Linda Stone, now a consultant, ex MSR, has written smart stuff on "continuous partial attention" which most of us do on and off line. (And well before the internet -- ever talk and drive a car simultaneously). The articles I've seen have been smart essays. email groups

Hi all, I'm currently looking at email groups created exclusively by and for members of indigenous groups. These are e-groups hosted by Yahoo. I've tried to search for related studies but the only ones I came across are email lists or list-servs based on professional or organizational interests. Does any one know of studies focusing on email groups formed on the basis of ethnicity? Attention and new media

Hi folks, Does anyone know of work that has been done specifically on questions of attention (and focus/engagement/distraction/perception) and mobile media and/or ambient computing? There have been more popular books (like Maggie Jackson's Distracted and Winifred Gallagher's Rapt), but I'm wondering if there are key pieces of research out there that I should be sure not to miss (in HCI, pervasive computing, psychology, communication, or other fields). Hi Mariana. A similar phenomenon happened in Israel with blogs of young people who died in terror attacks or during army service and some after committing suicide. the blogs got a lot of traffic of people writing to the dead but it wasn't just family and friends, in fact they were the minority - many people who didn't' know them read their former entries and got to know them and spoke to them after their death. Another interesting phenomenon was that in a few cases of dead teenagers their parents took over the blog and shared their memories. The blog became very popular with the parent now blogging. I don't' know anyone who documented this in research but I'm doing a long ethnography in the Israeli blogosphere so i had the opportunity to witness that. I thought it raised an interesting issue of privacy of the dead, since parents didn't know their children's passwords but got cooperation from the blog host owners to reactivate the blog. Did you witness anything similar? But that's mainly fwding existing news of the mainstream news industries. The Iran case showed that Twitter also had the potential to become a news source in its own right. This time it remained modest in scale, and the event itself faded away (it's too early to say it 'failed'). In this case the "Twitter Revolution' was hyped up by US American techno evangelists like Shirkey and Jarvis. Easy to deconstruct but that's not all of it. If Twitter is all about people communicating with each other, then why all this forwarding of major websites URLs that people are already visiting anyway? Geert

Aging Data

Colleagues, Can anyone provide advice in response to this request I received from a colleague at a European institute? "I have started doing some work on Aging. I am currently looking for some Internet diffusion data by age ranges that start before the year 2000. Ideally 1990 would be perfect. Do you have an idea of where I could get that data either EU countries or US. I have already looked at Eurostat and Pew but with little success." Thanks! Based on its search engine ranking and page view statistics, the English Wikipedia is a prominent source of online health information compared to the other online health information providers studied.
