Intellectual Property Manager Centre for Next Generation Localisation (CNGL) Dublin City University, Dublin, Ireland http://www.cngl.ie/ CNGL is a DCU-led Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) funded Centre for Science Engineering and Technology (Directed by Prof. Josef van Genabith). CNGL conducts research on language technologies (machine translation, speech recognition/synthesis), digital content management technologies (adaptive hypermedia, IE/IR), their application in localisation workflows, and language technology-focused software engineering. CNGL is a €30M collaborative research centre that involves collaboration between DCU, TCD, UCD, UL and industrial partners who include world leaders in their respective fields. Invent DCU is the commercialisation gateway for Dublin City University (DCU). Invent manages the protection and commercialisation of intellectual property for DCU through technology transfer, licensing and the creation of spin-out companies. We wish to recruit an Intellectual Property Manager on a fixed term contract basis with primary responsibility for managing the intellectual property generated in the Centre for Next Generation Localisation (CNGL). Duties and Responsibilities: The IP Manager will report to the CEO of Invent. He/she will have primary responsibility for the identification, capture, protection and commercialisation of intellectual property arising from research activities within the CNGL and related interdisciplinary research areas involving computer science. He/she will also work with other Invent staff and CNGL partners to develop the full potential of IP through appropriate commercial and licensing mechanisms in accordance with the formal IP arrangements agreed between the partners. Requirements: The IP Manager is a key post within Invent and CNGL and the successful candidate will be expected to have the required breadth of education, relevant experience and self confidence to have an immediate impact in a leading computer science research centre by devising and implementing procedures and practices that enhance the identification, assessment and protection of intellectual property. The appointed person will have: A post-graduate qualification in computer science, computational linguistics, speech processing or a related discipline, (such as language technology, machine translation, speech, IR/IE, localisation), preferably to PhD level. An understanding and appreciation of the IP issues arising in the context of academic research and in particular computer software. Ideally, some experience of intellectual property management, including patenting, licensing and commercialisation gained in an industrial setting. Salary Scale: Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. New deadline = 31st July 2008 BT/EPSRC CASE Studentship "The life-course of public and private media assets" http://www.postgraduatestudentships.co.uk/node/3232 ISTR - Institute for Social and Technical Research University of Essex Subjects: Geography - Human | Information Sciences | Information Technology | Media and Communications | Sociology | Telecommunications The explosive growth of public media services such as youtube, flickr, Slide and the like together with the widespread penetration of domestic broadband are starting to cause significant challenges for telecommunications networks which were not designed with the instantaneous viral spread of multi-media content in mind. This studentship will develop ways of studying and conceptualising high bandwidth multi-media content usage that can take account of the 'flow' of media across geographically dispersed social networks through a range of hosting services such as facebook, youtube, Slide, blogs and the like. The student will be expected to carry out conceptual and empirical work applying (for example) theories of exchange and reciprocity to the emerging arena of the sharing of public (published/broadcast) and private (within closed groups) media content. Whilst the successful applicant will be based at the Technology and Social Change Research Centre (http://istr.essex.ac.uk/tasc/ - Colchester campus) they will also spend time with BT’s R&D teams (who are located at Adastral Park) gaining industrial experience and access to unique datasets and other resources. Although pursuing their own research agenda the student will be expected to work closely with and contribute to the research team and the programme in which they will be embedded. The studentship would suit a qualitative social scientist with an interest in technology mediated consumption and social behaviour. Applications are therefore invited from graduates with a first or upper second class degree in a demonstrably relevant discipline. The studentship covers fees, research expenses and the standard RCUK tax-free living allowance with an additional contribution from the industrial partner. Colleagues/ I am pleased to inform you of the availability of a corrected and revised version of my presentation delivered last week at the International Plagiarism Conference in Newcastle UK "Disruptive Scholarship: An Idea Whose Time Has Come | Re(Use) / Re(Mix) / Re(New)" ABSTRACT. Throughout history, humans have (re)used local resources to create not only buildings and fortifications, but monuments, roads, and a wide variety of other structures. For countless generations, artists, composers, and writers have freely incorporated elements from local and distant cultures to create new visual, musical, and textual forms. In The Web 2.0 World, the open (re)combination of multiple media has become commonplace in many venues, practices that Lawrence Lessig, founder of Creative Commons, and others, would characterize as emblematic of a 'Remix ' or 'Read/Write' culture. Indeed, from his point of view, the health, progress, and wealth creation of a culture is fundamentally tied to this participatory remix process In the recently-released Horizon Report 2008 - a joint publication of the New Media Consortium (NMC) and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI), six emerging information technologies and practices that are expected to significantly impact educational organizations are profiled: Grassroots Video, Collaborative Webs, Mobile Broadband, Data Mashups, Collaborative Intelligence, and Social Operating Systems. In this presentation, we will review the Read/Write Traditions of the Arts, Humanities, and Sciences; analyze key Past / Present / Future Participatory Technologies; and explore the potential of Web 2.0 for creating/fostering Disruptive Learning / Scholarship / Teaching in the 21st century.
