September 30th is the main Academic day, featuring the following three tracks: * Social Media Social media and Web 2.0 technologies are applied in ever diverse practices both in private and public communities. Traditional communication and expression modalities are challenged and totally new practices are constructed in the collaborative, interactive media space; * Ambient and Ubiquitous Media “The medium is the message!” – This conference track focuses on the definition of ambient and ubiquitous media with a cross-disciplinary viewpoint: ambient media between technology, art, and content. The focus of this track is on applications, theory, art-works, mixed reality concepts, the Web 3.0, and user experiences that make ubiquitous and ambient media tick; * Digital Games Digital play and games are currently undergoing many transformations: gaming devices are becoming truly connected, players are finding more possibilities for collaboration, and simultaneously games are being applied into novel uses and mobile use contexts. In addition, special academic sessions (e.g. tutorials, workshops, and multidisciplinary sessions) will be held on Oct 1st & 2nd, parallel to the MindTrek business conference. Academic speakers and authors are warmly welcome to attend the business conference tracks as part of the academic conference fee during these days as well. The MindTrek Association hosts MindTrek as a yearly conference, where the Academic MindTrek conference has been a part of this unique set of events comprising competitions, world famous keynote speakers, plenary sessions, media festivals, and workshops since 1997. It is a meeting place where experts and thinkers present results from their latest work regarding the development of Internet, interactive media, and the information society. MindTrek brings together researchers and practitioners from diverse disciplines that are involved in the development of media in various fields, ranging from sociology and the economy, to technology. The organizing committee invites you to submit original high quality full papers, long or short, addressing the special theme and the topics, for presentation at the conference and inclusion in the proceedings. We are interested in contributions in the topic areas social media, ambient/ubiquitous media, and games such as: - case-studies (successful, and especially unsuccessful ones) - oral presentation of fresh and innovative ideas - artistic installations and running system prototypes - user-experience studies and evaluations - technological novelties, evaluations, and solutions - scientific, business, or media oriented contributions - proposals for own workshops. Paper Proposals All submissions will be peer-reviewed double blinded, therefore please remove any information that could give an indication of the authorship. The scientific part of the conference is organized in cooperation with ACM SIGMM, and ‘ACM SIGCHI. Conference proceedings will be published in the ACM Digital Library. Selected high quality papers will be published in international journals, as book chapters, edited books, or via open access journals. There will also be a reward for the overall best paper from the academic conference. Workshop Proposals Feel free to suggest workshops which are co-organized with MindTrek 2009. [Apologies for Cross-Postings] Announcing the Inspiring the Technological Imagination Blog Series - Digital Media and Learning Hub, UCHRI, Futuresoflearning.org (www.futuresoflearning.org ) We are very pleased to introduce a new blog series that reports on the literature review conducted as part of the project, Inspiring the Technological Imagination: Museums and Libraries in a Digital Age. Funded by the MacArthur Foundation as part of the Digital Media and Learning initiative, this project addresses one of the four key questions that defines the initiative: How might institutions change to take advantage of the learning opportunities provided by new digital media? The work discussed in this literature review seeks to contribute to the development of a field in new media and learning by focusing on the role of museums and libraries as part of distributed learning networks. The research was directed by Anne Balsamo, PI. The blog postings will be authored by her and other members of the research team: Cara Wallis, Maura Klosterman, and Susana Bautista (University of Southern California). Introduction to Webometrics: Quantitative Web Research for the Social Sciences Synthesis Lectures on Information Concepts, Retrieval, and Services Mike Thelwall, University of Wolverhampton Webometrics is concerned with measuring aspects of the web: web sites, web pages, parts of web pages, words in web pages, hyperlinks, web search engine results. The importance of the web itself as a communication medium and for hosting an increasingly wide array of documents, from journal articles to holiday brochures, needs no introduction. Given this huge and easily accessible source of information, there are limitless possibilities for measuring or counting on a huge scale (e.g., the number of web sites, the number of web pages, the number of blogs) or on a smaller scale (e.g., the number of web sites in Ireland, the number of web pages in the CNN web site, the number of blogs mentioning Barack Obama before the 2008 presidential campaign). This book argues that it can be useful for social scientists to measure aspects of the web and explains how this can be achieved on both a small and large scale. The book is intended for social scientists with research topics that are wholly or partly online (e.g., social networks, news, political communication) and social scientists with offline research topics with an online reflection, even if this is not a core component (e.g., diaspora communities, consumer culture, linguistic change). The book is also intended for library and information science students in the belief that the knowledge and techniques described will be useful for them to guide and aid other social scientists in their research. In addition, the techniques and issues are all directly relevant to library and information science research problems. Cambridge Paper: DRM makes pirates out of us all

Technological accommodation of conflicts between freedom of expression and DRM: the first empirical assessment Patricia Akester (PhD) was awarded a Leverhulme Early Career Research Fellowship (in association with matched funding from Emmanuel College, University of Cambridge) to undertake a project looking at the impact of technological measures on the ability of users to take advantage of the statutory exceptions to copyright. When technological measures were under consideration in the mid 1990s two stark scenarios presented themselves: on the one hand, an ideal world where copyright owners could use DRM to make their works available under a host of different conditions in a way that responded to the diversity of consumer demand; on the other, a more bleak environment where all users of copyright material (and much non-copyright material) would be forced to obtain permission and pay to access material that previously would have been available to all. In the face of these two extreme visions, the European legislature developed a compromise position, embodied notoriously in Article 6(4) of the Information Society Directive. The legislature appeared to be hoping that rightholders would voluntarily make material within certain specified exceptions available to users. Patricia Akester examines how these issues are working out in practice. Based on a series of interviews with key organisations and individuals, involved in the use of copyright material and the development and deployment of DRM, she provides a sober assessment of the current state of affairs. http://www.law.cam.ac.uk/faculty-resources/download/technological-accommoda…

The American Psychological Association (APA) will release July 1, 2009 its "sixth edition" of the Publication Manual of the APA. As you know, the current (fifth) edition was revised and updated July 2001. Key to the "sixth edition" of APA style is a Web presence. On July 1, 2009, APA will launch a fully revamped website featuring tutorials, sample papers, frequently asked questions, an APA Style blog, and other resources about APA Style. The sixth edition of APA Style offers new and expanded instruction on publication ethics, statistics, journal article reporting standards, electronic reference formats, and formats for tables and figures.
