software to download yahoo group data?

Hi all, I've been running a few similar yahoo groups for about 8 years now. I'd like to download data from those groups so I can take a closer look at them. I can find programs to grab the messages and photos, but nothing that also grabs the moderator data -- when members joined and left, etc. Does anyone know how I can get that data other than copy/paste? I have both a Mac and a PC, so it doesn't matter what platform the software runs on. TIA, Tery Griffin

***Apologies for Cross-posting*** Call for Submissions: Information: Interactions and Impact (i³) Deadline Reminder: Friday 6th February 2009 i3 is concerned with the quality and effectiveness of the interaction between people and information and how this interaction can bring about change in individuals, organisations, communities and society. The conference will question the way people interact with the information and knowledge content of today's systems and services, and how this might ultimately affect the impact of that information on individuals, organisations and communities. We invite the submission of high quality papers that report original research or critically discuss underlying methodological issues associated with the main themes of the conference. Papers may reflect ongoing or completed research studies and should not have been previously published or be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. We would particularly welcome papers which address two or more of the following conference themes: • the quality and effectiveness of user/information interactions (e.g. information literacy); • patterns of information behaviour in different contexts; • impact of information or information services on people, organisations, communities and society (e.g. social, learning, cultural and economic outcomes of engagement with information); • more effective decision making. Submissions are invited for: • Full papers; (40 minutes duration: 35 minutes, 5 minutes for questions); • Short papers (15 minutes duration: questions at end of session); • Posters; and • Round table discussions (60-80 minutes duration). Authors who are accepted to give full papers at i3 are also invited to submit a full paper for publication in a special issue for the journal Libri. Contributors should submit abstracts of 1000 words for Full papers, and 300-500 words for Short Papers, Posters and Round Table Discussions. These should be submitted electronically by downloading the online submissions form, located at: http://www.i3conference2009.org.uk/call09/AbstractSubmissionForm.doc . This should then be emailed (as an attachment) to i3submissions(a)rgu.ac.uk . The conference language will be English. In Canada our countries budget just passed or will pass tomorrow. It includes stimulus spending on broadband for rural areas any thoughts on this? Can other nationals in other countries report you regions spending on Internet and of course the climate for research spending on Internet? out of luck re transcription?

We've never found a transcription program that will work with interviews. That's because you need to train the program for each voice, and while the interviewers are trainable [;-)], each respondent isn't. Hard enuf to get a resp. to hold still to be interviewed. We have had good luck with transcription software, for going from voice recording to interviews. Tracy, what did we use last? A Critical Case Study of the Usage of studiVZ, Facebook, and MySpace by Students in Salzburg in the Context of Electronic Surveillance / Fuchs, Christian. 2009. Salzburg / Vienna: Research Group UTI. ISBN 978-3-200-01428. 145 pp. /Gerry 674 students from Salzburg participated in the study that was conducted by the eTheory Research Group (University of Salzburg, ICT&S Center). 88.3% of the respondents use studiVZ, 39.5% Facebook, 15.9% MySpace, 9.0% Xing, 7.4% Lokalisten. Each of 61 other social networking sites (SNS) is used by less than 1%. [snip] 59.1% of the respondents see the maintenance of social contacts as the biggest advantage of SNS, 55.7% say that economic and political surveillance is the greatest risk. [snip] 81.8% of the respondents have little knowledge about concrete data surveillance in Europe (e.g. the Data Retention Directive or the Austrian Security Police Act). But 67.4% have a critical standpoint towards surveillance. 88.7% of the studiVZ users have good or very good knowledge about what happens with their data on the platform. The same is true for only 35.9% of Facebook users and 22.6% of MySpace users. [snip] The study recommends that citizens see commercial Internet platforms that store and evaluate personal data generally critically and that by establishing special consumer protection websites it could be documented in the public, which rights in dealing with personal data such platforms obtain by their terms of use and their privacy terms. Research on multiple CMC environments

Hi all, I'm looking for research on the interaction of different types of CMC - e.g. how chat, email, IM, social networking, virtual worlds, blogging, SMS, mobile etc. are used together as part of a communication environment by users. Most studies I've found concentrate on a single aspect; I'm looking for work on the use of two or more types of CMC by the same users. Thanks! Because they connect people and facilitate the exchange of information and web content, social media technologies not only provide a powerful new way to interact with one another, they also present exciting new pedagogical opportunities. This special issue seeks to examine the pedagogical applications of social media technologies, especially with regard to the communication classroom. Examples of best practices in social media adoption in all areas of communication education are welcome, as are case studies or empirical research analyzing the effectiveness and/or effects of incorporating social media technologies into the communication classroom. Research examining the role these technologies play in the social construction of a collective knowledge pool would also fit within the scope of this special issue. User Participation and the extension of Cultural Industries http://mtschaefer.net/media/uploads/docs/Schaefer_Bastard-Culture.pdf Abstract: The computer and particularly the Internet have been represented as enabling technologies, turning consumers into users and users into producers. The unfolding online cultural production by users has been framed enthusiastically as participatory culture. But while many studies of user activities and the use of the Internet tend to romanticize emerging media practices, my dissertation steps beyond the usual framework and analyzes user participation in the context of accompanying popular and scholarly discourse, as well as the material aspects of design, and their relation to the practices of design and appropriation. I argue that participatory culture is rather a dynamic interaction of users and companies, discourses and technologies. The availability of computers and Internet expand the traditional culture industry into the domain of users, who actively participate in cultural production, either by appropriating products from the commercial domain or by creating their owns. But while user activities constitute a significant loss of control for certain sectors of traditional media industries, especially in the area of distribution, the larger culture industry benefits from user driven innovation through the appropriation of corporate design. Furthermore, the media industry undergoes a shift from creating content to providing platforms for user driven social interactions and user-generated content.
