[apologies for multiple postings -- please alert relevant colleagues -- DEADLINE EXTENDED to MARCH 29, 2010] CALL FOR PAPERS -- StylisticsMMX European Summer School in Logic, Language and Information 2010 (ESSLLI 2010 Workshop): Computational Stylistics: Beyond concordances and grammar checkers Methods of automatic text classification have been applied widely and extensively, ranging in category granularity and with respect to both solely internal properties of texts and text-external variables. Coarse-grained categories include binary distinctions such as spam vs. non-spam and three-way sentiment analysis of positive, negative or neutral, and at the other extreme, fine grained categories might derive from authorship attribution tasks or translation re-ranking in machine translation. Recent studies have sought to relate internal linguistic features of texts with external variables, such as author gender or scores on personality indices. Approaches driven by statistics amassed over corpora are compatible with (and informed by) precision analyses over selected texts, as practiced widely in the digital humanities and some approaches to discourse representation theory. Neither the "macro" level analysis supplied by corpus linguistics nor the "micro" level analysis of individual texts is in any way new. However, the potential for their interaction, and for assessing supra-lexical linguistic features of texts within stylistic analysis is growing. The aim of this workshop is to highlight current work that advances and applies computational stylistics. Papers sought for presentation will address any of the topics related to the theme of the workshop, including: - relations between demographic and linguistic variables - reliability and validity of complexity and other indices - plot structure analysis - sentiment, theme and semantic relation analysis - dramatis personae analysis - tracking stylistic change - cross-cultural variations in effects Each of ten to fifteen presentations will have a tutorial element situating the problem and hypotheses explored, as well as spelling out the methods of analysis, followed by the main substance of the research findings. Thus, the workshop proposes pedagogical value appropriate to ESSLLI, at the same time as recording recent research advances. FlowTV.org CFP: The Archive Due Date: Friday, May 7, 2010 http://flowtv.org/?page_id=25 "Silences enter the process of historical production at four crucial moments: the moment of fact creation (the making of sources); the moment of fact assembly (the making of archives); the moment of fact retrieval (the making of narratives); and the moment of retrospective significance (the making of history in the final instance)." --Michel-Rolph Trouillot, "Silencing the Past" For this special issue, we are soliciting columns that use media archives as sources and explore archives as objects of study in themselves. In particular, Flow seeks to problematize the rhetoric of "new," "digital," "ephemeral," and "interchangeable" with regard to our multifaceted media landscape and ask: In what very real ways do we form, practice, and extract from the archive? How does the archive function as a connection between the past and the present (and an example of the past's place in the present)? How does media function in the archive and as an archive? How can archival study be used to further public knowledge and historical consciousness? Which voices are filtered out, and which gain admission to the archive? What about the "unarchivable" -- affective, unwriteable, experiential? In a sense, this special issue will itself be an archive: What is the current state of the mass-mediated past? Cheers, Michael~ --------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Workshop Contributions CfP: http://shareitproject.org/26 Collaborative Learning with Interactive Surfaces: An Interdisciplinary Agenda Palmer House Hilton Hotel, Chicago, IL, USA Monday, 28 June 2010 9:00AM – 5:30PM A preconference event of the 9th International Conference of the Learning Sciences ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OVERVIEW This workshop brings together educators, engineers, and researchers from diverse backgrounds who have a mutual interest in collaborative learning with interactive surfaces. Because they allow multiple users to interact concurrently, new interactive surfaces (tabletops, whiteboards, etc.) have an unprecedented potential to support co- located collaborative learning. As commercial hardware becomes available and software tools mature, research on these technologies need no longer be confined to technologists. This workshop will familiarize participants with the current state of interactive surfaces, connect them with current leaders in the field, and prepare them for starting or refining their own research agenda. The workshop will culminate in planning tangible outcomes that may include grant proposals, a special journal issue, or an edited book on the topic. The target participants are educators, engineers, and researchers from the Learning Sciences (LS) and Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) communities interested in building, implementing, and evaluating interactive surfaces for learning and work. FORMAT The research space on collaborative learning with interactive surfaces is vast and still largely unexplored. To cover this space, the workshop will use the Open Space Technology method to flexibly divide the workshop into smaller groups based on attendee interest. Thus, we can support participants from diverse backgrounds (educators, instructional designers, psychologists, ethnographers, computer scientists, etc.) and diverse interests (laboratory studies, classroom integration, museum use, etc.). All are welcome. The goal of the workshop is both to inform and to build connections between attendees. Breakout sessions will be led by current leaders in the field and will encourage audience participation through discussion and hands on demonstrations. Based on the interest of participants, "birds of a feather" discussion groups will meet in parallel. Doron, I would recommend using the Twitter API directly. Here is the page in the Twitter API Wiki that explains how to correctly call on the API for a search : http://apiwiki.twitter.com/Twitter-Search-API-Method:-search. When you make such a call into the API, it will return an XML file that can be imported into MS Excel (Windows only-- sorry, fellow Mac users). I wrote a step-by-step blog post on how to do this using the "user timeline" method when we were in the middle of our Twitter research project last semester: http://reyjunco.tumblr.com/post/219287195/how-to-export-twitter-updates-to-… If you want to download a lot of tweets, make sure you pay particular attention to the *rpp* (returns per page) and the *page* parameters. I have a lot of experience with this as we downloaded and archived almost 3,500 tweets during our 15-week-long study. So, please let me know if you have any questions.
