On the 28th and 29th October 2008 the European University Institute will host in Florence the first edition of "The future of..." Conference on Law & Technology, organized by the InfoSoc Working Group in conjunction with the Law department of the European University Institute. Such conference aims to be an original and ground-breaking symposium, attracting quality papers dealing with prospective studies and analyzes of legal developments and transformations expected in the future. Taking into account the present technological trends affecting society, the "Future of…" Conference challenges scholars to think and foresee the main problems and changes that Law will face and suffer in the upcoming future of ambient technologies, ubiquitous and pervasive computing, web 3.0, mixed realities (convergence between virtual and physical domains), autonomous software agents, artificial intelligence and many other features and elements. The conference thus welcomes the contribution of scholars and researchers from anywhere in the world, whose interests and research are directed towards the assessment of the evolving relationship that might develop between law and technology. In particular, the contributions shall relate to the interplay of law and technology and the impact it may have on the future of the information society, with strong focus on the complementary and/or conflictual nature of technology, as it may be employed to enforce certain legal provisons, or, alternatively, to bypass the law to eventually replace the legal regime by technological means. It provides an opportunity for early and mid career internet researchers to discuss and improve academic writing skills in a peer support environment and identify suitable publication outlets. The workshop will be a forum to share experiences and tips and tricks on how to interact with editors and deal with review reports. The Centre for Digital Citizenship at the University of Leeds has two full-fee scholarships with start date September 2008. The CdC in the Institute of Communications Studies is co-directed by Professor Stephen Coleman and Professor Ann Macintosh. Its research focuses on public communication in an era of digital media, bringing together work on e-democracy, participation and deliberation, new media and political efficacy. The Centre's unique task is to consolidate research in both social scientific and technological domains, seeking to translate and integrate concepts, methods and styles that have been traditionally isolated within disciplinary silos. Building on the reputation of the Institute of Communications Studies as a forerunner in the social and political study of modern communication and technology, the Centre conducts, facilitates and promotes collaborative interdisciplinary research. As part of the University's ongoing strategic commitment to the Centre for Digital Citizenship, we have two PhD full-fee scholarships. These scholarships present an exciting opportunity for committed and enthusiastic researchers with an interest in the Internet as a space for political and civic participation. Applications are invited from suitable candidates for PhD scholarships related to Digital Citizenship and eParticipation with particular emphasis on the use of Web2.0 based technologies and digital storytelling.
