IFIP 8.2 Working Conference: Early Registration closes this weekend

We invite you to join us in Toronto this August for the 2008 IFIP Working Group 8.2 Conference on IT in the Service Economy. The conference will be held at the Ted Rogers School of Management, Ryerson University, from August 10-13, immediately before the AMCIS conference. Early registration for the conference closes this weekend (June 15). Conference keynote speakers are Jim Spohrer (IBM), Langdon Winner (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) and Dan Robey (Georgia State University). mobile tech in the classroom and beyond...syllabus ideas pls!

Hi everyone, I am putting together a syllabus on technology and work. I'm hoping to have student problematize their use of technology by conceiving of their roles as students as "workers" in a sense. I would like them to make use of technology in the course but I would also like them to reflect upon this use. One of the ways I hope to do this is to turn the tables on them, in a sense, by showing how their use of technologies (especially mobile technologies) makes them "always on" as individuals. This, hopefully, will also show the impact of them emailing me! Has anyone done anything like this? I'm thinking of using Twitter for this, or perhaps some other sms-based system. And please! A "New" Type of Wiki to Advance the Common Good

Hello,   The Meyer Memorial Trust  in Portland, OR has taken advantage of the fact that the Portland area is a computer geek nexus and has worked to help create connec+ipedia – http://connectipedia.org - which is “a shared learning community for anyone interested in advancing the knowledge and efforts of those working for the common good.” It is like a wiki because all members can contribute to the content, but it goes beyond a wiki by providing a dynamic and revolutionary way to create connections toward advancing the “common good.”   The (open-source) software used to create it – Wagn – is describe on the Wagn website - http://wagn.org/wagn/Wagn.org - as “a wiki you query, an on-the-fly community database, a templating system, an application platform, and a playground .... all in one.”   This resource has a tremendous amount of potential – but that potential can only be realized by the degree that people working toward the common good use it. Derek, have you tried Atlas TI? I have just started tinkering with it on the advice of a colleague who's used it pretty happily for analyzing conversations. I personally am working on blog comment threads with it. So far it's been a little frustrating -- there's some massaging of text files needed to get the comment threads into the program, and then tagging is a little difficult -- but I think it's more because I am not well-practiced with the software yet. All in all it seems to have a hugely rich ability to create tags and themes, and to display these in a variety of ways. The big benefit of Atlas TI is that once you've run out your 30-day trial period, a grad student license for the software is only something like $100. Not sure what it runs for professors, but for me, this is a pretty big help. I'd be interested to hear from anyone else who's used Atlas TI as well. Gus
