Dear all, There are a limited number of places remaining on the MSc in Cyberpsychology and the Certificate in Cyberpsychology programmes which will be starting in IADT, Ireland, this autumn. Both of these courses are part-time, and are designed to fit around full-time employment without the need to take any time off. Accommodations in Copenhagen

I thought I'd send my message to the list in case others have similar questions. Can the local folks in Copenhagen say more about the location of the hotels listed in terms of their proximity to the University (eg, how many minutes walk, ease of transit etc). When I try to get more information from the websites, it comes up in Danish. :) Also, the Copenhagen City Centre hostel is mentioned but on their website, they name two in English: Copenhagen Downtown and Copenhagen City. Which one is it? Again the main page is in English but the details seem to be only in Danish. Thanks. Rhiannon Bury

question about use of Facebook in classroom

Hello all- I'm teaching an "intro to advertising" class this fall and I was considering using Facebook in class to talk about targeted ads. A few weeks ago I was reading a discussion about the rather unpleasant weight loss ads that seem to pop up to anyone identifying as female on FB and I switched my profile to have an unspecified gender and made my age something like 99 years old to see what happened. What I want to do is have the students make notes for a couple weeks on what ads they were getting on FB and then have them replicate the same thing - change gender and age status and see what happens for the next couple weeks, then we'll compare the data in class to talk about what kinds of ads are targeted to who, etc. I am NOT requiring students to get a FB account for the class. Those who don't have one would collect the information provided by those who do and do some analysis. Also this is not research, it's a course exercise, so HSRB isn't a factor. But still, I wanted to run this concept by the people who deal with these kinds of exercises and have spent more time thinking about the ethics of this kind of thing than I or any of my colleagues. Paul, I wonder, did the students not mention Facebook as a place to do their class assignments because they didn't want to disturb their "real life" social networks? Would you ask them about how they happened to leave it out of the options? I'd like to know more. As OpenSocial (okay IF then if you like), takes off this will be even easier. On FB vs Ning. I had the students in our seminar vote on how and where to do assignments. They asked me for options at first so I supplied 3 but encouraged them to introduce others. My suggested options included: posting to delicious, oral book reports, and adding questions for class on a wiki. Someone suggested using Ning and I showed a site to the class. In the voting, still underway on Doodle, everyone has voted for using Ning. Facebook? It wasn't even mentioned. (I found that particularly interesting as I asked who of the class was on FB and everyone -- save a visiting Korean scholar -- raised their hands.)

Formality and importance of various communication media

Hello all, I am working on a project and would like to gauge how users of mainstream communication media rank or balance the formality of various tools. For example, I would like to know whether people think an email or letter is more formal. Or another way, would you call your boss or meet face to face? These types of questions, in a very broad sense, are what I want to investigate. I plan to eventually launch a study but need to find some background/prior research. Do you know of any previous studies like this or any writing on the subject? I think I have plenty of theoretical material, I am looking more for studies, data, and methods. Oooh very interesting indeed! Especially for raising awareness of the dangers with concepts of online privacy. If you want to make it even more random and interesting, why not have some characters of your own creation? You could make as many paper cards as you have students, and write down a couple pieces of information on each card (e.g. "32 year-old Chinese-American college graduate"; "21 year-old lesbian"; "male primary school teacher earning $xx,xxx a year"...). They draw a card at random, and have to make up whichever information isn't on the card as they sign up on FB (having to come up with realistic profiles). As a youngster (on FB), I'd be inspired by this exercise, and I know it wouldn't affect my own profile. Alternatively/additionally, some of the students could post wall items, notes, links and so on, whilst some other could stay silent. You could then compare the similar profile and see whether it's affected by the content? Do tell us how it goes! Bruno Masters student London, UK

I have to agree that using something so public as Facebook might be problematic for the students. There might be unintended consequences for their public persona that you may have difficulty predicting, i.e., what will arrive in their friends' newsfeeds if they change their gender? I also recall a similar (though not exactly the same) situation among some former colleagues in interactive advertising firms. One junior designer had been "requested" to put a beer-related application on his profile because the agency had created it and the beer company was its client. He refused but felt it did hurt him within the agency. He was not completely "on board" or a "team player" because he really didn't want to tell the world he didn't like beer. I have used Ning as well and recommend this as a more closed system, but this won't be as advertising-centric as the method you suggest. There is an interesting game Passive Multiplayer Online Game (PMOG) that creates a "mission" for people to surf through. There is one on online identity that has been used in courses (I have inferrd this from analyzing my own site stats).
