The faculty at the University of North Texas invites applications for a new, tenure-track faculty line in professional and technical communication with a specialization in digital/social media, beginning fall 2012. The successful candidate will join five existing PTC faculty members in the newly formed, interdisciplinary Department of Linguistics and Technical Communication. This is a new position, and it is one of three internally-funded hires that focus on social and digital media. This faculty member will collaborate with new hires in Communication Studies and Radio, Television, and Film on interdisciplinary initiatives related to enhancing undergraduate education and community and industry engagement. Our department also provides a robust research environment, and the typical teaching load for junior faculty is 2/2. Our department hosts a thriving MA program in Professional Technical Communication, which boasts a 100% job placement for graduates. Additionally, our new BA in Professional and Technical Communication will give faculty the chance to teach a variety of course, including digital literacies, electronic media, commercial publications, grants and proposals, and research methods for practitioners. Our faculty also has strong ties to industries in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, which provides students the opportunity to work on real projects as part of their coursework. Qualifications We're interested in a diverse pool of applicants with expertise in social/digital media and professional/technical communication. All applicants must meet the following criteria: (1) Ph.D. by the time of appointment, (2) documented experience teaching courses in professional/technical writing, and (3) a record of research or publications that focuses on social/digital media issues. UNT's Department of Linguistics and Technical Communication is an interdisciplinary department, and we invite applicants with diverse doctoral degrees, including technical communication, rhetoric, linguistics, journalism, marketing, public relations, information, media, cognitive science, psychology, or sociology. As a tenure-track member of the faculty, candidates will be expected to teach only courses in technical/professional communication, primarily at the undergraduate level. The theme of the session is: Performing Troubling and Troubled Identities Online: Towards Freedom or Formula? The workshop is part of the "Troubled Identities" Conference at Aarhaus, Denmark, January 19-20, 2012. Please note that the Canadian Communication Association conference is part of a larger event, the annual congress of the Canadian Federation for the Humanities & Social Sciences (http://congress2012.ca/) I hope some AoIRers can make it :-) Guillaume (version française plus bas) CCA 2012 Annual Meeting: Call for papers on the theme Technology and Emerging Media Starting this year, various initiatives will be set up to foster exchanges around the theme Technology and Emerging Media within the Canadian Communication Association. Notably, a meeting will be scheduled during the upcoming CCA annual conference to discuss the possible creation of an interest group. There also are plans to publish papers that will be presented at this conference, which will take place in Waterloo, Ontario from May 30 to June 1, 2012. This publication project will take the form of online proceedings edited by the two theme co-chairs. INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS: Articles must have been previously presented at the Canadian Communication Association (CCA) conference under the theme Technology and Emerging Media (see deadline and link below for submission details): Please note that this theme focuses upon the following topics: - Information and communication technologies, notably their design, diffusion, and uses; - Digital media and related social phenomena; - Issues relating to recent technological innovations in the field of communication -e.g., social media/social Web, mobile media, online games, and new diffusion platforms for traditional media. Papers should meet the criteria of a scholarly article, and must therefore include an outline of the problem/issue being addressed, a theoretical or conceptual framework, as well as a description of research method(s) employed. The editors reserve the right to reject a text that doesnt meet these criteria. Papers should be between 25,000 and 35,000 characters in length, including spaces, footnotes and bibliography. They may contain tables and pictures. The text should be organized in sections identified by titles and subtitles. It is a 2-year-programme that will start at the end of August 2012 with its first year of students. The programme's teaching language is English. Students study the economic, political, cultural, social and practical impacts of digital media. This programme focuses on teaching theoretical, empirical, ethical, critical and practical skills for studying digital media in the information society. European Union students do not pay fees for studying in Sweden. Uppsala University is among the 100 best universities in the world (Times Higher Education University Ranking 2011: #87). Every year 45,000 undergraduate and graduate students enroll for classes. Uppsala University offers some 30 international master programmes and 300 single-subject courses taught in English. It is the oldest university in the Nordic countries - founded in 1477. Programme The programme consists of one semester of advanced core courses (30 credits) that focus on theoretical knowledge, empirical skills and ethical reasoning required for understanding and analyzing digital media & society. 30 credits (= 4 courses, one semester study time) is made up of basic social science skills courses that are taught together with the other specialties in the Social Science Master. Another 30 credits are elective courses that the students choose from various courses taught at Uppsala University. Also an internship at a company or a research internship at a university department are options for the elective courses. The master’s thesis (30 credits) is the final stage in the programme. *Network Archaeology* Conference at Miami University, Oxford OH April 20-21, 2012 Call for Papers (submissions due November 29, 2011) This conference will bring together scholars and practitioners to explore the resonances between digital networks and “older” (perhaps still emergent) systems of circulation; from roads to cables, from letter-writing networks to digital ink. Drawing on recent research in media archaeology, we see network archaeology as a method for re-orienting the temporality and spatiality of network studies. Network archaeology might pay attention to the history of distribution technologies, location and control of geographical resources, the emergence of circulatory models, proximity and morphology, network politics and power, and the transmission properties of media. What can we learn about contemporary cultural production and circulation from the examination of network histories? How can we conceptualize the polychronic developments of networks, including their growth, adaptation, and resistances? How might the concept of network archaeology help to re-envision and forge new paths of interdisciplinary research, collaboration, and scholarship? The conference will trace continuities and disjunctures between a variety of networks, including telecommunication networks, distribution systems for both digital and non-digital texts, transportation routes, media storage (libraries, databases, e-archiving), electrical grids, radio and television broadcast networks, the internet, and surveillance networks. We seek to address not only the technological, institutional, and geopolitical histories of networks, but also their cultural and experiential dimensions, extending to encompass the histories of network poetics and practice. The proceeds of the conference will form the basis for a substantial publication on Network Archaeology. This conference is organized by the Miami University Humanities Center and is the final event in a year-long series entitled “Networked Environments: Interrogating the Democratization of Media.” It is a companion to our Fall 2011 symposium, “Networks and Power,” on November 17-18th featuring panels, interventions, and keynote presentations by Wendy Chun (Brown University) and Lisa Parks (UC Santa Barbara), that interrogate the interrelationships between networked environments, both old and new, and varied forms of power. The “Networked Environments” series, involving an interdisciplinary group of ten humanities scholars, seeks to show how the network dynamics so crucial to contemporary political developments have deep and perhaps unexpected roots in the histories of earlier forms of information production and circulation. We welcome presentations of academic research and artistic projects on contemporary and historical network studies.
