Hi all! I work am a Graduate Assitant in the Service Learning department at the University of Southern Indiana. We are looking at ways to communicate with students better using the Internet. I'm outlining for them all the various ways that, Facebook, Twitter, Second Life, etc. can be useful in communicating with students, faculty and the non-profits we work with. I thought I'd put this out there to the lists to see if anyone is currently doing anything with Service Learning or non-profits. OR if anyone has any suggestions in general. Research on online counseling in social services?

Hi everyone, I am a Ph.D.-student in social work at the university of Turku, Finland, and am preparing my dissertation thesis on social assistance and its current problems in Finland. Concerning the internet, one of my research problems is internet-based counseling in social services since 3 cities in northern Finland (Lapland) have started such a service in co-operation with one of the centres of excellence on social welfare of northern Finland (Poske). The service itself is about that users (clients of social services) log on using encrypted connection to the service using their netbank access codes. A respondent group consisted of social workers and other professionals working at the social office prepare a response to the client who receives an announcement of the response either to his e-mail or cell phone. Then the client can read the response on a special “response account” produced by this online service. The client may present also additional questions through this service and the questioner (client) as well as the respondent (worker of social office) are able to send attachments with their questions/answers. The content of the service is varying a little bit in different cities; for ex. from daycare questions to social assistance or to the services of the handicapped and children and their families. My actual research topic in the whole dissertation is equality/inequality, so, concerning this internet-based counseling the research questions are: - how do the clients experience the internet-based counseling in social assistance compared with other forms of advising (in traditional written paperform or written internet form/phone counseling/personal counseling during time appointment/e-mail advice/possible short messages) - will clients using online counseling in social assistance fall into inequal positions with each other, depending on the professional status of the person answering to their question - is there client selection in online counseling -are there differences between cities in giving online counseling in social assistance and what kind of differences Now, I´m interested in all kind of research done in Europe or elsewhere that I could have use of in my dissertation thesis concerning online counseling in social services and for this reason am asking your opinions, ideas of information about such research. As a research material, I´m using texts (clients´questions and workers´answers). In addition to that, I should somehow collect clients´experiences on the service. Since "the research permission" does not allow for me to get to know the real identities of the clients, I should somehow get an announcement or request to the mainpage of the service for the clients to participate into my research. I would also like to get ideas on this, how to collect users´opinions in the best way. Hi Mary, I think the issue you need to resolve is the issue of 'intervention' not 'intervention on facebook'.. What is your proposal? What is your research question? Having broken probably every one of the British Sociological Associations ethical guidelines at some point or other I would suggest that you explore a "positive/negative" approach. Whereby you argue that the breech of ethics is offset by the value of the research. However, intervention is not research (I crossed the boundary between research and intervention in my Pro-Ana research arguing that I was a human first and an researcher second) so who are you to intervene? Perhaps if we knew what you were looking at in a bit more detail we could help. I love ethical issues! haha. The Doctoral Consortium is a workshop for Ph.D. students from all over the world who are in the early phases of their dissertation work (i.e., the consortium is not intended for those who are finished or nearly finished with their dissertation). The goal of the Doctoral Consortium is to help students with their thesis and research plans by providing feedback and general advice on using the research environment in a constructive and international atmosphere. Students will present and discuss their thesis in the context of a well-known and established international conference outside of their usual university atmosphere. The workshop will take place on a single full day. Up to 15 students will have the opportunity to participate. Limited funding may be available to partially offset travel and registration costs for those students with severe financial need. Several prominent professors and experienced practitioners in the field of digital library research in organizations from different countries and continents will conduct the workshop. They will review all the submissions and comment on the content of the thesis as well as on the presentation. Students will have 20 minutes to present their research, focusing on the main theme of their thesis, what they have achieved so far and how they plan to continue their work. Another 20 minutes is reserved for discussion and feedback from both the professors and other participants. In the course of the workshop students will also get advice on more general questions, e.g. the differences of Ph.D. studies in different countries. Call for Papers and Topics Students interested in participating in the Doctoral Consortium should submit an extended abstract (see details below) describing their Digital Library research. Submissions relating to any aspect of Digital Library research, development, and evaluation are welcomed, including: technical advances, usage and impact studies, policy analyses, social and institutional implications, theoretical contributions, interaction and design advances, and innovative in the sciences, humanities, and education. To apply for participation at the Doctoral Consortium, please provide an extended abstract of your doctoral work and upload it at www.jcdl2009.org. CALL FOR BOOK CHAPTERS ***Please distribute widely - apologies for cross-posting*** Public Service Broadcasting Online This edited collection of work by international scholars analyses how broadcasters have used the world wide web to further their public service goals. How did broadcasters such as the BBC, ABC, ARD, DR, NRK and even the US Public Broadcasting Service translate their public service remits for this global digital platform? What were the differences and similarities between different broadcasters? What can these histories tell us about a future for public service in broadcasting? These questions are highly significant for those who value public service in broadcasting, and who hope that it will continue in a globalised digitalised communications environment. A number of public service broadcasters implemented web services amid dire predictions about the death, not only of public service broadcasting, but of broadcasting itself. Despite these circumstances, the websites were (and are) often extremely successful. In July 2008 BBC Online was the 27th most popular English Language website in the world, the ABC is consistently among the top ten websites in Australia, and DR Online has for a number of years been among the top three in Denmark. Perhaps these histories of success can take public service broadcasting more optimistically into the future. Each chapter of this book will focus on a broadcaster from a different country. Comparative chapters are also welcome. We welcome chapters that focus on: • policy and strategy; • regulation, media organisation; • web content; • users; • cross-media technology; • local and global relations. We are inviting you to submit via email to Maureen Burns (m.burns2(a)uq.edu.au ) or Niels Brugger (nb(a)imv.au.dk) by 17 April 2009: • a 500 word abstract of a proposed chapter; and • a preliminary outline of the proposed chapter. The successful abstracts will form part of a book proposal to be offered to academic publishers.
