Dear all The Department of Internet Studies would invite researchers in all topics around internet, new media, gaming, digital media creativity, knowledge networking and the like to consider applying for a Curtin University research fellowship, to be based in the Department. These fellowships are of two sorts, depending on length of time since your PhD (5 years or less; more than 5 years). They are for four years; in return for a small amount of teaching, they can be extended to five years. Researchers need to prepare an extensive application including a clearly defined research project. More information is at http://research.curtin.edu.au/research-funding/fellowships.cfm The Department has an increasingly strong research culture, including the appointment of a Senior research fellow in 2010 (Professor Mark Balnaves). It has more than 20 doctoral students, as well as a vibrant and innovative undergraduate program. First founded as an area of study in 2001, Internet Studies became a Department in 2008. It is part of the School of Media, Culture and Creative Arts and research fellowship applicants with links into screen, journalism, performance, writing, cultural studies and information science will find colleagues from those areas with whom to collaborate. Report: How People Watch ? The Global State of Video Consumption August 4, 2010 http://blog.nielsen.com/nielsenwire/global/report-how-we-watch-the-global-s… Video consumption across multiple platforms is now a global phenomenon. Consumers in all regions are proving their insatiable appetite for video information and entertainment ? thus far adding screens to their media mix, not replacing them. To get a better sense for how the world is watching video, today, Nielsen recently completed a survey of more than 27,000 online consumers in 55 countries, asking simple questions about how they watch video. Internet access still varies considerably by region, so the results of an online survey are not representative of the total global population, but show us how an important subset of the global population (the connected population) is consuming video across multiple platforms. The results from the survey, with corresponding syndicated Nielsen insights where available, were released today in a new report, ?How People Watch ? A Global Nielsen Consumer Report.?

Despite the obstacles arising from the digital divide, the use of new information and communication technologies (NICT) has been expanding in Latin American countries, generating high expectations about the possibility of an increase in the quality of their democracies. Experiences in different countries have shown that expanded forms of political participation have been developed through the use of NICT, promoting new opportunities for interaction between civil society and the political system. These virtual spaces of interaction allow a reduction of informational asymmetry between political system and society, enriching the state actors' information repertoire about interests and demands of citizens, thereby contributing to the improvement of decision-making processes. This panel seeks to create a space for dialogue to researchers who have produced qualitative and quantitative studies related to different e-democracy practices in countries of the "third wave of democratization," emphasizing "best practices" that can produce effective results in the creation of new and better spaces for political deliberation and participation of citizens in the various institutions that are part of democratic political systems of such countries. JITP 2011: The Future of Computational Social Science CALL FOR PAPERS May 16 & 17, 2011 at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA The 3rd annual, two-day Journal of Information Technology & Politics (JITP) thematic conference will be in Seattle, Washington, coordinated by the Department of Political Science and the Center for American Politics and Public Policy (CAPPP) at the University of Washington. APPROACH Computational social science is an emergent field and source of new theoretical and methodological innovation for social science more broadly. Multidisciplinary teams of social and computer scientists are increasingly common in the lab and at workshops where cross-fertilization occurs in the areas of theory, data, methods, and tools. Peer-reviewed interdisciplinary work is becoming more common as the computational tools and techniques of computer science are being used by social scientists. Previously, large-scale computational processing was the purview of expensive, university-centric computing labs. Now, with the democratization of technology, universities and for-profit firms increasingly provide large amounts of inexpensive computing power to researchers and citizens alike. It is the potential of these new computational technologies and related Web-based platforms for research, politics, and governance that led to the creation of the Journal of Information Technology & Politics. Previous special issues on "Text Annotation for Political Science" 5(1), "Politics: Web 2.0" 6(3/4), "YouTube and the 2008 Election Cycle in the United States" 7(2/3), and "The Politics of Open Source" (in production) have focused the attention of researchers on the expansive new landscape of digital democracy as well as the architecture and tools that underpin it. In their 2009 Science article, David Lazer and colleagues highlighted some of the future challenges for scholars working in this area. "Computational social science could become the exclusive domain of private companies and government agencies. Alternatively, there might emerge a privileged set of academic researchers presiding over private data from which they produce papers that cannot be critiqued or replicated. Neither scenario will serve the long-term public interest of accumulating, verifying, and disseminating knowledge." Luckily, the phenomenon of computational social science is distributed so widely and found in such variety that these scenarios are unlikely. The trends towards openness and data and tool sharing are notable breakthroughs in a sphere where proprietary approaches dominate. Data, method, and tool transparency are increasingly watchwords for governments and researchers. With this background in mind, we invite a wide range of paper submissions on the future of computational social science. Submissions may include, but are not limited to: * Applications of information theory to social science research * Methodologies and tools for studying users and information on social media services * Projects featuring novel uses of computer assisted qualitative data analysis software * Large-scale empirical analysis and modeling * Web technologies and data mining * Interdisciplinary methodologies in collaborative research * Pedagogical issues in computational social science * Computer simulations in political science education and training * Concepts from social sciences enhanced by computation, such as social network analysis * Innovation in socio-technical network and infrastructure analysis PAPER SUBMISSIONS Authors are invited to prepare and submit to JITP a research paper, policy viewpoint, workbench note, or teaching innovation manuscript by January 1, 2011. Proposals for full panel presentations will also be accepted. Please contact the conference manager to discuss panels. Papers accepted for publication will be invited to revise and resubmit their articles for publication in a special issue, or double issue, of JITP. Authors should "establish membership" at the JITP website, http://www.jitp.net, to submit a paper. Follow the instructions for regular article submissions, being sure to indicate that the paper is for JITP2011 in the comments section. Papers will be put through an expedited, blind peer review process by the Program Committee, and authors will be notified about a decision by March 1, 2011. I think it is right to question many of the assumptions at work in the article (and in the general discourse around this issue), including the presented below. The preoccupation with _technologically-enabled_ and enhanced plagiarism is certainly something to approach intellectually and it begs elucidation, in my opinion, and also also tends to obfuscate or take the spotlight many other, much more crucial (and less glamorous) issues. These include such as the problematic nature of ever-growing class size coupled with downsizing of teaching assistants, graduate student labor and the like who are often critical in coaching and teaching about proper writing, attribution, and so on. In addition, if we keep constantly reminding this generation of "born digitals," or whatever you wan to call them, about how they all plagiarize, none of them can learn proper attribution and generally have low expectations for them, won't they just start to parrot back those attitudes and beliefs about themselves? (It reminds me of all the handwringing over "slackers" at the dawn of the 90s. Where are all those plaid shirt-wearing, Pearl Jam-listening slackers now? Probably somewhere financial services, or IT, or otherwise somehow paying off a mortgage on a suburban home, or reading this list right now, unless I miss my guess.) The plagiarism hysteria also has the peculiar characteristic of contributing to the changing atmosphere of the classroom, turning into something resembling more a situation of policing and a paradigm of can I get away with it vs. gotcha, and even leads, in the worst case, to the reliance on third-party and for profit utilities that turn the entire writing and evaluation process into a scientifically managed database check. I mean, this is just the tip of the iceberg with these tools. Is plagiarism a problem in the university (and elsewhere)? Undoubtedly. Hi there, Those who've pointed to Norman and Gibson have already answered your question, but I thought I'd throw my hat in the ring anyway. I recently defended my thesis which looks at affordances as part of a larger examination of genre innovation and evolution. https://circle.ubc.ca/bitstream/handle/2429/7719/ubc_2009_spring_maurer_eli… For those who are interested, chapter four (which looks at e-petitions) is the main place where I discuss this: "Petitioning Canada Online: Genre Adaptation and Local Genre Systems." A very useful though short article from Norman that I draw upon (Caroline has this in her list) elaborates on an important distinction he makes between "affordances" and "percieved affordances." He reminds us: Please don’t confuse affordances with perceived affordances. Don’t confuse affordances with conventions. Affordances reflect the possible relationships among actors and objects: they are properties of the world. Conventions, conversely, are arbitrary, artificial, and learned. Once learned, they help us master the intricacies of daily life, whether they be conventions for courtesy, for writing style, or for operating a word processor.
