Call for Papers - The Eleventh Annual Convention of the Media Ecology Association Media Ecology and the Natural Environment. June 10 – 13, 2010 University of Maine, Orono, Maine. Media Ecology and the Natural Environment The subject of media ecology was formed with two biological metaphors in mind, Neil Postman wrote in “The Humanism of Media Ecology” (2000). In biology, a medium is a substance within which a culture grows. Change “substance” to “technology,” and media ecology defines a medium as a technology within which a culture grows, forming its politics, social organization, and ways of thinking. In biology, ecology is the study of what constitutes a balanced and healthy natural environment. Media ecology refers to ways that cultures maintain a healthy symbolic balance to help keep our natural world in order. Media ecology seeks to make us more aware that we live in two different environments. We live in both the natural environment of air, water, animals, and plants, and the media environment of language, images, symbols, and technologies that shape us. The 11th Annual Convention of the Media Ecology Association invites papers, panels, creative projects, and other proposals exploring the connections between these two ecologies, one of culture and communication, the other of nature and the physical sciences. Convention submissions are welcome that draw on a wide variety of perspectives in environmental studies in the sciences and communicat ion, from issues such as climate change, biodiversity, acid rain, and wildlife ecology. How do media ecology and natural ecology intersect? How do ecologists in humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences create dialogue with each other? Can scholarship bring artists, communication researchers, and scientists together? What is the relationship between primary natural and virtual media realities? What is the history of environmental thought? Electronic submissions of papers and session proposals are preferred and should be sent by January 15, 2010 to Paul Grosswiler, Chair, Department of Communication and Journalism, 420 Dunn Hall, University of Maine, Orono ME 04460, paulg(a)maine.edu. All submissions will be acknowledged. The convention will be sponsored by the Vice President for Research, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the Department of Communication and Journalism at the University of Maine. Campus housing will be available. Tours of Maine’s natural environments will be offered. Mobile Technologies and Library Applications:first post to list

In reply to Gerry McKiernan's query re other applications ? I hope I am correct in assuming you posed the question? As I have been interested in mobile applications and ethnography (for which they must just be - boon) and community cultural development projects. Using online applications such as i.o. drop, bambuser, eBOX, and similar, linking maps, GPS...it's endless, the possibilites for producing data...but also a whole tonne of other goodies community wise. i apologise for not providing links, this is my first time and i am excited! social science research for the hi-tech sector

I was wondering if anyone knows anything about social scientific research for the hi-tech sector? (That's "for", not "on".) Has anyone given thought to the question of how to make a convincing case to hi-tech companies for investing in sociological studies of their fields of operation? PLoS ONE 4(9): e6968. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0006968 Abstract Background Epidemiologists and ecologists often collect data in the field and, on returning to their laboratory, enter their data into a database for further analysis. The recent introduction of mobile phones that utilise the open source Android operating system, and which include (among other features) both GPS and Google Maps, provide new opportunities for developing mobile phone applications, which in conjunction with web applications, allow two-way communication between field workers and their project databases. Data collection frameworks utilising mobile phones with data submission to and from central databases are widely applicable and can give a field worker similar display and analysis tools on their mobile phone that they would have if viewing the data in their laboratory via the web. We demonstrate their utility for epidemiological data collection and display, and briefly discuss their application in ecological and community data collection. Furthermore, such frameworks offer great potential for recruiting 'citizen scientists' to contribute data easily to central databases through their mobile phone. TV in dorms

Kevin's point about dorm TVs may be a tangent, but certainly related to the shifting media ecosystem. I don't think his experience is an anomaly - that's the policy at Middlebury as well, and I think it's true at a lot of residential colleges that cable feeds are limited to common areas or must be purchased as an add-on to a suite. It used to be a real factor limiting the way people consumed media, as in-room TVs were only for gaming or videotapes/DVDs, and common areas were the way that students watched current TV. But today, my students gather only for "appointment viewing" (weekly Office, Grey's Anatomy, 24, or Lost viewing seem to be most common), and watch everything else online via Hulu or BitTorrent (usually alone or with a friend). For me teaching television, it makes it easier to get them to watch a specific program, but harder to consume a channel's flow with ads and a schedule. -Jason > I worked for a year and a half at The University of the South in > Sewanee, Tennessee, a liberal arts college in the southeastern United > States.
