Christian Fuchs Editor of tripleC * * * * * * * * Call For Papers - Special Issue of tripleC (http://www.triple-c.at) Information and Communication Technologies and the Current Crisis: How Are They Connected? The Crisis that began in 2007 continues to convulse the world. Labelled by some as merely a recession, yet it is associated with dramatic changes in national and global power. Others frame the Crisis as merely a consequence of over-promoting a narrow range of financial transactions associated with subprime mortgage instruments. These were indeed overly aggressively oversold by deregulated bankers, but this was likely only an important trigger of the Crisis, not the primary cause. In this special issue, we will explore the notion that much of the basis of the Crisis should be assigned to financial transactions not just made possible but also strongly afforded by use of computer technologies. Thus, those operating at the highest levels of algorithmic capacity bear substantial responsibility for the Crisis. For students of technological innovation and diffusion, many questions emerge about the connection between the Crisis in general and computerization. Some of the questions involve the tight relationship between cultures of technological empowerment and financial elites. Others questions, while appearing initially to be purely economic, turn out on examination to articulate strongly with the public interest, civil society, policymaking, and public discourse more generally. These in turn lead to further, perhaps quite new critical questions about the emerging relationships between capitalism, democracy and the data-information-knowledge-technology nexus. Thus, equally important for responsibility is specification of what is known within computer science about the technological dimensions of the Crisis of this crisis. Ultimately, a rethinking of the very notion of "crisis" itself may be needed. Some specific questions authors may choose to address include: * What kind of crisis is this, how is it different from previous ones, how are these differences related to automated ICTs and the changed practices they have afforded? * What role do computer professionals have in the crisis? * Does this crisis suggest a dystopian post-human future? * What media theories best explain the crisis, or has the time arrived for newly radical approaches in this area? * How does public policy fit in the private world of computerization? * What historical guides are available as tools to foster better analyses of technological crisis? * Will the BRIC nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China) be the "winners" of this crisis? * Are there artistic innovations that help refine political and policy responses to this crisis? * What new knowledge innovations are needed to understand the forces at work in this crisis and its implications for democracy? * What new questions need to be addressed to orientate research about the crisis? * How are the computing-, information-, and media-industries affected by this crisis? How will they develop in the future? This special issue of tripleC is intended to feature research from both theoretical and practical perspectives. We seek contributions from any theoretical, professional, or disciplinary perspective that offers innovative analysis that promotes debate about technology and the Crisis. Her research has taken her from inner urban life in Glasgow through mainstream churches in Auckland to where religion, history and politics collide in Israel. Heidi's teaching and research centres on the social shaping of technology, rhetoric of new media, and themes related to the intersection of media religion and culture, with a special interest in the internet and mobile phones. She has written a book Exploring Religious Community Online: We are one in the network looking at how members of online religious communities connect their online and offline social-religious networks. Engaging Students With Cell Phone Technology In Organic Chemistry Instruction

Advances in educational technology have enabled flash cards to be viewed on computers, offering an endless array of drilling and feedback for students. The current generation of students is less inclined to use computers, but they use their cell phones 24 hours a day. This report outlines these trends and an even more recent educational technology initiative, that of using cell phone flash cards to help students learn organic chemistry nomenclature, structures, and reactions. Student attitudes were positive toward cell phone flash cards in a pilot study and a more detailed study investigating use and effect on student learning is planned. CITE: Pursell, David P. J. Chem. Students rely on course texts for substantial supplementation and reinforcement of course topics presented by the instructor. [snip]. Even with outstanding texts and the engaging multimedia resources that often accompany them, students often feel overwhelmed with the pace and content of introductory organic courses. As noted above, students may then resort to memorizing as a means of survival. The notion of memorization depends on one's perspective, but for the beginning organic student the nomenclature, functional groups, structures, and reactions are often viewed as part of "the infamous, dreaded 'orgo', a marathon of memorization." To assist students with the task of memorization, all of the texts noted above consolidate nomenclature, functional groups, structures, and reactions into callout boxes that focus student attention. In addition, students often make their own flash cards for these topics. [snip] Electronic, Web-based reaction flash cards are a relatively recent development, offering an unlimited variety of reactions, reagents, and products drills, often providing feedback to students (and instructor) to guide further study effort. The disadvantage of the Web-based flash cards is that they require a desktop or laptop computer and students miss the learning opportunity of creating their own flash cards. All, This is intriguing. I teach open source knowledge, social media etc, and am also a big fan of Wikipedia, but often worry about its growing pains. I'm wondering if it's worth setting up a kind of informal partnership with Wikimedia, given our collective expertise and interest to provide advice, recommendations etc. This could take the form of everything from our setting up a task force (meeting online and/or at in person conferences) on our own to provide our recommendations; to actually meeting and working with Wikimedia staff and agreeing on a discrete advisory type role; getting our students involved to study aspects of open knowledge sourcing and Wikipedia and present papers at one of our sessions, or a special session devoted just to this topic...and so on. Lots of brainstorming opportunities here and the chance to put our knowledge, skills, and background to some practical use. Could be good for AIR-L too as a group in terms of greater recognition of who we are. Since the old rule of "you suggest it--go ahead and do it" always applies, I'd be happy to be a prime coordinator of such an activity as long as: 1. There is clear expressed interest in this among AIR members (please email me directly either here or my academic email at berkmanr(a)newschool.edu) among the group; 2. This kind of activity fits in AIR own mission/scope etc; and is "blessed" or given some kind of official "go ahead" 3. This track will focus on the feedback loops between virtual technologies and the social groups who use them, how each shape the other and are in turn shaped by them. Virtual technologies, crucially, have moved very decisively from the workplace whether corporate or home office - and into the domestic sphere, into our living rooms, playrooms, our kitchens, and our bedrooms. Here the relationship between virtual technologies and society, and the mutual shaping processes each undergo, are ripe for fresh study, insight, and exploration. The Virtuality and Society Working Group sub-stream of the Human Choice and Computers stream of the World Computer Congress therefore invites research and work-in-progress papers that address the choices faced by an information society permeated by ubiquitous virtual technologies. The Department of Social Psychology at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Helsinki invites applications for a Professorship in the Social Psychology of Information and Communication Technologies for the period of five years. The duties will include the teaching and development of research methods for mediated interaction. The appointee will also participate in the activities of the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology (HIIT) as a senior researcher. When making the appointment, the primary criteria are the applicant’s qualifications in scientific research and in academic research-based teaching. Colleagues/ A Major Initiative ! / But Not [IMHO] Just For Museums ... /Gerry For many years, art museums have been at the forefront of offering their visitors learning experiences that extend beyond traditional exhibit labels with gallery kiosks and audio guides. More recently, art museums continue leading the way by adding cell phone tours, podcasts, and platform-specific applications in an effort to capitalize on the commonly-owned portable devices-iPods, MP3 players, Blackberries, cell phones-that visitors already carry in their pockets. Museum professionals see great potential in reaching new audiences and pleasing old ones by providing content and social interaction via mobile devices. The biggest challenge is that many museums do not quite know where to begin when working with a small budget and small staff with limited technical knowledge. This site addresses those needs by proving a brief overview of what is being done in the mobile museum world and offers suggestions based on this research on how to economically provide mobile users with a positive experience with your museum.
