I agree with Stephan. Because of its particular history and the type of writer it attracts, Wikipedia is a very good source for computer-related definitions and I have used it in my writing whenever I've wanted to give a quick definition of a technical term. However, I keep that kind of quoting to a minimum (I think I've used a Wikipedia definition at most once or twice in publications), nor would I trust Wikipedia on anything outside of the geek realm. Digital Natives with a Cause?

Dear All, We, at the Centre for Internet and Society, are currently working on a Scouting project on Digital Natives with a Cause, exploring the potentials and possibilities of social transformation and political participation in the realm of youth and technology. The project is interested in mapping the scholarship, policy and legislation in this area to look at what are the knowledge gaps and which spaces need more research and intervention. In the process of documenting the different ways in which the youth relate to digital technologies, we are also examining what constitutes a Digital Native identity and what are the ways in which the youth is changing the landscape of politics and social engagement. As a part of this study, there is one section that we are grappling with on youth and hatred. The general imagination of a digital native is that of a secular, pro-left, 'enlightened' young person who is in the pursuit of those much heralded Internet Ideals of free speech, justice, inclusion etc. However, we have gotten hints from various studies, that a lot of right-wing, fundamentalist, and violent groups around the world are also using the same tools and technologies to create the 'other' digital native identity which is not focussed upon in regular discourse. I was wondering if anybody in this list could specifically point me towards documented cases, anecdotes or scholarly work done on this particular phenomenon of the youth being mobilised by religious/political/cultural groups towards acts of violence (sometimes dubbed as terrorism), hatred, upholding of fundamentalist ideologies, discrimination et al. Any pointers would be well appreciated. If there is somebody who is working in this area, could you please introduce me to them, because I would like to include their work as a part of this scouting project and hopefully also look at some long term collaborations in the future. Call for Participation: CSCW 2010, Workshops Deadlines * July 3rd, 2009: Workshop Proposals due * Sept 6th 2009: Notification of acceptance * Sept 20th, 2009: Revised 150 word Workshop Abstract for web * Nov 20th, 2009: Suggested deadline for workshop position papers Submissions: workshops(a)cscw2010.org Workshops provide an opportunity to discuss and explore emerging areas of CSCW research with a group of like-minded researchers and practitioners from industry and academia. Workshops may focus on any aspect of CSCW theory or practice, established concerns or new ideas. However, radical new ideas expected to draw a sufficient number of participants are very much encouraged! The goal of a workshop is to share understandings and experiences, to foster research communities, to learn from each other and to envision future directions. For a sample of workshop topics from the last conference, please look at the CSCW 2008 Workshop Program (http://www.cscw2008.org/workshops_program.html) Workshop proposals should consist of an abstract and a detailed proposal. The abstract should be no more than 150 words. The body of the proposal should be no more than 3000 words, and should include a description of the theme(s) of the workshop, the workshop activities and goals, the duration of the workshop (one or two full days), the background of the organizer(s), the maximum number of participants, and the means of recruiting and selecting participants. Workshops are intended as small group discussions. Therefore, they receive minimal technology support which is reflected in the low fee for workshops. Organizers should plan to bring their own equipment (e.g., projector and laptops) and will be responsible for the security of their own equipment. We encourage workshop organizers to create web-based resources for their workshops so that advertising, submission and organization can be handled online. CALL FOR AWARD APPLICATIONS Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award 2009 DEADLINE EXTENDED TO FRIDAY, MAY 15, 2009! Sponsored by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research http://www.cccsir.org/ The Carl Couch Center issues an annual call for student-authored papers to be considered for Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award. The Couch Center welcomes both theoretical and empirical papers that (1) apply symbolic interactionist approaches to Internet studies, (2) demonstrate interactive relationships between social interaction and communication technologies as advocated by Couch, and/or (3) develop symbolic interactionist concepts in new directions. Papers will be evaluated based on the quality of (1) mastery of Symbolic Interactionist approaches and concepts and Couch's theses, (2) originality, (3) organization, (4) presentation, and (5) advancement of knowledge. Evaluation will be administered by a Review Committee of four: Dr. Mark D. religious uses of social media?

Dear AoIR-ists, On behalf of a colleague who is seeking to help a monastic community - I'm trying to develop an inventory of (possible/actual) uses of social media such as SNS's, Twitter, etc. that either (a) fit within - rather than disrupt or distort - the disciplines and practices defining / constituting monastic life and contemplation, and/or (b) might foster one or more of those practices, e.g. _lectio divina_ and other forms of guided/disciplined contemplation of sacred texts, community prayer, etc. I have some interesting examples from my previous (very modest) work in these domains - but all of which emerged prior to the explosion of social media such as SNS's, Twitter, etc. So ... any suggestions for more contemporary examples, resources, contacts, etc. would be greatly appreciated.
