Graduate Teaching Assistantships 2010 University of Salford - Faculty of Arts, Media and Social Sciences Every year the University of Salford offers a number of Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTAs) for suitably qualified candidates wishing to study for a PhD. Applications are now invited for scholarships based in the School of Media, Music & Performance starting in October 2010. The scholarships are worth £13,290 per annum per year over three years and are open to UK/EU students. Subject areas include: • Music: Composition (Acoustics Scored or Digital); Popular Music; Popular and Critical Musicology; Sonic Art/Sound Environments. • Fine Art: Contemporary Arts Practice, Contemporary Performance/Live Art; Sonic Art/Sound Environments; Creative Technologies/New Media. • Design: Design Studies/Design Management; Museum Management/Heritage Studies. • Drama and Dance: Contemporary Dance; Community Dance; Dance and Screen; Performance Studies; Live Art. • Other Creative Arts: Television Studies; Film Studies; Media/Film Practice; Creative Technologies/New Media and Communication Design, Cultural and Media Studies (including Journalism). • Journalism: Cultural and Media Studies. • Media Studies: Television Studies; Film Studies; Media/Film Practice. • Other Media and Communications: Creative Technologies/New Media. Graduate Teaching Assistantships offer students the opportunity to study for a PhD while undertaking teaching duties in areas usually related to their PhD research. Successful candidates will work under the direction of an academic staff member on a range of teaching activities, up to 180 hours over the academic year (based on an average of six hour per week). Topics or sites might include service$B!>(Blearning; internships; volunteer programs; cooperative education; distance$B!>(Blearning; continuing education; professional schools such as law, medicine, education, and nursing; community development programs including alumni relations and fundraising; and/or sponsored research. Technologies might include social networking, webconferencing, mobile devices, virtual environments such as SecondLife, course management systems, and/or Web 2.0 applications. THE CONTEXT The early boom of web$B!>(Bbased education in the 1990s, both in the United States and abroad (e.g., in Australia and the UK), saw a flurry of publications on the subject of university and industry partnerships, with a focus on ways in which online learning might lead to new models of collaboration and engagement across previously clearly delineated borders. We will posit in this volume that this late 1990$B!G(Bs opportunity to make connections between industry and academia through emerging educational technologies was, on a broad scale, missed by all sides. Ten years later, as we approach the end of the first decade of the 21st century, we see a similar moment of opportunity for collaboration. As organizations of all types struggle to survive in increasingly difficult economic times, stakeholders have a chance to use emerging technologies to support innovative and mutually intellectually, economically, and socially beneficial collaborations among academic institutions of all levels and non$B!>(Bprofit and profit$B!>(Bdriven organizations of all sizes. THE SPECIFICS Because innovative models for collaboration, new visions of relationships between and among organizations, and redrawing or even erasing established boundaries are crucial moves for our project, we invite writers from all disciplines and fields who incorporate community partnerships in their research, teaching, service, and other missions to consider submitting proposals for case studies (3000$B!>(B5000 words) or traditional academic articles (7000$B!>(B10,000 words). Colleagues/ On May 20 2010 I will deliver the featured presentation at a Special Program organized by the Michigan Library Consortium, Lansing, MI _The Ever Changing User: Mobile Devices and Beyond_ This one-day special program on the ever changing user will discuss the utilization of mobile devices in libraries as well as the needs of library patrons. Our featured keynote is Gerry McKiernan from the Iowa State University Library who will present "M is for Mobile - Information Services in the iPhone Age". "Gerry's presentation will be followed by a presentation of Ann Arbor District Library's use of mobile technology from Eli Neiburger. The program will also feature presentations on working with and providing services to library users." TakeHomeAbstract In this presentation, we will review the mobile phenomenon and profile a wide array of initiatives and projects that offer anytime/ anywhere access to a variety of information services and sources. Free Public Domain Tool for Group Polling

Hello all, I've just finished http://AskClass.net, a hopefully useful site for getting group opinions where participants have access to the web. My primary AskClass.net development goal was the creation of a tool that I could use to ask class questions in a lab environment on-the-fly but other uses now come to mind. The site is easy to use. The "create question" area of AskClass.net allows authors to create multiple-choice, single-answer questions that can be discovered by users in the "list questions" area. The entry screens are kept small for portability to hand-held devices. Users can answer questions and see the results of other respondents in real time. To encourage consensus development, users can change their answer so long as they remain on the question page. There is a FAQ and mouseover help where appropriate. Today was the first day that I introduced http://AskClass.net to students and we had fun. I've also made some changes as a result. I'd appreciate your thoughts and suggestions about where this project might go. I'm happy to provide my design thoughts upon request.
