My coworkers, friends and I are planning an inaugural Barcamp for State Government and technology. This is the first step in changing how NY state provides constituent services. I hope you can join in on this historic event! Next Friday is CapitolCamp NY (June 5th 2009) at the New York State Capitol. < http://capitolcamp.org > The New York State Senate, NY State CIO's Office and concerned citizens are hosting a Barcamp to share ideas about how technology can make government work better for all the residents of the Empire State. For one day, we will focus on the particular theme of using technology to increase transparency and participation in New York State government. QR Codes In Publications / Use By Libraries

Colleagues/ I am greatly interested in learning of Any/All examples of the use of QR Codes in journals, monographs, e-prints, and/or other publications. As defined by Wikipedia, "A QR Code is a matrix code (or two-dimensional bar code) created by Japanese corporation Denso-Wave in 1994. The "QR" is derived from "Quick Response", as the creator intended the code to allow its contents to be decoded at high speed. QR Codes are common in Japan, where they are currently the most popular type of two dimensional codes. Moreover, most current Japanese mobile phones can read this code with their camera. Although initially used for tracking parts in vehicle manufacturing, QR Codes are now used in a much broader context, including both commercial tracking applications and convenience-oriented applications aimed at mobile phone users (known as mobile tagging). QR Codes storing addresses and URLs may appear in magazines, on signs, buses, business cards or just about any object that users might need information about. Users with a camera phone equipped with the correct reader software can scan the image of the QR Code causing the phone's browser to launch and redirect to the programmed URL. This act of linking from physical world objects is known as a hardlink or physical world hyperlinks. Community Literacy Journal

Hello everyone, My name is Jennifer deWinter. I have just taken the position of book editor for the Community Literacy Journal—an exciting forum in which scholarship engages with literacy practices outside of the defined walls of K-12 and higher education. There are a number of exciting publications in community literacy that we need reviewed, and those publications are not always coming out of university presses. As such, we are looking for reviews of the following: --New books --Seminal books --Websites --Documentaries --Serious games --Repositories of knowledge, such as blog sites, YouTube videos, and databases While this is not an exhaustive list, it provides a place to start. In the same way that literary practices occur in surprising places and times, so too does the literature break away from the typical boundaries of academic publications. Also, if you have a book coming to press that is topical to the journal, please let me know so that we can review it. In addition to the traditional book review, I will be instituting a “Keywords” essay in the book review section. Currently, there is more literature available than we are able to review in a semi-annual publication. As such, we at the journal have decided to include a thematic synthesis essay organized under key themes in the field of community literacy: community literacy (obviously), methodology, service learning, international service, youth programs, and so forth. These essays will serve the purpose of collecting the sources and putting them in conversation with one another in order to appreciate where we have been as a field of study and where we will go. If you are interested in writing one of these essays, please contact me with the keyword that you would like to explore. Both the book reviews and synthesis essays are also excellent publication opportunities for graduate students. I am, of course, excited about joining the journal. Community literacy continues to grow and transform entire groups, and it is the power and transformative potential of these literary practices that make this such an exciting area for scholarship and engagement. Irrecuperable diachrony of pure passingness? Reversible? Relative? Real? Living present? Original transcendence? Structure of consciousness? The various Western philosophical traditions have, since their inception, continuously attempted to grapple with the question of time, but still, the problems remain unsolved, the paradoxes tangled, the contradictions unsettled. Performers and artists understand time as an essential dimension of their media. Many contemporary artists foreground the temporal as a theme in their practice and making. Movements, rhythms, bodies, sounds, objects, experiences, memories, dreams, imaginings and dwellings are recorded, performed and activated in their duration, moment, event and passing. time transcendence performance brings together the expertise and experiences of scholars and artists in a format that permits the thinking and doing of time with an aim towards mutual elucidation. Drawing together papers, panels, diverse performance practices, exhibitions, installations, screenings and workshops, this transdisciplinary conference and inter-media event initiates a global discussion, investigation and critique of temporality in its performative, phenomenological and transcendental dimensions. The tangible consequences of this cross-fertilisation offers promise for researchers, scholars and artists alike. To begin this gathering and discussion, this conference invites presenters across discourses, disciplines and media, questioning and emphasising the taken for granted yet complex and mysterious phenomenon of time. A quick reminder that proposals for the Technical Communication special issue on “Legal Issues in Global Contexts” are due on Monday, 1 June 2009 -- 400 word proposals with a quick turnaround - decisions by June 15, 2009. Call for Proposals: Special Issue on “Legal Issues in Global Contexts” _Technical Communication_, the journal of the Society for Technical Communication (STC), is soliciting article proposals for an upcoming special issue that will examine how factors of law and of culture affect how technical communicators work in international and cross-cultural contexts. This special issue will be published in November 2010, and the guest editors are Kirk St.Amant of East Carolina University and Martine Courant Rife of Lansing Community College. SPECIAL ISSUE DESCRIPTION Legal issues are increasingly affecting the work we do as industry practitioners, academic researchers, university and college educators, and independent entrepreneurs in technical communication. In some cases, these legal issues involve notions of ownership, copyright, and trade secrets. In other instances, legal concerns related to privacy, disclosure, and free speech affect how technical communicators perform different activities. These legal issues are further complicated by different cultural perspectives related to working in global environments and to addressing the informational needs of different cultural groups within our own nations. Very few individuals in technical communication, however, are lawyers or have formal training in issues of law and its intersection with different cultural communication expectations and assumptions. This special issue of _Technical Communication_ will examine the legal issues affecting technical communication practices related to designing materials for or to working with individuals from other nations and cultures. POSSIBLE TOPICS FOR THIS SPECIAL ISSUE The guest editors invite proposals for papers on applied research or theory, case histories/studies, tutorials, and/or annotated bibliographies that address the following issues: • Why should technical communicators attend to global/international legal issues? Why not? • What kind of training should technical communicators have to address issues of law and culture effectively in international and domestic contexts? • How are legal issues or requirements related to language and translation affecting technical communication practices? • How should technical communicators working in international organizations approach legal issues? Should these issues be turned over to the “legal department”? Should technical communicators have input on organization policies with respect to implementing law? Should they be seen as experts in this area? Why or why not? • What developments in international law, treaties, or global-context legal conversations may impact the work of technical communicators (e.g., the EU Data Protection Directive, TRIPS [Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights], conversations on appropriation of traditional knowledge)? What recommendations might be developed to work within or challenge these new developments? • How do legal issues affect communication practices in globally distributed virtual teams? • What kinds of legal issues do international practices such as off shoring raise for technical communicators? How do these issues affect technical communication practices or provide new opportunities for technical communicators to contribute value to their organizations? • How have legal issues in global contexts become more immediate with regard to the continual growth of and use of online media in international contexts? • In what ways can our history of examining issues of intercultural communication contribute to how we approach legal issues in global contexts? • How do cultural differences related to intellectual property and copyright affect technical communication practices – particularly practices involving globally distributed teams? • How do issues of government surveillance and data mining affect the ways in which technical communicators interact in globally distributed workplaces or use online media to present information and exchange ideas across cultures? • How can aligning global legal issues and local legal issues help – or complicate how we work and conduct research as technical communicators? • What kinds of theories or research methods from the field of technical communication might inform our ability to understand legal issues in global contexts? • In what ways can/should technical communicators enter into public discussions about global-legal issues? SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Proposals should be no more than 400 words in length. All proposals should include submitter name, affiliation, and email address as well as a working title for the proposed article. Question regarding language, the Internet, and university students

Hello all, I am in the midst of writing a MA thesis regarding "Netspeak" but I was curious as to what's out there in terms of how university students are involved. For example, I know that Naomi Baron used her students in investigating; but I was wondering if there were anything about how "Netspeak" is regarded as a youth thing (if there is, in fact, anything out there - which I'm not certain about). I'm already using Crystal (Language and the Internet) and Baron (Always On). Any help / advice would be highly appreciated! Thank you, Jasmine Pues

I explored four 'pathways' to internet scholarship - specifically talking about how internet scholars develop and integrate any previous academic study with their current engagement with the internet. To me, briefly, a scholar engages with the topic with supporting theoretical structure and analysis that comes from "far and wide" - and when becoming a scholar, academics undergo a process of educational/personal and professional development (the Germans called it Bildung).
