Inclusion of short links in academic publications?

Thank you all for your comments! The reason I asked is not because of a word limit but because one of my committee members suggested I'd use short links to ease access for readers of the print dissertation. I do have quite a lot of electronic sources as footnotes in some of the chapters and he mentioned he'd have typed a shortened url but not a long one. An alternative would be to include short urls in the footnotes and add an appendix with corresponding long links. I'm not sure it's worth the hassle though. LIVING BOOKS ABOUT LIFE http://www.livingbooksaboutlife.org The pioneering open access humanities publishing initiative, Open Humanities Press (OHP) (http://openhumanitiespress.org) is pleased to announce the release of 21 open access books in its series Living Books About Life (http://www.livingbooksaboutlife.org) Funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC), and edited by Gary Hall, Joanna Zylinska and Clare Birchall, Living Books About Life is a series of curated, open access books about life -- with life understood both philosophically and biologically -- which provide a bridge between the humanities and the sciences. Produced by a globally-distributed network of writers and editors, the books in the series repackage existing open access science research by clustering it around selected topics whose unifying theme is life: e.g., air, agriculture, bioethics, cosmetic surgery, electronic waste, energy, neurology and pharmacology. Peter Suber, Open Access Project Director, Public Knowledge, said: ‘This book series would not be possible without open access. On the author side, it takes splendid advantage of the freedom to reuse and repurpose open-access research articles. On the other side, it passes on that freedom to readers. In between, the editors made intelligent selections and wrote original introductions, enhancing each article by placing it in the new context of an ambitious, integrated understanding of life, drawing equally from the sciences and humanities’. By creating twenty one ‘living books about life’ in just seven months, the series represents an exciting new model for publishing, in a sustainable, low-cost, low-tech manner, many more such books in the future. These books can be freely shared with other academic and non-academic institutions and individuals. Nicholas Mirzoeff, Professor of Media, Culture and Communication at New York University, commented: ‘This remarkable series transforms the humble Reader into a living form, while breaking down the conceptual barrier between the humanities and the sciences in a time when scholars and activists of all kinds have taken the understanding of life to be central. Brilliant in its simplicity and concept, this series is a leap towards an exciting new future’. One of the most important aspects of the Living Books About Life series is the impact it has had on the attitudes of the researchers taking part, changing their views on open access and raising awareness of issues around publishers’ licensing and copyright agreements. Many have become open access advocates themselves, keen to disseminate this model among their own scholarly and student communities. As Professor Erica Fudge of the University of Strathclyde and co-editor of the living book on Veterinary Science, put it, ‘I am now evangelical about making work publicly available, and am really encouraging colleagues to put things out there’. These ‘books about life’ are themselves ‘living’, in the sense they are open to ongoing collaborative processes of writing, editing, updating, remixing and commenting by readers. As well as repackaging open access science research -- together with interactive maps and audio-visual material -- into a series of books, Living Books About Life is thus involved in rethinking ‘the book’ itself as a living, collaborative endeavour in the age of open science, open education, open data, and e-book readers such as Kindle and the iPad. Tara McPherson, editor of VECTORS, Journal of Culture and Technology in a Dynamic Vernacular, said: ‘It is no hyperbole to say that this series will help us reimagine everything we think we know about academic publishing. Learning, Media and Technology Call for papers - special issue Media and migration: learning in a globalized world Learning, Media and Technology is acknowledged as one of the learning academic journals in the fields of educational technology and educational media. Proposals are invited for papers for a special issue of the journal on the theme of "Media and migration: learning in a globalized world". The special issue will be edited by Mariëtte de Haan (Utrecht University) and Kevin Leander (Vanderbilt University). This special issue will bring together studies located at the intersection of migration, media and learning. The change in the mobilities of people, media, material goods that allow new connections between 'global' and 'local' life marks contemporary migration as well as social life more generally. >From the perspective of how young people's lives are formed and develop, these developments provide differently distributed resources from which youth can draw, and different processes through which identities, social networks, and knowledge may be constructed. Edited by Jonathan Sterne, this special section features 21 authors who raise difficult questions about academic labor in our field. We may have learned to speak of our work as a calling, but it is also a job. Our jobs are changing, and there are fewer of them. What is to be done? English, history and anthropology have rich discussions of the politics of academic labor; it’s time for people in communication studies to join them in reflections on the future of universities and colleges and our place in them. These articles are meant to spur further conversation in organizing our departments, universities, and associations, as well as in coalition with others who hope to defend and advance higher education. Authors consider a host of issues big and small, from defunding of universities to the real dilemmas facing administrators: from the changing politics of careers to the ways that gender and class play out for faculty and students; from the types of work that get published and promoted to the tyranny of PowerPoint; from the politics of fundraising, to the devolution of administration, to the role of unions in universities. The authors provide plenty of proposals and programs for change, from small but meaningful gestures to activist programs for pedagogy and research, to massive proposals for organizing ourselves and transforming the ways our departments and fields do business. Being interdisciplinary in its nature, Mobilities focuses on the systematic movement of people, goods and information that “travel” around the world in rates much higher (or much slower) than before. As such, mobility studies challenge traditional scholarship that often ignores the social dimensions of mobility, overlooking how travel, movement, and communication and transportation networks help to constitute modern societies and communities. Mobility has always been critical for the creation of social networks and to the development of connections to places. In addition, Mobilities contributes to study of the technological, social and cultural developments in transportation, border control, mobile communication, “intelligent” infrastructure, surveillance. While mobility is an important framework to understand contemporary society, the pervasiveness of location-aware technology has made it possible to locate ourselves and be networked within patterns of mobility. As user generated maps and location-aware mobile devices become commonplace, we experience a shift in the way we connect to the internet and move through space. Networked interactions permeate our world. We no longer enter the internet--we carry it with us. We experience it while moving through physical spaces. Mobile phones, GPS receivers, and RFID tags are only a few examples of location-aware mobile technologies that mediate our interaction with networked spaces and influence how we move in these spaces. Increasingly, our physical location determines the types of information with which we interact, the way we move through physical spaces, and the people and things we find around us. These new kinds of networked interactions manifest in everyday social practices that are supported by the use of mobile and location-aware technologies, such as participation in location-based mobile games and social networks, use of location-based services, development of mobile annotation projects, and social mapping, just to name a few. The engagement with these practices has important implications for identity construction, our sense of privacy, our notions of place and space, civic and political participation, policy making, as well as cultural production and consumption in everyday life. We invite papers that address themes at the intersection of mobility and location, or related topics, such as: · Mobile communication and location awareness in everyday life practices; · New urban spatialities developed with mobile gaming and locative social media; · Privacy and surveillance issues as they relate to mobile and location-based social networks; · Identity and spatial construction through locative media art / embodied performance; · Civic engagement and political participation through mobile social media, new mapping practices and location-aware technologies; · Borders, surveillance, and securitization with ubiquitous and mobile technologies; · Aeromobilities, air travel, and aerial vision; · Alternative mobilities and slow movements; · Planning, policy and design for future mobilities and location-based services; · Tourism, imaginary travel, and virtual travel; · Transitions toward sustainable mobilities; · New methodologies for mobilities research. The interdisciplinary conference "Science and the Internet", to be held August 1-3, 2012 in Düsseldorf, brings together researchers and practitioners from multiple disciplines (e.g. information science, computer science, sociology, communication and media studies, linguistics, educations studies, legal studies, etc.) working on the following or related issues: How is the research process transformed through the use of digital infrastructures? How can the challenges of the public availability of (large scale) scientific data be met? How do scholars make use of social networking platforms, (micro-)blogs, wikis, or websites? How does the Internet affect scholarly publishing (e.g. Open Access, unpublished manuscripts, blogs)? How has the Internet changed the practice and relevance of citations and of receiving reputation? How do teaching styles or beliefs and use of the Internet mutually influence each other? Do Web 2.0 platforms offer opportunities to advance public understanding of science? What is the role of ethics, policies, and legal regulation in academic use of the Internet? What theoretical and practical implications do the aforementioned considerations have for science and the Internet? -------------------------------- SUBMISSION GUIDELINES -------------------------------- The conference language is English. We invite two types of submissions: Abstracts for talks (20 minutes for presentation + 10 minutes for discussion) should not exceed 500 words, excluding data and references. In case of acceptance a full paper (max. 3.000 words or 12 pages) in either English or German must be submitted by July 15, 2012. The full paper will be published in conference proceedings (print and online). Proposals for interactive workshops (90 minutes) should outline both the thematic focus and the session design. Workshops should engage participants in developing the topics. Proposals should not exceed 1.000 words. Wikileaks Panel Discussions

Good evening AoIR! Pardon the intrusion, but I am looking for articles or video of a few Wikileaks panel discussions that were held here in the US last year. The panel discussions included various industry figures, professors, journalists, and legal scholars regarding the role of government, journalism, and the Internet in reference to the Wikileaks issue. I do recall, and have found the US Senate panel discussions, but not ones from industry influencers. Ironically, I recall participating in the twittersphere during these panels, but have seem to lost or misplaced just about all reference to them. Would anyone happen to have links to articles or videos of these panels? Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in technology studies, conducting research, supervising dissertations, and performing departmental, university, and public service. We particularly encourage applicants who can also teach undergraduate classes in media production or in new media production. Salary is competitive. QUALIFICATIONS Ph.D. (completed or near completion by July 2012) in Communication Studies or related discipline, with a specialization in technology studies. Scholars who work at the intersection of media and technologies studies and production, and whose work engages creatively with digital projects, are encouraged to apply. We are particularly interested in a scholar with a cultural approach to technology who focuses on the following, alphabetically-listed, fields or related specialties: algorithmic culture, biomedia, critical code studies, critical digital humanities, game studies, internet studies, social and locative media, software studies, technology and the environment, and technology and social movements. Candidates should have a record of, or potential for, outstanding teaching, research, and service. GENERAL INFORMATION The Department of Communication Studies has 27 full-time faculty with areas of emphasis in Interpersonal and Organizational Communication, Rhetorical Studies, Performance Studies, Media and Technology Studies, and Communication and Cultural Studies.
