Asian new media resources (inquiry)

Dear fellow AOIR, I'm formulating a syllabus for a summer course on Asian New Media. My particular interest is actually New Media in Southeast Asia, but for this class I'm widening the regional scope into East, South, and Southeast Asian New Media. So far I have collected materials from Routledge's edited collection *Asia.com: Asia encounters the Internet*, David Hill and Krishna Sen's *The internet in Indonesia's New Democracy*, Ravi Sundaram's *Pirate Modernity*, Amit S. Rai's *Untimely Bollywood*, and couple articles published by Berkman Center such as Mridul Chowdhury's article on Burma's Saffron Revolution and Mary Joyce's article on citizen journalism in South Korea. I feel that there so many other possible materials out there. So I thought that maybe people on this listserve could give me some suggestion about other texts that I should consider using. I include the course description of my summer course to give a clearer sense about what kind of class it is. As Cynthia Selfe argues in the June 2009 issue of *College Composition and Communication*, our profession's continuing tendency to focus primarily on print literacy limits our understanding of rhetoric, discourages students from "identify[ing] their own communication needs" and needlessly limits individuals who have developed expressive identities in a digital age ("The Movement of Air, The Breath of Meaning: Aurality and Multimodal Composing" in *CCC*, June 2009, 618). By widening the possibilities for composing in their classrooms, instructors may establish more compelling and inclusive learning environments for students of diverse races and cultures, language backgrounds, ages, and communication interests. Teachers also may create classes that can better serve the needs of students learning differences, e.g., in the areas of vision, hearing, or attention. Along with the potential advantages of incorporating multiple modes of composing into their curricula, instructors may well experience challenges that can obstruct curricular change or dampen enthusiasm of both instructors and students. Integrating new technologies into classes sometimes creates unwanted hurdles. Access to technology and digital literacies can sometimes encumber students. Instructors may experience new technologies as more burdensome than beneficial, especially when faculty are not rewarded for integrating new communication technologies into their curricula. In addition, educational institutions are increasingly demanding that digital texts and multimodal composing options be integrated into their curricula--sometimes before they have acquired the funds or the staff to support these efforts. We already know that we are experiencing a major transformation in communications that is permeating both our daily lives and our institutional realities. Most of us are struggling to develop our own expertise in multimodal composing while simultaneously teaching others to compose in digital environments. We encourage prospective authors to consider both opportunities and challenges associated with teaching/learning multimodal composing. We hope to receive submissions that focus on one (or more than one) of these roles/ perspectives: writer, student, teacher, tutor, program administrator. We also welcome reviews of books & web sites that enhance instructors' knowledge of teaching with new technologies OR that facilitate adult learners' expertise in multimodal composing. Finally, since basic writing instruction is moving into new venues (e.g., as test-preparation courses in for-profit companies or in adult education programs), we welcome submissions that explore uses of multimodal composing in a variety of institutional environments. *Technical Guidelines for Submissions: * * * 1. These publications document the emergence and development of Internet Studies as a field of research and scholarship in its own right, one affiliated with a characteristic topoi of issues, research questions, methodologies, and its own distinctive ethics. To further explore the broad terrains and structures of this emerging field, the Oxford Internet Institute is organizing a series of workshops and lectures over the next two years, intended to encourage and gather critical analyses and perspectives from a number of internationally-recognized scholars and researchers, along with younger colleagues whose research promises new insights and perspectives. The first of these workshops, held at Aarhus University on 19 March 2010, took stock of the field by critically assessing the two major volumes on Internet Studies (Consalvo and Ess 2010, and Hunsinger et al 2010), with a view towards developing further insights for the field, its current and future directions, and its (potential) significance and impact. Accordingly, we invite contributions from across the range of disciplines applied to study of the Internet that address our thematic questions, beginning with: can ³Internet Studies² be discerned and demarcated as a field (or fields) of academic research and scholarship out of the rapidly growing body of research and scholarship intertwined with the Internet and the array of human interactions it facilitates? And: insofar as Internet Studies can be argued to exist as a field(s) what are its defining characteristics, including, e.g., a distinctive set of objects of study, research questions, methodologies, a body of findings and literature recognized as foundational or definitive, ethical guidelines, professional expectations, and whatever else we may argue to be necessary, if not sufficient, conditions for an academic field(s) of study? Contributions may take one of two forms. One, authors may seek to develop comprehensive and authoritative overviews of how an important topos of research on the Internet (e.g., social interactions, emotion, identity play and development, etc., etc.) has been studied, important findings, and areas in need of further research. Two, authors may take a critical perspective on the field as a whole or any sub-field within this area. Generally, the special issue will not focus on the presentation of specific research, even though it might connect well with and reflect upon a broader synthesis or overview of a larger domain of Internet research. Other special issues and articles are well suited for the publication of original research. This issue will be more focused on generating the most stimulating syntheses of the field defining the vitality and overall state of the field. Selected contributions will appear in the special issue of New Media & Society. Submissions are due to the editors by December 31, 2010. Submissions accepted by the editors will be returned to the author(s) for any needed revision by 31 March 2011; final versions will be due back to the editors by 30 June 2011, followed by an external review process resulting in final acceptance / rejection / or acceptance with revisions. Final versions of accepted papers will be due by 1 December 2011.
