeks to publish the best research addressing the impact of Internet use and new media technologies on China's culture and society. We invite submissions from scholars documenting the scope and depth of these changes in an effort to better understand the Chinese information technology revolution and its consequences. We also seek submissions that consider these effects within the context of social theory and cultural criticism. Topics may include, but are not limited to: * How the Internet is used in China to find, present, and discuss information about the world * Chinese perceptions and attitudes about the Internet, the Web and new media * The demographics of Internet adoption * Internet and political communication in China * Blogging, social networking, wikis, and other Web 2.0 phenomena in China * Mobile, location-based services, and other emerging technologies in China * Cross-cultural comparisons * Cross-media use comparisons * The history of the Internet in China Inquiries to either editor about possible topics are welcome. Deadline for completed manuscripts is Monday, July 7, 2008. Call for Papers/Participation Please join us in a workshop on learning and research in Second Life(R) on October 16, 2008 in Copenhagen at Internet Research 9.0 (http://conferences.aoir.org/ ) Deadline June 15th (Individual extensions may be given). Second Life is a 3d virtual environment created by Linden Lab (R) which has captured the attention of researchers and teachers from around the world from a variety of disciplines. This workshop aims to improve the understanding of Second Life as a Learning and Research environment. It will bring 35 researchers together to collaborate, discuss and workshop diverse topics related to research and learning in Second Life. We will pursue a full-day schedule in which participants will discuss their work and interests on four different topics: learning in Second Life, integrated learning, the contributions of research to the community and ethical research methods. How can we better enable learning in this sphere? How can we better enable research? Our honored keynote will be Pathfinder Linden Researchers are requested to submit papers and short biography to slworkshop08(a)gmail.com , which will be selected and distributed amongst participants before the workshop. First invitations will be offered to those who provide full papers for consideration. These papers have two purposes: first is to provide a common platform for understanding our research and teaching and second submitted papers may be considered for publication in an edited volume being produced in relation to the workshop, or possibly in peer reviewed publication derived from the workshop (these are currently under discussion). Subsequent invitations will be made based upon research/teaching statement and biography with priority given to people submitting full papers. If you are interested in participating, please send an email containing your information to slworkshop08(a)gmail.com. Decisions will be made by August 1st, barring incident. There is a limit of 35 participants at the physical meeting; the event will be simulcast into Second Life which will be organized by Jason Nolan. We welcome professionals, faculty and graduate students to participate. These metaphors are like vestigial body organs. All new ideas have to be expressed using the terminology of the old idea. They linger carrying old ideas into new turf. We still "dial" the phone even if there have not been dials on phones for 30 years. Documents are stored in "filing cabinets" - even in a paperless office. The words linger - long after their original utility is passed. I have a theory that each new technology becomes the metaphor for ourselves. Freud's concept of "projection" arose in close proximity to the time he saw his first magic lantern show. In the 50's the mind was described as a giant computer In the 90's the mind was described as a giant network. Minsky - the Community of Mind. Our concept of ourselves is driven by the metaphors that are available from our external world. I'd love to see your web metaphor list. Has the student received IRB or similar type of institution approval to conduct a research study of this nature? I am surprised that an academic adviser would approve a study that has the potential to put the life of a student and/or research subjects in danger, as well as their own due to student relationship issues. I also found myself wondering whether the adviser has counseled the student to seek legal advice about doing a study that has the potential to not only endanger lives but also compromise the well-being of institutions, including those of members and other shareholder whose interests could also be compromised as part of the research process. If the student has institution approval to conduct the study, Ingbert Floyd and others have given sound advice on how to cloak the identity of the student and research subjects. I would, though, still proceed with caution keeping in mind that all code can eventually be cracked and identities traced by those who have the know-how and are intent on uncovering the identities of those perceived to be security threats to private and/or public interests.
