Re: [Air-L] Metaphors in Technology

The internet as a disease is missing--this one was very popular when the internet was first being utilized by general society. Also, the internet as connection and disconnection. And of course the internet as transportation and its variations. Sabryna Sabryna Cornish Assistant professor of journalism Department of communication Northern Illinois University >>> "Gordon Carlson" <gordycarlson(a)gmail.com> 06/28/08 2:23 PM >>> Hello all, Many of you have helped me compile a list of technology metaphors. Several asked to see the list. So here we go. The following is a list of metaphors related to technology and its use. The emphasis is clearly on digital technology but some others are in there as well. If you have additions to the list PLEASE do send them along, I would like to keep the list growing. If you have a dispute or other comment that should make for interesting conversation, as metaphorical as it might be on a mail list. Science Dissemination Using Open Access: A Compendium Of Selected Literature On Open Access
by McKiernan, Gerard [LIB] 03 Aug '08

Colleagues/ >>>Now Available<<< Science Dissemination Using Open Access: A Compendium Of Selected Literature On Open Access / Editors E. Canessa and M. Zennaro (ICTP-SDU, Italy). The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics. Science Dissemination Unit (SDU) / July 2008 / 207 pp. / ISBN 92-95003-40-3. /Gerry Open Access means aims to remove restrictions that exist on the access to articles and knowledge to the world-wide scholarly community, in particular to those in developing countries. Scientists in these countries still have difficulty in publishing their work due to the lack of access to the network, to their institutional economic difficulties or to the lack of awareness of available Open Access solutions. The visibility, usage and impact of researchers' own findings can increase with Open Access, as does their power to find, access and use the work of others. This book aims to guide the scientific community on the requirements of Open Access, and the plethora of low-cost solutions available. A compendium of selected literature on Open Access is presented to increase the awareness of the potential of open publishing in general. The book also aims to encourage decision makers in academia and research centers to adopt institutional and regional Open Access Journals and Archives to make their own scientific results public and fully searchable on the Internet. Conference on religion and media?
by Peter Fischer-Nielsen 03 Aug '08

03 Aug '08

Dear List Members, I am planning a trip to New York in January 2009 as part of my PhD project on church communication on the Internet. Do any of you know of upcoming media or Internet conferences in or around New York, preferably with religious communication as one focus? And: What "must see" places should I consider when I plan visits to media houses and other Internet distributors of religious stuff? Thank you for your advices! Academic BarCamp [Urbino, Italy - 11th Oct 2008]
by FG 03 Aug '08

03 Aug '08

Dear Colleagues, we are in the process of organising an Academic Barcamp in Italy entitled: Self observing social networks and the future of society The un-conference will be held at Faculty of Sociology in Urbino on the 11th of October 2008. *As soon as he was able to settle in and overcome the physical effects of Mexico City's altitude, Norbert Wiener began to work at the INC with Arturo Rosenblueth on the type of muscle tremor known as clonus. In the evening he would eat dinner with the interns at the hospital dining room, where the usual diners would address him as maestro. Aided by a Spanish grammar that he took with him everywhere, Wiener discovered that the term was utilized indiscriminately to refer to a professor, a carpenter, or bricklayer. He felt proud to be called maestro, since he scorned the pomposity of academia and the rivalry of vanities it contained *(Quintanilla 2002, p. 311). If you don't know what a BarCamp <http://barcamp.org/BarCamp> is you should probably read this page <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BarCamp> first. If you already know the meaning of BarCamp <http://barcamp.org/BarCamp> you are probably asking yourself if an Academic BarCamp<http://barcamp.org/BarCamp>is not an oxymora in itself. Adding the "academic" adjective to a BarCamp <http://barcamp.org/BarCamp>may seem quite strange at first but we have always been fascinated by paradoxes and intrinsic contradictions. We also love both informality and science. And we deeply believe this is not an oxymora neither a contradiction. That's why we decided to promote within "Festival dei Blog '08" <http://conversazionidalbasso.pbwiki.com/blogfest08> something never attempted before. A self-organized meeting of people from the academia and bloggers to talk about the impact of the Internet on society in the informal self-organized setting typical of a BarCamp <http://barcamp.org/BarCamp>. No call for papers, no abstracts committee, no review (blind or not), no selections at all. Wait, wait… I can hear your toughs… "No selection? How do you think to assure the quality of scheduled speeches without any selection?" We have a simple answer. We believe that BarCamp <http://barcamp.org/BarCamp> is not really attended by everyone. Just folks who really loves to share use to attend this kind of events. And since "love for sharing" is one of the most important attitude for a researcher... That's why we plan to gather the best Italian Internet researchers as well as some friends from all around the world. If you are interested in the impact of social media on society and you are a bright mind (we know you are :) ) this is the event for you! To register an interest in attending this conference, please visit: http://barcamp.org/AcaBarCamp If you are coming to Europe to attend IR 9.0 this is the perfect event companion as well as a good opportunity to visit Italy. Also, please feel free to circulate this notice to any of your colleagues who may be interested to attend. Best wishes, Fabio Giglietto Fabio Giglietto, PhD. Anti Counterfeiting Trade Agreement
by Barry Wellman 02 Aug '08

02 Aug '08

There's a basic article about possible border searches of laptops at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Counterfeiting_Trade_Agreement It's a plurilateral effort. Usual WP caveats apply I don't think that people's laptops (or Berries) will be routinely searched, given the volume of border traffic.* And if you're under surveillance, there will be ways to get at your stuff besides border searches. *Coming into the US from Canada this Wednesday at Queenston-Lewiston took 25 minutes, and the joy of watching swat teams and sniffer dogs. The other direction (US > Canada) took 1 minute, according to the broadcast information. I doubt that swats & dogs were used. Letters to Lara
by Derek McMillan 02 Aug '08

02 Aug '08

To collect new data for the "Letters to Lara" project, I have set up an email address, blog and youtube presence. letterstolara1(a)yahoo.com letterstolara.blogspot.com http://uk.youtube.com/user/letterstolara1 The youtube video was number 2 in the UK education charts for a while yesterday! The original project http://derekmcmillan.com/cover.htm made some use of the the internet but gathered most of its data from pupils at the school I worked at. This time the data from pupils can also be collected via Moodle. I think teachers may wish to use some other iconic computer game persona in place of Lara but may be hard-pressed to find one to rival the original and best!
