facebook research - need some thoughts on facebook and research ethics
by marybeth deline 03 Mar '09

Hi everyone, My name's Mary Beth Deline and I'm currently a graduate candidate at the University of Waterloo - I'm hoping I can get some help from the list re: research ethics and Facebook. I'm currently checking out how feasible my thesis proposal is, which concerns using Facebook as a site for an intervention - either by developing an application or posting information on participant's walls (these participant's would have been recruited beforehand). I've contacted Facebook and they referred me to their Terms of Services and said that was all they could do for me. I'm having trouble finding someone who can help me match that (and their Developer Terms of Service) up to the Canadian Tri-Council ethical guidelines. If anyone has any experience using Facebook as an intervention site, or is able to provide guidance/direction on FB and research ethics (either American or Canadian), could you please get in touch with me, on or off the list? I've reviewed the Tri-Council's Feb 08 recommendation paper on Internet research and have searched the archives on this list as well but haven't been able to find anything specifically about using FB as a research 'site'. Thanks in advance, MB mdeline(a)alumni.sfu.ca

by Stefano De Paoli 02 Mar '09

Hi All, during the past weeks I observed how the list is a powerful resource for knowing about the up to date Internet research. I was wondering. Can someone point me to interesting research papers on the theme of "Computer Viruses", from social-cultural-media points of view. This will be used for a research on "Trust" & ICT that I'm currently conducting. best S. -- Stop the numbers game http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=1297797.1297815 http://portal.acm.org/ft_gateway.cfm?id=1297815&type=pdf&coll=GUIDE&dl=GUID…

Final Push: Master's Thesis Survey
by Kristi Scott 01 Mar '09

01 Mar '09

Hello everyone, I am doing some research for my master's thesis examining the Second Life avatar and real world self. The purpose of this research study is to better understand the personality of the real world self and primary avatar. If you could take a few minutes of your time to take this survey it would be incredibly helpful to my research. Also, please feel free to circulate the link as I'd like to get as many respondents as possible. The survey will be available for one more week, so this is the final push. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=Nyu9US_2b1sE98ZOmEWojwqg_3d_3d Thank you! Kristi Scott 'Kady Whybrow'
