by Donna Bulford 23 Mar '10

23 Mar '10

HI All My job is to bring advertisers into the Social Media through online casual games. Facebook has a strict advertising policy. I want everyone's academic opinion on the following terms and conditions..do you think they go beyond good taste and border on puritanical? Facebook T and C's ...excerpt: 1. Ads for dating sites, services, or related content must follow these targeting criteria (does not apply to ads on Facebook Platform): 1. the Relationship Status targeting parameter must be utilized and set to Single; 2. the Sex targeting parameter must be utilized and a single value of Male or Female must be selected; 3. the Age targeting parameter must be utilized and the age range selected must start at least at 18 years old; 4. the Interested In targeting parameter must be utilized and a single value of either Men or Women must be selected. Also prohibitied: 2. Ads cannot contain, facilitate, promote, or reference the following: .... 9. Adult content, including nudity, sexual terms and/or images of people in positions or activities that are excessively suggestive or sexual, or provocative images in violation of community standards; 10. Adult friend finders or dating sites with a sexual emphasis; 11. Adult toys, videos, or other adult products; Please chime in ...I wouldl ike to hear as many opinions as possible on the matter. I am trying to work with alternative dating sites...and many of them allow users to be "in a relationship" or "married" and still participate in the site. Obviously as the T and Cs state above ..Facebook doe snot allow this. Thanks

DVDs for teaching internet/new media studies
by Kruse, Holly 23 Mar '10

23 Mar '10

Does anyone have any suggestions for recent DVDs that could be used in teaching internet studies or new media studies classes? There are a few that I use ("IRL," "Virtual Worlds: Inside Online Games," aka "Avatars Online"... I think that's right) that are getting a bit dated, although are still great. I am coming up with a list of more recent ones for my university's library to order. Thanks in advance! Holly Kruse Faculty of Communication The University of Tulsa 800 S. by Carl Vogel 21 Mar '10

21 Mar '10

[apologies for multiple postings; please circulate as appropriate] 2 Phd Positions involving speech and text analysis are open within TCD. http://www.tcd.ie/Graduate_Studies/InnovationBursaries/ The bursaries include payment of fees, some research costs, and a stipend of 16K per annum. The funding covers four years of study within a structured PhD program. This funding is equivalent to that provided by IRCSET awards. Position 1: Speaking the 1641 Depositions This innovative project under the theme of "Digital Humanities and Sustainable Records" will attract candidates who are interested in independent and advanced research linking speech synthesis and important historical documents. It will involve application of advanced linguistic and statistical methods, using the latest tools and technologies, for the analysis and rendering into speech of large bodies of annotated historical text. The project will last for four years and research costs, a stipend, and coverage of fees, etc., will be offered. Successful applicants will have a background in either history or computing. They will have keen analytical skills and will join a small team of researchers with similar interests in the way people speak and present information.
